Subject: Poser 7 & Pro OpenGL preview problems

Hey gang...I've noticed this weird problem with P7 and Pro's Open GL preview that is quiet annoying. Whenever I have some objects like the one in the sample picture with a transparency map applied to them (the bikini in example is just a transparency on a 2nd skin object), it will often hide the whole material zone or give an incorrect preview. Poser 6 OpenGL preview is always correct, as is the software preview display in P7 and PP, and the scene will render properly in all three versions. I've noticed this effect on several different computers with different OSs (XP and Vista, 32 and 64 bit) with P7 and Pro, with the only thing in common being that they all have Nvidia video cards.

Does anyone know why it does this or how to fix it? Has anyone else had this problem? Does this happen on ATI cards?

Any input would be appreciated.

No problems here with Nvidia 8600. Not even with complicated transparencies.

I think it depends on your computer and your memory, virtual memory and graphics card.

there should be an option under the HELP menu to see the opengl thats in use. If it refers to a microsoft driver then you have a minimal opengl and using the sreed (?) preview may be better.
Its dependant on your video card drivers .  I recently got a nvidia 6200 card that works great Opengl 2.0

I've noticed that It's done this on a couple on a number of different video card configurations (Geforce 6800, 7950GT; 8800GT, Quadro FX 570),  and processors (Opteron 185, C2D T7700, C2Q 6600) with 4GB ram. I'm wondering if this is a quirk in Nvidia's drivers or something wrong with Poser's implementation of OpenGL.

Sreed performance is terrible compared to the OpenGL setting; it just seems weird that the older version of Poser will display it correctly on the preview.

Update: playing around with the preview render settings, I've found that checking "enhanced multilayer transparencies" makes it display properly, although performance really takes a dive with it on. Again, wondering why this would make a difference if Poser 6 does it correctly. Weird.

Where exactly is this option?  I've always had problems with Open GL in Poser 7, and I'd love to get this sorted out if I can.

I'm currently using an nVidia 7900 GS.  I've been thinking of upgrading to a 9600 GT.  Does anyone have any experience using this card with Poser 7?

It's been my experience that the video card's performance doesn't really affect Poser 7 a whole lot; the OpenGL option is only used in the preview mode, not in rendering. I've worked with P7 on a Geforce 6800, 7850GT, 8800GT and a Quadro 570m, and I couldn't tell much of any difference performance wise between them in Poser 7. If you are thinking of getting the 9600 only for Poser applications, you may be disappointed.

No, I'm a gamer so I'm considering a new card mainly for that reason.  But whatever I get, I'd really like to improve Poser's performance in preview mode.  I'm not that worried about rendering, since I often render in Vue anyway.  But sometimes the process of posing things and getting the scene set up the way I want it can get really painfully slow since Poser 7 and my video card don't seem to agree when it comes to Open GL, the result being that sreed is generally faster than trying to use Open GL.

I would guess that something is not right with your system's drivers then, as the performance on a Geforce 7900 should be much better then Sreed in OpenGL mode.

That's why I was curious about markschum's post about the opengl option under the Help menu.  I keep my video drivers fairly up to date -- I haven't installed the ones that just came out, but I have whatever the version is prior to that.  I recently re-installed Poser, and the dialog at the end of the install says that Poser will select sreed or opengl based on what it detects is supported -- and sure enough, when I first ran Poser after install, sreed was selected.

Anyway... if anyone has any advice as to how to chase this down (other than simply installing the latest drivers... again...) I'm all ears!  :)
