Attached Link: My first walk cycle on youtube

After doing peoples heads in on different forums and much tutorial watching, I've completed(?) my first walk cycle.

I've slammed it on youtube for those who are interested (warning... she's topless....).

Somehow when I .avi'd it, it got a bit squished :(

There's something wrong with it... but I can't place it.. it just looks... wrong somehow.

Any suggestions for what it is that looks wrong? 'Cos it's doing ma heed in.

Oh, and she will be getting dressed, I just did it topless for visibility to get the jiggles setting something like right.

:edit: and a couple of other things :)

When an animation has been saved, Poser opens Media Player right? Can I change this association? I want it to open Media Player Classic, because it crashes Media Player 10 :(

And on a tutorial I saw, when the fella was scrolling through the frames or moving cameras, the poser figure changed to boxes - helping the computer move through frames faster. Anyone know how I can turn this feature on?

Lastly... many thanks to this guy, Larry Mitchell...

Great tutorial, taught me a LOT, in fact, a VERY lot.

Looks good to me!  You did well for your first try!  WTG!

It looks awesome but I think the thing that looks wrong is her knees look bent a little too much... hope that helps....and yep i agree wtg!

its possible to save that walk cycle in walk designer right?

Passion is anger and love combined. So if it looks angry, give it some love!

drew555 ( ) posted Fri, 26 September 2008 at 5:50 AM

I don't know,

If it is, that opens up a whole new set of opportunities.

Next, it's time to get it to look right and then see if I can use it to make her walk through a scene.

Any tips?

Good work, I assume you're using IK's if so, I'd suggest raising the hip slightly as this might just pull a bit of the bend out of the knees. Easiest way to do this, select the hip, in the parameter dials, click the arrow next to Y trans and from the pop-up select graph, extend the vue so that you can see all frames (drag the bar at the bottom till it fills the space) Right click inthe graph and drag the mouse till all frames are highlighted, then hold down Ctrl, cursor should change to 2 vertical arrows, now you can move all key frames up or down. Do this in very small amounts at a time till you have what you want. I think only a small adjustment is needed. The graph should be a nice wave form as hips move up and down slightly as we step. The box display you asked about can be set from main toolbar Display>Tracking>Fast or with a small icon usually bottom left of the project window, there's a square icon which lets you set display port options. Next a sphere, turns into a sphere in a box for fast tracking or a box for bounding boxes and beside that another icon for turning ground shadows on and off

Thanks Dave.

I got the hips raised by going to each of the keyframes (I have only four) and copied and pasted a new slightly higher Y value in there.

Looks a lot better now.

And as for the boxes thing, many thanks.

I'll update here before too long, she's getting clothes now :)

YouTube let you post a topless animation?

drew555 ( ) posted Fri, 26 September 2008 at 1:31 PM

oo I never thought of that.

Get ready for it to disappear.....

But I didn't know how else to post it :(

Oh, and my dynamic clothing isn't working out well.... I'm getting craziness in the clothing :(

You did a good job in rotating the hips on the Z-axis, but for a better efffect you should rotate the chest as well but contrary (side by side on the abdomen and the chest of course) You should also rotate the hip on the Y-axis a little and the shoulders (chest) in reverse. That way you will get more swing in it.

I have started a static render, but I will post a pic of the craziness as soon as it is finished (probably tomorrow lol).

I'll post a vid of how the walk looks now at the same time (if I can find somewhere that's not youtube to host it, 'cos I'm convinced they'll pull topless stuff down :( ).

I uploaded the issue I am having here....

...because Poser decided to have a fit and lock up losing the last 2 hours work :(

Never mind eh?

Sorry that the video is all swoopy, but it's the best one I had saved before I went onto something else lol.

it looks o.k. to me.  like where they teach one to walk with a book balanced on one's
head in school.

Considering your dynamic simulation, which poser version are you using?

It is a good walk cycle, but the problem I see as is mentioned above, her legs never straighten out. It looks like she is walking in a permanant crouching down position. Walk around in front of a mirror and see how straight your leg gets between each step :-)

operaguy ( ) posted Fri, 26 September 2008 at 8:48 PM

on the cloth....something is poking thru and/or the cloth is resisting folding. You may wish to try turning down "fold resistance" and turn up shear resistence.

Are you absolutely sure that in the first frame the cloth is NOT touching the skin?

drew555 ( ) posted Sat, 27 September 2008 at 3:52 AM

I was pretty sure that there was no cloth touching skin at the beginning... but I'll re-run the simulation with bigger clothing and the fold resistance down and the shear resistance up.

I'm using Poser 7.

When I had her legs straightening right out it looked kinda weird.. her legs kinda 'popped' when they got to being straight :s

I think I found my problem.

It's a little embarassing, but a lesson learnt none the less....

Intersecting finger doh!

Poser 6 had some problems with dynamic simulation, but a lot has been fixed in poser7 rn poser pro. Problems like this can be caused by lack memory as well Ram as on your harddisk, because cloth simulations need a lot of space for their files. But as you showed, this can also cause problems. Well for a first attempt  isn't it bad.

3Dave ( ) posted Sat, 27 September 2008 at 5:33 AM

If you need the cloth to be depressed by the hands as they swing back and forth and avoid Poser trying to drag them inside the dynamic cloth, I'd recomend parenting a primitive ball to the hand, use the xyz dimensions to deform it into an oval shape that covers the hand. Then add that to the collide against list and check ignore hands. Turn off visibilty for rendering.  This saves a bit of time in calculation too. There were some ready-made smart props (where I got the idea from) in the freepozitory, but I just did a quick search and couldn't find them

Attached Link: Final preview animation before the big render :o

Thanks Dave, that's a clever tip, and one I will be using in future.

Remember this is just a "my first walk cycle" project, so moving the arms out a bit isn't really an issue, it's just a learning experience.

I've repaired my crazy cloth, and got a far as the link shows.....

Just a case of rendering it nicely instead of using the preview animation settings and ironing out the jump in the loop and I'm going to call this little project finished.

Then I'll move onto trying to use this walk cycle in the walk designer or something in an attempt to get here to actually move through a scene.

Look out in a few hours for the final rendering of "my first walk cycle", and then a new thread begging for help in making her move lol.

Attached Link: Wooohaaaaaa finished!

Well, it's finished.

It's still not perfect, and for some reason I seem to keep squashing the videos but hey ho.

If anyone is interested I still have the .bvh file saved - but I wouldn't know how to go about distributing it (if anyone was interested).

Many, many thanks for all the help I recieved here, it's very much appreciated - all in the name of education!

Hey, this was great, drew! You did extremely well for your first. (as for me, stuff like this is well beyond my ken). The only thing I see is that when a woman is walking in heels, (or anyone for that matter, I suppose), the heel is the first thing to touch the ground when she swings her foot forward. Here, it looks like she's placing her foot flat.

Or maybe it's just my eyes. 8/

Ennyhoo...it's still fantastic and I love the way the clothes move, too.
