Subject: Looking like a marble statue?

ockham ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 9:10 AM · edited Wed, 01 January 2025 at 2:49 AM

Any good tips for making a figure look like a statue?

Specifically the eyes and hair need special treatment, I think ....
the rest is just a matter of color and deleting bump maps.

I think RDNA had some great free marble shaders.. grab them and apply them instead of actual character maps.

Load the hair, and then apply the marble shaders to that as well.

if you can grab a freebie pedistal or such, that';ll help sell the "statue" idea as well.

In most cases the stock P4 ugly hairs will look better in statues

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 9:30 AM

Remember you will get a break in the texture at each body part. I either use the python demo for unimesh, or export the figure and reload it as a single group . That way the texture flows as though carved from one piece. More important for marble than brass.

ockham ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 9:35 AM

Exporting and reloading as single group!  Sounds like a good hint.
I've noticed the need to smooth some joints, and that will be
also be easier with the posed model as a single object.

Already decided on a P4 'plastic' hair.

and don't forget, in poser you can just adjust the smoothing angle.. try 120%, and work up from there...

Slight different - this time with some Fresnel reflection. Takes longer to render. Which do you want?

Can't see much difference ... maybe the first one is better.

it's not bad, but you may want to put in a control to lessen the amount of veining - if you look at Michelangelo's David, (which is carved from Carrara Marble), you see almost no veining at all.

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 11:31 AM

Mapps has a statue texture for V2 on his site.

http://www.freewebs.com/mapps/

I've been using V3 and the marble texture from this set:

http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/shop/itemdetails/-/?item=2259&_m=d

Here is what that looks like:

OK - Of course the colors are adjustable by you, but is this better?

getting there.. very much so.. just need to work on the shine now...

I used to work at a marble and granite warehouse.. the shine that most ppl think marble and granite have is infact coatings and polish applied to finish counter tops etc. in it's natural state, it's actually quite matte.. most statues (david etc) are this matte texture.

Wasn't sure if we wanted new polished or old rough marble.

Tweaked the Blinn way down and broad now. How's this?

oh that's near perfect. the only thing you'd need is some subsurface (Marble is slightly translucent)  but we know how good poser is on that.... I'd stick a fork in that shader and all it done :)

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2008 at 12:38 PM

I have some SSS in there - I can turn it up. Is the SSS in marble kind of brown like milk does, or is it white?

it's white in nature, we're not talking massive amounts tho

OK Here's slightly more SSS. SSS removes some of the detail - should I add back in a bit more veining?

Looking good! You might want to pull her eyelashes in with a morph or a magnet. P4 cow-turd hair will look great on this.

Sort of like a Geico ad.  Bagginsbill is a Real Shader Expert, so we'll
bring in a Real Marble Man to help.

Cow poop Poser 4 hair, and a real Venus de Milo.

There's AO in the shader, and I got an artifact on the statue. You may have to mess with ray bias.

I'll upload the shader shortly.

here's an alternate.

Download the Free Bryce
Go into Poser. Export whatever character you have, into Bryce.
Start up Bryce
Import object
Ignore all requests for textures.
Use Bryce mats...;)

well, it would work...;)

Finally, here's my result.  The pose was rather tricky, because Judy's shoulders made an unnatural crease; had to 'objectify' the figure and then partly rebuild the shoulder area.   It's fairly satisfactory now, but still wants more tweaking.

This image is with the default 'dull white' marble texture.
