Subject: How long to make a pic is average?

Im wondering just how long other artists take to actualy set up a pic, render, post work and publish on average?

and do any of you find it frustrating when you cant get down on computer, or even paper just what you want your idea to look like.

Good point. 

For myself - anything up to a couple of weeks because I generally don't postwork my personal stuff.

For a client - as quick as possible.  The end result isn't generally a Poser image anyhow but it may contain elements of Poser in there.  Whatever it takes to get the job done.

Depends on the piece. My last one took about 2 weeks which is about average for me. I've just been told it's Pic Of The Day at E-on so I must have done something right with it!
Generally it could work like this. 
Two or three days in Poser setting the scene up. After the imports I can spend a week in Vue just working on the lights, materials, camera, composition, test renders etc. The render could then take anything from 5 to 50 hours so I usually let it run through the nights. The postwork could then be anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days.

anywhere from 15 minutes to several days . If it takes longer than days then I either lose interest or the customer has changed his mind .

general realy, dosent realy mater if your a hobbist or a pro, infact it would be nice to know from both realy.

im wondering cos ive had a few projects where i just cant get it right and they end up as WIPs.
Generaly after about 7 - 14 days if i cant get it atleast 50% nailed from what i want, then it goes to the wip bin, and thats normaly before final lighting, last render or post work

im a hobbiest artist so i dont get the amount of time i would like to do more CG art that i used to be able to do

For me, about an hour of work, plus a half hour per figure past the first one, and maybe a half-hour of post-work. Multiply by up to two or three if things are tricky (dynamic cloth, lots of parented props etc.) This doesn't count the time taken with test-renders, which can be considerable.

For commercial work about a week on average, though i have done some 'crunch' work in as less as 10-12 hours too. Depends a lot on how complex the work is and how much custom stuff i have to build as opposed to using bought/free content.

For personal it takes as long as it takes LOL. Right now i'm using my spare time to work on a project for an online contest that will take me about 45 days to finish. I also have a HDD full of stuff i'v started then lost interest in, so those can be put in the 'never finish' category heh.

That would depend on the type of scene. I don't do still images anymore. I do animations so it takes longer to setup and render out. I make my own backgrounds using props and use the Poser figures and not the Daz ones because they are nice and light weight for animations.

For a simple still image for me, it takes roughly an hour or so to setup. Never any longer than that. I don't bog down my scenes or renderout very large images these days.

For rendering speed, under 20 minutes.
Never very long in Poser.

Then again, I do it for fun.  I use low res figures so it renders out even faster for the animation.
I learned a long time ago, less is more in Poser.

surprisingly, longer and longer...;) When I first started out, I was miffed because I could only post 3 pics a day...;) (that was some years ago). As I learn more about Poser, do the modeling, lights, props (looking for things in Poser gets longer in direct correlation to how much stuff I have loaded; thank heavens for P3do explorer...;)

The renders are taking longer (Poser 5, but still...;) as things get more complicated. I'm reduced to doin' them on weekends, as it takes 2-4 hours to model something, UVMap (sorta), 'clean up' for Poser, and then actually start Poser. The individual renders are taking 5-10 minutes (which for Bryce ain't bad, but this is Poser...;) So altogether, about 6-8 hours...

I'm a hobbyist.It takes me from two to three full weekends to produce a picture. More sometimes. Some of the time is because I don't know what I'm doing. The rest is because I don't really like what I'm doing. :-) I get 90% to my goal in a few hours. The last 10% takes forever.

50 (!) hours? Thats a lot! I think 5 hours is a ot too? Can you post an example of art that takes thet much renderingtme. Just qurious for a newbe.

I do Poser as a hobby.  I don't post very often in the gallery, but when I do,  some of my images have taken me 2 or 3 weeks from concept to upload.

It used to take me days to get an image to where I was satisfied with it. Now its usually a day or less, mainly due to having a tried and tested workflow and my runtimes organised so that I know exactly where to look for whatever I want to use.


Expert in computer code including, but not limited to, BTW; IIRC; IMHO; LMAO; BRB; OIC; ROFL; TTYL. Black belt in Google-fu.

Drawing takes about 55 minutes to max 5 hours
(but when I  draw it feels like only 1 hour has passed even though I am busy for 5 hours.. Time flies !!!)

Rendering with Poser 7 about the same, with a max of 12 hours once I think

Poser 6 had render times of over 2 days sometimes.

It is the Volumetric light that makes it last for ever :)

on the second question, what I have in mind I can make with Poser.
so no frustration.. sometimes amazement as it even get's better than I hoped for

squash - It's only the occasional piece which would take this long. 'Gylden Tempest' actually took about 60 hours to render. I realise now I didn't need a couple of settings so high so I could have reduced this time. Anyhow, the render took so long because it's rendered in Vue 6 Infinite with Global Radiosity, volumetric lights, soft shadows & high anti-aliasing. To compute all this does take time. I didn't want to postwork this piece because I wanted to see what I could do with just the program, hence the longer render time. In the end just a couple of touches were needed in postwork.
Just to add, I did alot of work on the materials, many hours of light testing etc, which is why it took about 2 weeks to complete.
Still plenty of flaws but I'm not going back to redo it!

time is something people have invented.. on an average life time of about 80 years.. what is a week of rendering.. It is not about the time, it is about the result

OK - I see. This is beautifull art and I can imagine the rendertime it took. Thank you for sharing your art. Do you have a fast computer? Mine is a MacBookPro and I can not leave it for more than one night because I use it every day at work.

Actually, you could probably have got away with using GI rather than GR - that would have reduced the time a bit and I don't think you'd notice much difference.  It's a bloody good render though

squash - I don't have a particulary fast computer. I have a Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz with only 1GB RAM. I have a good PSU & my case is well ventilated so I can keep it running for a fair amount of time.

Regarding render time. This is not an issue with me. If I can produce something of better quality, even if only slighty, then I am prepared to wait longer. I can spend a week or more actually putting something together, It would then seem pointless to finish it off with a 20 minute render.
