Subject: Feedback idea: Tabs --> Links--> texture maps ot show image size info?

silverblade33 ( ) posted Sat, 20 September 2008 at 5:17 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:35 PM

Posted this in feedback section on E-On :)

Hi there :)
A suggestion I'd like to see for Vue:

When working with imported objects, especially Poser models, a real problem is the size of texture maps, as large ones can be excessively big, in regards to how much resources the larger ones use up.

I have to hunt through all the materials, checking image texture sizes in the Material editor window. Only the large ones, 2000+ in size concern me.

What I'd suggest is, that in the LINKS tab, where it shows image icons and names, that under neath the icon name it shows the map size as well for example:

M3body.jpg
4000x4000

This would let users easily see which texture maps maybe too large and thus need to be exported, reduced in Photoshop etc, and brought back in at smaller, easier to use size.
:)

That's a good suggestion. Even better, IMO, would be to have an option to reduce the map size right there in Vue! Or to have an option on the import dialog to automatically reduce all map sizes above certain value, to a given max value. Something similar in concept to the "resize object" in the import dialog for Poser objects, but applied to texture maps.

Aye, "re-size on import" would rock! but "On a per project basis" not a permanent option, too easy to forget to run it off for a portrait ! ;)

OMFG...had 500 or so materials AFTER some optimization on this scene I'm working on, down to 300 now...combining ones I don't need to be too different.
And TONS of resizing, what a frikkin' chore!

Agree... with both of you!

i had a scene file become corrupted because of obnoxiousely large texture files.  well, the file isnt corrupted - i can open it, but every time i render, vue crashes so hard i have to reinstall.

at least i THINK it was obnoxiousely large texture files... had both freak & v4 in it, and i know im lax in resizing the textures cus its a PITA

PLEASE dear E-On, listen to the request and include it somehow!?

and you know, i actually found a texture file for V4 once that was gasp 6000x6000.

i think they wanted to do a close-up of her nose or something.  but yeesh.

one thing i enjoy about vue.... if you import say, v4, and keep away from that repose feature - you can delete individual body parts....

great fun de-limbing an uncooperative subject....

btw, silver... loved the funnies you did with the wizard =D

Melikia,

hehe glad ye liked 'em!! ;)

oh another tip for scenes...if a material isn't important, duplicate it!

for example, say you have a scene that soon grows to 200 materials or more!

well say 10 of those are iron/steel variations, but none are up close, well, just copy one material over ALL of them! (provided, if it uses a texture, the texture fills ALL the image, no use having a strip of metal down the middle and white elsewhere!)

long as it's a good material and not up close, it won't show much and will be fine...though I do my trick of mixing in dirt or other material as a Mixed material with a distribution function, so, same material but each item will look a bit different ;)
Tricksy bastard, ain't I? :thumbupboth:

This saves up resources!

For example, current scene I have made is gigantic, would have about 500 materials or more but I've pruned it down to 300.
Going from 350 to 300 materials saved 8 megs of the compressed file size: 260 to 252 megs.

All those # of materials add up to eat resources.

and I've went through all the materials' textures to reduce Poser image sizes.
What a **** PAIN IN THE ARSE job that was, yeech!! :p

I may have mentioned it before, but the solution I have found to handling those awful Poser imports was switching to Daz Studio and export .obj and let it convert textures for Bryce...works like a peach in Vue. No out of memory issues and you can handle the mats on a per object basis or per group or whatever you desire upon export from DS. I seriously couldnt recomend DS 2 enough. It has improved my workflow and my quality of art a great deal.

trepez,
alas, I'd need to set up again oh 20 gigs or so of Poser stuff for it, and download files for the D/S stuff as well :(

Nope, not at all. You can add your Poser runtime to DS and the download is rather small. I have a 64G runtime external and thats how i use it in DS.And there is never and problems with missing bumps and transmaps ect.

Forgot to mention, I dont even have poser installed on my machine anymore,and it works like a charm(;

hm...interesting
Would be a LOT of D/S downloads though, eek
ie when you buy on DAZ, lot of items have a D/S seperate download too which I never bother to get

Poser, IMHO is headed down the tubes...venture capitialists don't give a rat's arse about things (ie, the recent buyout) :(

What i did was set up my file system like this C: program files/e-on/poser/runtime that way all my .zip files and installers go there anyway. Poser for me has sucked for a ling time, and now that I know I can get DS to work 300% better without hang ups and error messages...Poser is a ghost...
