Subject: OT: moaning and groaning

I might be halfway out of commission for a few days.  I managed to get
hit by a car while crossing a street.  The driver was just pulling out, probably 10 mph.
I got thrown through the air, ended up with some bad scrapes on elbows and
knees, and a bruised or sprained left arm.  Nothing seems to be broken.
Since my left arm is my dominant and mousing hand, I'll try to avoid
using it for a few days, let it loosen up.

I've had similar injuries in younger days from bicycle falls, but I'm not
younger any more, so not sure how long it will take.

OMG!!

Rest, apply ice packs to your arm and probably your back, which will probably be hurting tomorrow.  Take Ibuprophen for the pain and to reduce the swelling.

Did you get checked out at the ER? If not you really should go. The body is not meant to be thrown up in the air and land on concrete. Plus it will help with any claim you have for physio, which you may find you need.  The car driver's insurance should cover that for you and any other medical costs that you incur, even loss of wages if necessary.

Take care :)

The EMTs showed up on scene and poked and prodded me for a while,
seemed to find nothing broken.  Thanks for the aspirin hint; for some
reason I didn't think about swelling.

No, not aspirin.  That is a blood thinner and if you have bruising, it will actually make it worse.

Ibuprophen is the drug found in Advil, Motrin etc.  I always buy the generic because it's cheaper and works just as well.

I hope you feel better soon! I've been hit in similiar circumstances when I was 21 yrs old. If it hit me last week, I'd be killed instead of just discomforted. Ahh, youth and health.  I wish I still had it.

Ooh, poor David! Listen to Nurse Acadia and do as she tells you.

Some good quotes in this conversation, by the way...

"I'm not younger any more".

"The body is not meant to be thrown up in the air..".

Sorry, they just made me giggle! I'm not unsympathetic, really!
Hope you heal quick, David.. look after yourself.

Acadia is right.  If not the local ER, make an immediate appointment with your PCP.  Although you may not have suffered major bone breakage, hairline fractures and torn ligaments can give chronic problems down the road.

themomster0 ( ) posted Wed, 08 October 2008 at 6:39 PM

Yes, make sure you are seen at your doctor's office.  My daughter was hit in similar circumstances (driver was just starting to turn and didn't see her).  The result was visible bruising and scrapes, but what is NOT visible are closed-head injuries.  Even if your head didn't hit the pavement, you could still have some symptoms.  Your doctor knows what to look for.

masha ( ) posted Wed, 08 October 2008 at 7:07 PM

Sorry to hear this Ockham :(

If you feel the need to rest the left arm the pain must be significant.

I wouldn't dismiss it for too long.  Someone I know thought his injuries would just get better in time   and ended up having to have an operation  on his shoulder a few months later.  Not meant to scaremonger, just that insurance could present difficulties if you don't  have it checked out in a timely manner.

Like  questioning if  your injury really occurred at the time of that accident etc.  They can think up all sorts of reasons  to block claims.

Just confirmation that everything is ok is also reassuring.

Hope it's all better soon. :)

Try to get the doc to give you a perscription for Tylenol with codine. Not addictive unless you are already an addict and does not make you high. But boy does that take away the pain or what.

Very sorry to hear about your accident.  :crying:

If you'd lived nearby I'd run over with some of my home made Marigold/Aloe Vera creme which is very good for healing bruses and such. But the thought will have to do.

Get well soon (not a DAZ's soon).

I wouldn't wish DAZ "soon" healing on my worst enemy!  Lordy.

Just checking in. How you feeling after a night of sleep?   I hope you slept well as you could. 👍?

@Joelglaine:
The fellow who hit me was extremely sorry... was a decent young man
who was distracted by talking to his girlfriend on cellphone.
His mother came along and gave me a ride home, plus a nice dose
of solicitude.

This morning, feeling somewhat better.  The arm is nearly normal,
but the back has stiffened up as expected.  I'll just keep relaxing.

Nothing is more relaxing to me than a cup of chamomile tea and a long soak in a hot bath followed by a long nap..

Heck, that sounds so good, I think I'll do that, myself.

My older sister got hit by a car once when I was a kid.  We were crossing the street to go to the groceries, standing in the center waiting for a chance to get over and she got smacked in the butt.  Scary thing is she thought I was standing too far ahead of her and wanted me to move behind her just before she got hit.  If I was standing behind her like she wanted it could have been no more me.  I think the moral of this story is don't always listen to advice from people with bad judgement.

Anyways it's been an occasional pain in the rear for her ever since.  Though I think I'll stop now before I get car-ied away and start punning.  ;)

Hope you recover soon.

Man this is the 5th person that I know of this week that has been injured by a car in some way. What is it with people and cars?? Can you say 2500 pound weapon?

I hope you get better soon and seeing your doctor sounds like a plan.

That and blasted cell phones which so many have glue to their ear these days. I am scared to even think about the number of near misses I see because people are texting or holding a phone to their ear or have an ear plug in their ear for a cell phone.

Update: This aft I put on my shoes to walk to the store.  (Getting back on the
horse, as they say)

I noticed that the right shoe was covered with tire tread marks on one side.

Shivers!  One inch closer, and I would have a crushed foot instead of a lot
of scrapes and bruises.   Can't quite use the word 'lucky', but maybe I ended
up at the lucky end of unlucky..........

Getting hit by a car=Unlucky
Getting hit and crippled or killed by a car=Tragic

Getting an unlucky result as compared to Tragic=FORTUNATE

You are very fortunate!  Unlucky, but fortunate.

Go ahead and put yourself in the lucky catagory...It's all perspective. My hubby got ran over by a tractor a few years ago and  broke both his feet, both his ankle and his thigh. I know you don't feel like it, but compared to him you, are lucky...He considers himself lucky (and so do I) because if the thing hadn't stalled, it was have hit his back side and spine next. He also feels he is lucky because the doctors thought he would loose the one foot and he didn't.
I know it's hard to feel positive about things when you're in pain, but you will heal.
