Something is going on between suicidegirlz and Rendo.  This sort of stuff with a quality vendor can't be good.

Well, poo! I had a couple of  things in my wishlist.

Ok, I pm'ed him as I was going to get Skar.  Hasn't answered yet, but according to his forum at AZM, apparently their tag line is being questioned by Rendo as well as a character's face.

It seems from the post there that another vendor seems to feel infringed on...  We'll see what happens.

I don't understand why the whole store was taken down though. Makes no sense to me.

real bummer . I put Suki in my cart yesterday, but ended up buying some sale stuff at DAZ.
She is a great looking character and texture.
hopefully they will be back.

gypsyangel ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2008 at 11:26 PM

It's not because of someone feeling infringed upon, except maybe DAZ since it's DAZ's textures that are being used for Mila and all his other characters. I am not here to try to convince anyone---suffice it to say I've seen the proof.  There appears to be some serious copyright infringement going on. And for that, Renderosity WILL pull someone's entire store. They don't do that lightly or arbitrarily, believe me.

Wow. That's a big step...from great vendor to counterfeiter.  Sort of a big pill to swallow.

Quote - I don't understand why the whole store was taken down though. Makes no sense to me.

  1. he allegedly used Daz material in his textures.
  2. tattoo flash that you find online is not royalty-free clipart for people to paste all over their textures. one of these days the $#!& will hit the fan when tattoo artist's copyright lawyers have a field day with Rosity and its merchants.
  3. somehow i doubt that Suicide Girls endorsed, or will be too happy about his using their trademarked name to promote his characters.
...im certainly not happy about the 'Girl Next Door' labeling on it -- but then someone who will tread all over protected IP like the Suicide Girls trademark will have absolutely no compunctions about capitalizing on a fellow merchant's successful product line.

im sick to death of people like this smugly harvesting content from honest artists to make a quick buck. go sell fakes or bootlegged software on EBAY like the rest of your ilk and get the #%@$ off of Renderosity.

wow!  Were the tattoos tracked back to somewhere?  Some sites sell the flash and Robert claimed to have drawn those (yea, yea I know all about the "claiming" that gets done)

I just purchased Skarr directly from him so I am definitely going to look at that texture.  If it infringes I'd need to know that in order to get a refund from Paypal...

Anyone know which DAZ textures so I can compare?

'Girl Next Door' type slogans have labeled MANY things over the years, so I really don't think
there is any reason to be unhappy over it. You aren't the first to use it, you won't be the last.
As to the 'SuicideGirlz' name, I'm not familiar enough with trademarks and copyrights to know
about that one. Does making it one word and changing a letter make it good, or not??

The tats, however, are a different story. IF they are copied, it WOULD be a violation. Hope
not though. I only have Mila, not being all that interested in yet MORE textures, but I love
the Spec maps and SSS control maps. Guess we'll need to wait and see. :(

i was pointing out that i would expect no less from someone who casually rips off the protected Suicide Girls trademark than to also capitalize on the success of a fellow merchant's product line. that is all.
(...and for the record, i was the first to use it on a poser character pack. the original GND pack was released 7 years ago, and at the time i did a marketplace search to make sure it wasnt being used by anyone else.)

i dont understand why this is such a big problem for some merchants. theres nothing 'special' about the name you choose, its not what makes the product successful. so go choose something you can develop into your own line.
for example, people dont buy 'Daz 3d's The Freak' or 'The Girl' because they like the name. so why would you make a competing 3D model named 'The Freak' or 'The Girl', despite the fact that its not trademarked, unless you either lived in a bubble or were deliberately trying to capitalize on the success of the former?

Here's one comparison. You can look for yourself if you have Mila and Daz's Hi Res textures. I'm no expert, but this is extremely damning in my book. This is Mila-Daz comparison. They were not altered in any way except to label them. They were both opened in Irfanview and a screen cap was taken.

Yes, the tattoos were tracked back. He was lifting them from Paul Booth of Last Rites, Cherry Creek and Ruth from Eternal, JUST to name a few. Those places didn't think it was very cute, not to mention Suicide Girls were not amused.

He got away with this for close to a year, but you can't get away with it forever. He was trying to punk out a group of artist with art, fer chrissakes...he was bound to fall sooner or later. And if anyone of you have Suki and Skarr---look at the skins. They're BOTH THE SAME texture---it just happens to be DAZ's Hi Resolution texture for V4. He was going to sell people the same texture in 20 different characters with just different tattoos.

Like I said, I don't have to convince anyone---you can look at the proof on your own hard drive. Take them out and compare. He also claimed everything in the pack was his, and his alone. He tried to say that his only resource was photos from 3DSK---read his readme if you have it. There again, he was not being truthful. Those are Rebelmommy's eyes, DAZ's skin, and tattoos from all over.

Of course everyone thought they were great---he did steal the best out there. :-|

Using a name or part of the name of another very popular product to promote yourself is very copycattish - especially in a creative field.  Merchants should develop their own branding, rather then using branding someone else developed - behind their back, and in the same community.

I was just starting to notice suicidegirlz products - it's unfortunate they did all theese things infringing on rights of others.

On the Mila tex, he's taken the V4 head tex (it's in Textures/Daz/Characters/MilWoman/V4) and I think it is something like V4StFaceM.jpg (not the Sample "Smpl" texes that come up when you load V4.2) The mole on her left side of her mouth has been cloned out, the texture has been brightened and the right side of the mouth had been copied and flipped over to make a symmetrical lip instead of the original photo one. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I opened the two textures side by side in Photoshop..I really liked the perky Mila and thought her tatts were bright and colorful. I can't say anything about the tatts because I haven't done the legwork to compare them..seeing the Daz tex was enough and I just shut Photoshop then.  I use my characters to do commercial art and this meant that I had to delete all the files off my hd and re-render a gallery image.  I'm just grateful Mila didn't go on a book cover.

Hi guys,

Because of the potential legal problems surrounding this issue, we cannot allow discussion in the public until we have concluded our investigation and come to a resolve of some sort.

Everyone who has purchased products from the Suicidegirlz store will be contacted once the investigation is complete.

I am going to close this thread, but leave it in place so that we don't get a lot of different threads asking the same question.

If you have a specific question about your purchase, you can contact store@renderosity.com for support.

Can I just remind everyone that until an investigation has run its course, discussion in public can prejudice any legal case, and is therefore not desirable. Additionally, staff will not comment on the issues until they are resolved - again this is so as not to prejudice any legal case arising, and to prevent any allegations of defamation.

Thanks for your understanding, folks.
