IMO it's not stupid not to know what WIP means - AFAIK you can't d/l a vocabulary, but that's all OT, anyway. IMO = In My Opinion WIP = well, you know that one AFAIK = As Far As I Know d/l = download OT = Off Topic ...just FYI (For Your Information). Didn't take me more'n a few years to figure out ;-)

Hi Folks! Jim, your pun refers to the chorus from a hit song called Whip It by The Dazz (no pun intended!) Band, a soul/funk group that recorded on Motown in the 80's. In one of the other things I do out in the real world (which I'm told exists somewhere away from my computer) I'm a disk jockey. And I've been wondering about Devo too. ummmm........the song by The Dazz Band was called "Let it Whip".....insofar as DEVO is concerned, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh work for Nickelodeon, whipping out such chart-toppers as the "Rugrats" theme and music for each episode.......one of my favorite shows, btw....... ;)

Actually, to be pedantic (which I am), TLA is really 'Three Letter Abbreviation'. It's only an acronym if it makes a word that's readily pronounceable. Since everybody says it as Tee - Ell - Ay, rather than Tla, it's just an abbreviation. Examples of acronyms are RADAR, LASER, SONAR, PIN. Incidentally, the UK magazine New Scientist has been running an occasional series on (if my memory serves me correctly) RAS or redundant abbreviation syndrome. Examples are PIN Number (the N in PIN stands for Number) and of course RAS Syndrome. Maybe we could have WIP Progress too. Actually, I'm pretty sure there is a list of all the web abbreviations somewhere on the WWW Web.

My first encounter with WIP was I veiwed a picture. The person said it was a wip and asked for comments. I said "Gee, that doesn't look like a whip to me"(I thought he mispelled whip). LOL

Well... one of the members of Devo is now playing for Perfect Circle, with Maynard James Keenan of Tool - if anybody cares what happened to them.

One that should be explained I think, especially with the wide availability of CNN is GOP (Grand Old Party = Republicans, for any Brits out there :), which I had to ask somebody on a list I was on, what it meant. Though somewhat amusingly, (at least if you're a democrat :) is the fact that in the UK, gop, and gopping are colloquial English for "disgusting" most often, but not exclusively, used to describe bad tastes :) later jb

Peter- Gee, I would have sworn that was DEVO's song, but I'm a long, long way from an being an expert on music! SPQR (seen in all those costume movies) = The Senate & People of Rome (Took me years to find out what that one ment!) Not seen too much in messages here, for soime reason.
