Subject: Poser UI mods?

Blackhearted ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2008 at 3:12 PM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 7:53 PM

do any Poser UI mods exist?
it just hit me that we've been using the same interface for over a decade now and how sick of it i am.

what is wrong with a simple, professional, customizable grey interface :(

Or heck, you could just use  prpc from windows explorer (or your favorite file browser as long as it has a "send to" menu)

I agree with you though, if Poser's going to have all kinds of floaty windows, couldn't they do it more like Photoshop, where you could roll  them up?  :)

.

Diaxus2 ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2008 at 3:45 PM

i use P3dO cos it an easy one use prog. there is another out there i used to use, but as it was updated every few month and wouldnt work if you didnt DL the new version.

but yeah the prcp is what you need if you want a UI fpr poser. but its not perfect

I'm not a code monkey so i dont know for sure, but in theory, with the ui being in psd and xml, you should be able to modify it....I've seen small changes. but i've never seen overhauled completely.

My favorite mod is to remove the graphic for the dial and move the dial drag and drop area over the numbers and reduce the space needed.

thanks,

im not so much interested in changing the poser UI behavior, just the look of it. its been completely unchanged 10 years now....

i was aware of some of the xml changes you can make, however its a tedious process and ive had limited success.
i was wondering if anyone had any 'premade' mods :)

i guess were stuck with the meta interface forever since none of the yearly poser owners seem to want to change it :(

Man, I was just thinking this yesterday !

I'd love to strip out all the Kia Krause garbage (I liked Kia - of course!) and get down to a simple, barebones, FAST and usable interface.

There are SO many things that bug me about the Poser interface. I use a lot of programs, and Poser is by far the slowest to actually use. It's like wading thought a swamp of molasses!

The biggest culprit is the directory structure... over to this folder, wait, over to that folder, wait, oh! back to the other folder, wait...... etc., etc., & etc.

Where can you get that?

I'd love to see something that would highlight any non-zeroed or recently changed settings on the "parameter torture wheel device"

ghonma ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2008 at 4:37 PM

IMO a mod can only do so much to fix some of the fundamental problems in the UI.

Take posing for instance, why after so many years are we still being forced to hunt and rotate a bunch of clumsy dials to get anything done ? At the very least we should have those rotate/move/scale gizmos every other app on the planet does. Even better would be some of the cooler facial control stuff from games like oblivion, where you just drag your mouse on various parts of the face and it automatically selects the correct morphs to use.

Add to this better ways to select things, change their properties, better integration of the various 'rooms', more ways to organize and sort your scene and renders (groups, passes, layers all come to mind) etc and we would maybe get a poser that belongs in this century.

Attached Link: PX - Poser eXplorer

There was a GUI replacement .py in freestuff that was pretty nice but not completely complete. I use PX by Dimension3D in place of the libraries but I would love to replace the other interface elements too. Poser 2 had a pretty good interface IMHO.

Have you tried the direct manipulation tool?

Have you tried the morphing tool, which is the button right next to the direct manipulation tool?

id mainly just like a sleeker, more professional interface. bubbly, bitmap-based interfaces are so 80s.

the poser interface should be sleek, modular and customizable. instead we are still using the same clunky rotate balls and tools we have since poser 3. the only thing that changes from version to version (and even inbetween) is the name of the current distributor.

look at poser 3 - released a DECADE ago:
http://www.wap.org/journal/poser3/poser3.html

it still looks the same!

"My favorite mod is to remove the graphic for the dial and move the dial drag and drop area over the numbers and reduce the space needed."

Let me second that request.. where is that mod from, and how do I accomplish it? Anything that saves that much screen real estate is a good thing!

Yeah, I was hoping P7 would have a different interface, but No cigar.   It's another reason I find myself reching for D|S more and more often :-  It has all kinds of UI customizing, and even comes with several skins... You can make Hexagon, D|S and cararra have similar looking interface. Familiarity helps my production.

Using Poser on several computers, anything more then a 5-10 click skin change would be too much work for me. About 15 years ago I was into making code mods and bilding my own computer etc... it was fun to learn. Now, I just want convenience and effectiveness.
(LOL, I sound like I'm 55... I'm really only 38... if that could be considered 'only')

IIRC, the 'same familiar interface' was one of the 'features' they tried to sell people on, when P7 came out.

Same here.. I just want to buy a system, install software and have it work, without dicking around with it. I don;t have the time or energy to be rooting around thw web for hours trying to figure out how something is supposed to work, and resolving the issue. IT work for our home systems (dispite what my wife seems to think) is NOT my full time job.. LOL!

Ok, tracked removving the dials to this thread:

http://poserpros.daz3d.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20488

it referenced a renderosity thread that no longer works... 8(

I DO recall another thread allowing us to change the font to something easier to read as well.

Where can you get that?

i got it  from poser pros forums but i'll repost the instructions here because there is no telling what will happen to the pros forum when pros goes away,

OK, reposting here - as the newer Forum software will make it easier. This will look slightly different to how it did over in R'osity, but it should work the same.

To effect this change first make a backup/safety copy of the following 2 files in Poser 5Runtimeui: parmDialPrefs.xml & 24000_parmDialPrefs.psd.

Now in parmDialPrefs.xml find the line that looks like this one, and replace it:

Find the set of lines that look like these and replace them en mass:

Now, open up 24000_parmDialPrefs.psd and locate the 3 layers starting with 24004, 24005 & 24006 and clear them completely. (Do not delete them, just make them transparent.)

Save the files and start up Poser 5. You should see a tight parameter dial like the Gif above. Wait... Hold everything... where's the dials??? No problem, just use the name as the dial
Enjoy!

As always, YMMV...

Most of the things are stored in C:Program FilesCurious LabsPoser 6Runtimeui  in a series of XML and PSD files.

Quote - Have you tried the morphing tool, which is the button right next to the direct manipulation tool?

The morph brush still requires you to hunt through a long list to find the exact morph you need.

And the direct manip tool is fine, but it only works with one joint/prop at a time. Or at least i cant figure out a way to use it with multiple joints/props. So if i want to scale a whole arm at once, i have to do it one joint at a time, including individual finger joints. Or if i have a bunch of props i want to move to a table for example, i cant just select them all and move them at once. If i need to rotate them together its even harder cause they all rotate around their local pivots. I cant just select them all and rotate them around a common pivot. There also need to be an option to stop it scaling with object size and a way to increase its line thickness so that its easier to use on high rez monitors.

So technically you're right and we do have a 'gizmo.' But it needs a lot of work IMO.

Anyone know off hand how to change the color of the font on the parameter menu?

I know it is just a matter of changing a textColor="##########"

the problem is figuring out what the color is.

i have seen the forumla for getting the right color, but i dont remember what it is....it went something like take the red value and multiply it by a number, the blue value multiplied by a number and the green value and multiply it and add those numbers together....
