I've been asked to expand on something I said in another thread about saving partial body poses.  Here is a picture tutorial.

Step 1:  Load your figure

Step 2: Inject your character morphs

Step 3:  Pose your figure. Tweak the pose as necessary

Step 4.  Open your Pose Library to a folder where you want to save the Partial Pose to.

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

Click the plus sign at the bottom of the pose library

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

A new window opens up

Type in a name and pick "Select Subset"

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

Another window pops up. Here you pick the parts of the body you want to include in your partial pose

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

The best thing to do when saving a partial pose is to uncheck everything and then go about selecting the few parts that you want. To uncheck everything, click "Universe"

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.

Select the parts of the body you want in your partial pose.  I want to save the leg pose, so I have picked "Hip" and all body parts below.

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

You have already given a name to the pose, so just click "OK"

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

A new window opens asking you if you want to save the morph channels.

No! You don't. If you save the morph channels when you go to apply the pose, not only will it change the pose of the figure, but it will also change the morphs to the ones that you saved with the pose.

able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.

Another window opens asking you about frames.

Save it as a single frame.

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

Finally, you're done.  The next step is your pose being saved to your Pose Library.

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to say." - Ghandi

Acadia ( ) posted Fri, 28 March 2008 at 7:57 PM

I've shown how to save leg poses. But the process is the same for the upper body or just hand poses.  Just make sure you are selecting only the body parts that are affected by the pose.

For arms, you would select the collar, shoulder, forearm, the hands and fingers.

For hand poses you would select  just the hands and fingers.

"It is good to see ourselves as others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we are, especially the evil side of us.

Good tut.  It may just be my personal preference but I really get annoyed when eye rotations/translations are saved into a pose for redistribution as well.  IMO the eyes should be excluded when selecting what to save.

This is incredible.  Is it available as a .pdf yet?  I would love it in that format so I have it available when I work.

Thanks for all your hard work and sharing!

Good tutorial!

Quote - It may just be my personal preference but I really get annoyed when eye rotations/translations are saved into a pose for redistribution as well.

I agree very strongly with pjz99, that eye translations should not be included in a pose file. The eyes in a charecter may have been moved to fit a custom head morph, so you don't want a pose to reset them.

I guess a case can be made for including eye rotations in some circumstances. For example, a pose to convey a coy look may have the head slightly bent forwards, and having the eyes looking up may contribute to the overall effect. But Poser only lets you select a subset of actors, not individual channels - so unless you are going to text edit the pz2 - best just exclude the eyes from the pose.

By the way, if you want to exclude the eyes (or any other actor) when applying a pose, you can lock them, a pose has no effect on translations or rotations of locked actors, the actors can be unlocked after the pose has been applied.

Sorry. I don't know how to make .pdf files. However I don't mind if someone who does know, turns this into a .pdf tutorial.

It's easier than you think it might be, if you have a tool that can save mixed text/graphics as PDF format.  There's literally dozens of shareware apps that do this.

Many of those are 'convert" type programs that require you to have another program to make the file and then convert. it to a .pdf  I don't know Excel or Word. I have "Word Perfect" and all I know how to do in that is type up a letter. Beyond that I don't know how to do anything else in the program.

What a coincidence!

I just bought a pose set and thought "I'd like this upper body with this lower body from a different pose in the set!"

I didn't use your tutorial, but wow, what you wrote it what I did!
That's too cool!

Thanks Acadia for this tutorial, but does anyone know how to save a hand pose to the Hand Library?  I can save a hand pose to the regular pose library, but this method doesn't work for the Hand Library.

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

I've never tried, but why not  copy the saved hand pose from the pose folder into the hand folder, and then change the extension and see if it works?

I know sometimes people have saved MAT pose files in the camera folder and assigned them a camera extension. In order to use those in the pose folder, you just move them to the pose folder and change the extension.

That works, but when I apply the pose to the opposite hand that I originally saved to it gives me the "Some information in this library entry does not pertain to figures of this type." message.  It does apply the pose though.  So thank you again Acadia.
