Subject: Cloud Detail

LMcLean ( ) posted Thu, 25 September 2008 at 12:59 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 3:47 PM

When creating a cloud the default clouds usually render with a lot of grain. I can't seem to figure out how to change this so the cloud still retains it's current shape but the grain is reduced.

I selected the cloud material and went into the function editor and reduced the settings but the clouds ended up filling in and the clouds became more "dense". I want the shape to remain the same only the grain to be reduced when rendering.

Where do I change this setting?

Thanks

you can turn your atmo quality up in the sky/fog/haze tab

Which of the settings would I use to accomplish this? I see the "quality boost" setting is set to 4.00 does this need to be uppped and how high should I go?

Thanks

Trepz suggestion may eventually not be sufficient in all cases and in all types of clouds. In some cases, you may also want to increase anti-aliasing settings (number of subrays and quality). For example, in some of my recent images with clouds, I had to increase AA quality to 98% and subrays max to 20 or more to get rid of grain.

Ooops, we cross posted. That's precisely what I was saying, increasing quality there is not enough in some cases. You aparently found one of those cases.

I noticed you have lots of fog. That can also help to produce grain.

Rutra is correct. Shadow density also can effect grain, as can aerial perspective with Volumetric and so can god rays for that matter:D So basically just fiddle around with it. But generally turning up your AA and boosting quality helps, but i wouldnt go to far past 4 as it can take a real hit on memory.
