Subject: Need a new video card

yvesab ( ) posted Thu, 29 May 2008 at 2:07 PM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 8:22 AM

My computer uses an ATI Radeon 2600 "pro" PCIe card which seems to be uncompatible with the Vue6 pro Trial version (even in wireframe display ). Same with Poser6 open Gl
I'm looking for a reasonably priced card for replacement, say, around 150 euros.
Could you give me some advices ?
many thanks

You coukld stick with ati, and get the his x1950 pro 512 meg card, or go with nvidia instead. One thing going for nvidia now over ati, is a MUCH longer warranty period.. 5 years vs 12 months.

The his x1950 pro card does have twive the warranty of ATI's own, is also more overclockable, and runs a tad cooler then the official one.

Something to consider: replacing the video card in your system might also mean you need a new larger power supply as well, and that'll add to the cost of the upgrade.

I've got 4 ati cards here, (or his brand ati cards) and odds are my next will be an nvidia, mainly for the warranty.

Video card brand loyalty is foolishness.

Thanks I will investigate the PSU before deciding anything

I just read both nvidia and amd are releasing new video cards net month.. typically that means a price reduction on older video cards as well.. might be worth holding off for another month, to see what looks like the best value. Check Tom's Hardware guide for the best values of the month in different price catagories.

And typically a decent psu will run ya about $50 or so online, and shipped.

Just a suggestion...go to file/options/display options
Make sure open GL (hardware accelerated) is on.
I have an Nvidia GeFORCE 6200 overclocked AGP 256 MB DDR video card...pretty much mid-grade nowadays,
Vue used to be horribly sluggish and crashed all the time till I made sure I turned on the above option.
It simply flies and render full on fast everytime...works fast and has not crashed since.

EVGA 8600GT 512Mb  retails here for about € 60 or $ 90 ,  works like a charm, lifetime warranty in US/Can, 3 years for the rest of humanity.

I just downloaded V6 infinite PLE. It works much better than the trial version of Vue6 pro ; even with an even simpler ATI X2300, on my laptop. I'm a bit confused there, may the problem be somewhere else ?
I will retry with Vue ple on my other computer on monday ...
The price is not the same, and way out of my needs, and the trees out of the box are still as ugly as ever (I don't like Vue leaves)
