Subject: Sphere eco-system help

thefixer ( ) posted Sat, 03 May 2008 at 3:49 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 5:49 PM

I'm missing something simple here I know, I want to have a sphere with a fish eco system, easy done right?? Yes and no!

I have my eco system sphere with water material and fish added as an eco system, but they're all at the top of the sphere, nothing at the bottom, I've tried various changes in the editor but can't get the bloody fishes to move from the top and be more uniformly distributed, anyone care to tell me how to do this???
TIA!!!

There is a fish schools ecosystem that comes with Vue 6 Infinite, you could load that and examine the settings to see how they have done it :)

Tried that already, didn't see anything different there except in the function editor which looked like a minefiled for that particular eco!! [LOL].
Maybe the answer is in there, but my skills with the function editor aren't what they should be!!!

I can certainly agree with you on the function editor, I have tried it a few times, got lost and came back out again lol. But I am guessing the only way to do it is there, you could try scatter and replicate but again its not an eco-system just a work around.

Good luck :)

or you could populate, duplicate that and turn it 180 degrees:D

Try this tutorial at geekatplay:

http://www.geekatplay.com/tutorials/3dechosystem/

She's making pillars of rocks but shows you how to get ecosystems distributed throughout your object - it might work for you

If this is what you're after - set the offset below surface (arrowed)

  • When I tried that they all fell out of the sphere onto the floor [LOL].
I'll try it again though just in case!!

The sphere is going to be realatively small and in full view with a water material and hopefully the fishes all through it!!

Mine was a fairly large sphere - so if you set the distance below same as mine they would!! ;-)

Try just a few inches/cm to start with and adjust from there

OK it kinda works but they pop out the side too which is kinda bad [LOL], I guess I could postwork them out though!!
Thanx!

What about using a cube instead of a sphere - they may pop out because of the rounded surface ??

Nope, for the image I have in mind it must be a sphere!! [LOL]
Awkward ain't I??

Just thinking out loud, here, but couldn't you make the ecosystem's underlying material set to transparent, then plunk that sphere into a larger sphere of water?
