How did you create the figure, was it by:-

a) Writing a hierarchy file (PHI) and using the Poser menu File > Convert Hierarchy file.
or
b) Importing the model and using the set up room?

I'm going to guess that you used wrote a hierarchy file.

What rotation order did you use for the "down" part? In the model it is XYZ, was it that in the hierarchy file or did you change it later using the joint editor? Or maybe you changed the up rotation order?

Somewhere, somehow this has got corrupted. The down sees the up rotation order as XZY, the up sees its rotation order as YXZ. They must match. I seam to remember that Poser 5 was less sympathetic to users changing the rotation order. If I am correct, you have not done anything wrong but Poser 5 has not been able to correctly accommodate your editing.

Try again using this hierarchy file:-

###################################
objFile :Runtime:Geometries ------ etc
1 down yzx
2 up yzx
###################################
