Always trying to improve my skills I was reading the "Realistic Buildings" tutorial by Emmanuel Noiaillier in Military Modelling Vol.38. No 1. (Jan 2008).

That got me wondering if it was possible to apply some of the ideas and techniques used in plastic modelling to 3d models and textures.  Using the tutorial as a basis heres the result and it's your's for free.

In the style of a old French Village - historical period anything from the 16th century to today - you now have ...

5 low-poly building props with modelled addons such as pipes and wires. These are parented to the large ground base which has a telephone pole and pavements. By placing buildings behind each other a nice realistic sense of depth can be achived.

The large ground base is wide enough to add a good selection of vehicles, but also free from any objects allowing the character artist an unobstructed view which allows for a good of camera focals.

The maps [from CG Textures - where Stonemason kindly shares] are logically mapped based on the needs of artists who like to place characters close to objects. For example wall textures are larger than roofs and chimney pots.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Military Modeling is still going??

I remember that from when I was about 5 and my Dad used to advertise in it as a painting service for models ...

very nice work :)

Thanks everyone for the nice remarks.

*Military Modeling is still going??
*Yep. Looking at the cover it's says Vol 38 so that must over 30 years now.
About the only other magazine going that long must be 2000AD. Thats 31 years old

*I remember that from when I was about 5 and my Dad
used to advertise in it as a painting service for models ...

*Ah yes - the golden age of Military toys and models!
Like those nearly indestructable and unpaintable green plastic Airfix models from the 1970's.
Proper toys them:)

BTW -  if you like this stuff check this guys book out [link above] - it's not very PC in parts - but thats why it's a great read :)*

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Wow !

Just took this into Vue and did a test render using the Poser shader tree, and it looks fantastic :)

I have a 5 second rather silly animation rendering out at the moment, so I'll stick it up on YouTube when it's done.

Thanks again, this is very generous of you !

Why thank you there Monsiuer geep :)

Re the scale  issue - yep I know about this - carrea and poser scalings are different.
Theres one other minor garlic flavoured gremlin as well - the ground got raised up a bit, so you'll need to tweak it.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.
