Subject: Pimp my Judy, a true poser story.

bopperthijs ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2008 at 6:20 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 7:33 AM

A couple days ago mr. D.P Hoadley started a thread with the title: "Why is Judy so little liked?" Well, the answers were the obvious: she is ugly as sin, she looks like ***, V3 and V4 are much better... and so on, and so on. Including yours truly, everyone had it's reason to dislike her. But when I read the positive comments, I was wondering if I wasn't a little too biased? After all it isn't fair to compair a 6 or 7 year old model with latest top of bill model.

This week I made one of my most realistic renders in poser with the assistance of the great VSS-program of Baggingsbill and I was wondering if it wasn't possible to apply this program to Judy and made a beautiful render of her, without to many Frankensteining.

On MTV you have the TV-program "Pimp my ride" where old and rusty cars are transformed in beautiful and sexy hotrods. Just like that I wanted to pimp up Judy and make of this ugly duckling the star of ball.
And what a better time to do this, then on a dull sunday afternoon.
This story is dedicated to Baggingsbill and mr. D.P.Hoadley for his neverending faith in Judy, Posette and all the older Poserpeople.

The coming posts I tell my story step by step. So read and wonder...

The first thing I had to do was to load Judy, I hadn't used her for years, and although I'm using Poser7-pro by now I still have the old Poser5 runtime. To be sure I had the latest version and all the Judy stuff I reloaded the Poser5 content from Content paradise , re-installed it in the Poser5 runtime, and loaded Judy: Here is the first render with the default poserlights. The rendersettings are on it's best but the picture is very appealing, favourite or not, the face just isn't pretty.

Here with a different lightset with an IBL light and AO, but it doesn't make her prettier, you get a good impression of the skintexture which isn't much either. So have we have to take stronger measures!

Lucky enough, Judy works very well in the poserfaceroom, and it isn't very difficult to make prettier face. Here are my settings in the faceroom.

And rendered, the skin isn't still very much but at least the face looks rather pretty...

For those who missed and are interested, there are 31 (or more) page long thread about this innovative utility, with which you can change any skin, or other surface into a realistic shader. If you want to know more and where to get this utility this thread is a must. Anyway, this is Judy face with VSS applied, for the initiated, I lowered the diffuse value  and made skintexture-hue a little greener to get a darker and less pink skin, I also changed the blinn-shader to make it more shinier. Looks better, doesn't it? especially the eyes.

I wasn't very happy with the skintexturemap, and allthough there are some free texture for Judy, they aren't very good. But there is a happy coïncidence: Judy can take Victoria 1 and 2 texture, and there are hundreds of. I took one of the best there are: B-Gen Gaia texture of Zetastudios3D, You can also use universal texture coverter and remap a V3 texture to V2. Here is the render with the texture (which has also make-up options WOW!) and of course VSS applied. Another thing that I did was to raise the eyes by one milliter and push them in the head by 0.5 mm, It changed the old bug-eyed of Judy.

And here she is with Kozaburo's Kyokohair. Kozaburo made several hair-props for Judy, and although he hasn't made anything for a while, he's still the best.

Take That all you people too lazy to work with Judy. :tt2: All she needed was a little make up and plastic surgery. 😉

Ugly or not is not a thing to me.I have to make my own morphs and that's it.The realy  problems with judy are joints and mesh issues. You cannot bend her hip without distorting the lower hip spine in a freaky way. There are hip vertics merged that must not be merged.Anan and newJudy are great improvements to stock Judy but this issues have never been fixed.

I personally rather use either SydneyG2 or Miki2 . I never personally like the default figures that Poser came with.

Sydney comes with P7 ;) I also prefere G2 Females and Miki 2 .If there only were solutions for shoulder and ellbow joints.

what I want to know is where you get this VSS you all keep talking about? I have searched for it and it's no where to be found. Is this a utility you purchase or free?

Help!

thanks!

bopperthijs ( ) posted Mon, 25 August 2008 at 12:20 PM · edited Mon, 25 August 2008 at 12:20 PM

It's a free utility, there is a long thread about it  on the forum where you can find a link and  a lot of information, but to save you time, here is the link:

poserbagginsbill.googlepages.com/vsshomepage

For information how to use it, I recommend reading the thread.

Good luck

Bopper.

Good work bopperthijs, if you want to do something nice, you can do it with Judy, Posette, V3, V4 or the Poser 1 Female, thats the difference between Art and a simple "click and render", with this simple step by step you show it, all you need is to know the stuff you are using. And about "she is ugly like a sin" Who said sins are ugly? most of them are somehow forbiden  but at the same time most of them are pure pleasure 🆒  LOL   very bad comparison!

Very nice. I think most of the poser figures can be made to look good if you put some effort into it. (Though the low res p4 gal may need a miracle worker. ) You have proved at least one of them can be.

This is a custom Judy character I made, after playing around with variations on Ken1's Lilliana for Judy. (Nudity tagged because her nipples show faintly through her top). DPH

I've always said that this is how Poser was meant to be used. Any mesh -- even the derided P4guy -- can be made to look good if you treat it as a blank slate.

Treating any of the figures like blank lates can work if you have the advanced skill sets needed to create your own custom morphs or to fix the anomalies prevalent in all the characters out there. But if you are like many of us Poser users who don't know how to alter the meshes and need to use the default options and accompanying dials or wind up using whatever is out there to try and build something form what comes out of the box it doesn't work.
For me I have seen images of all these figures we keep bringing up in these threads. Some creators have a deep passion for fixing them up and making them somewhat presentable or "Realistic" for want of better verbage. And that is great.

I use Poser to get finished images and not to spend hours or days or weeks tweaking meshes. So if there is a figure that comes pretty ready to go with the necessary dials and support to give me a good range of character options then that is the one I go with. I own Judy and V3 and V4 and all the G2 figures and the one I keep going back to believe it or not, is Vicki2. Yes she has bad joints and is lower res than some of the newer figures but for what she cost and for what she is capable of giving me in my work she is the TIT!

I would like and use MIKI more but she has god awful feet and not to psyched about her hands though her face can be gorgeous. Her figure is more petite and is nice too for those realistic "real Girl" figure/proportions compared to even Vicki2 whose figure is taller and more model proportioned.

never liked the default characters in Poser 6 and 7 specially the female. Looks toonish for my tastes.

No give me V2 for a good all around out of the box figure.

Not true. You have to look at the dials and work them incrementally in tandem with each other, and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. But it has to be done incrementally, not 1.0 on everything. For example, the overwhelming bulk of my work uses Ichiro, for whom there are no usable custom morphs (nor do I know how to make them, sorry). Yes, you have the fae stuff and all that, but the modifications to the face, head structure, body, and overall scale that I use are the result of just the dials, nothing more. And I have an Ichiro now that is uniquely my own.

If I may suggest, learn how to use that grouping tool; it can be your best friend when dealing with body parts that seem ungainly or out of scale. Dr. Geep has an excellent tutorial on the grouping tool; I really suggest looking into it.

I often wondered what that tool was for but in Poser 4 right?
Do you have a link to this tutorial...for shits and giggles i would like to at least try it out.

kobaltkween ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2008 at 5:20 PM

i think it's worth mentioning that SeanMartin also made tons of clothes fit Ichiro that weren't made for him.  and, iirc, at a time when Tailor was it for fitting, and he used only scaling and built in morphs.  so he definitely has experience using basic features to a definite advantage.

SeanMartin ( ) posted Tue, 26 August 2008 at 5:21 PM

Do a member search for Dr. Geep, or look for one of his many threads around here. It has a link to his web page that has scores of tutorials, on everything from prop building to grouping to using the wind tool to animation. They're all invaluable.

Thanks, although I have to admit that Wardrobe Wizard has made me a bit lazy in that department. :)

Nice work, Bopper - I must find the time to explore the face room some time. I'd wondered if it was possible to use it as a starting point for custom morphing, and I think you just proved that it is.
