The Type 166 Schwimmwagen is the most mass-produced amphibious car in history, and arguably the most capable light military wheeled off-roader in World War II.

Seen today at a WW2 Renactment.

The squirrels are too funny,  I keep giving mine new challenges.  This squirrel seems to be depositing his opinion on this attempt.  But he figured it out in about a day.

Carolina Wrens took over a watering pitcher, built a nest and raised a new batch. This is building the nest.   The male will build more than one nest and the female chooses the one she wants to lay her eggs.

More nest building..a nest which is like a cave neatly made of moss, grass, leaves, etc.

TomDart ( ) posted Fri, 04 July 2008 at 7:48 PM

The nest was completed, the female came in to lay eggs. While she broods the eggs, the male brings her delicious bugs and other tasties.  When the eggs are hatched, both male and female work to feed the chicks.

TomDart ( ) posted Fri, 04 July 2008 at 7:53 PM

After a time, there was no more feeding at the nest.  The chicks had fledged, left the nest. That was a week ago.  The juvinels will stay near the parents for a couple more weeks learning to survive and be independent wrens,  at first deeper in the woods away from the nest.

These birds are quite small, about 12cm or 4 inches from tip to tip. Take away the tail and the bird body is certaily tiny.  They have very large voice and lovely song.  The volume of notes from tiny birds still amazes me.

The nest cavity is difficult to see because the handle of the waterng pitcher blocks the view.

Tom, happy to see yours faired much better than mine this year.  (Dirty Rat Snake in my gallery)
I have learned to keep the doors on my out buildings closed during nesting season and block a couple of small openings to my screened front porch.  I have also built a couple of nesting sites which they have used. Any cozy sheltered spot is game for them.   I didn't know about the multiple nest fact,  I had wondered why they disappeared from the nest in my water softener for a short period.

The shot of Boscombe Arcade looks very much like a place in Leeds that I shopped on my last visit, right in the heart of downtown; I can't remember what it was called, but it had the same old style charm.  Thanks for the memories!
