Subject: DSLR Owners - what is you MOST used lens?

L8RDAZE ( ) posted Mon, 06 October 2008 at 12:45 PM · edited Sat, 25 January 2025 at 6:42 PM

Just wondering is all....

My everyday lens is an 18-250mm on my A700.    Seems to cover the range I use most....more reach would be nice....but I have the 500mm for that.

Looking to get a wide angle lens next....Sigma 10-20 was on my list, but now I hear Tamron will release a 10-24 in Canon/Nikon Mount.  Hopefully a Sony/Minolta version won't be too far behind.

My standard lens is a Sigma 18-50 f:2.8.
But, depending on whether I go hunting landscapes or insects, I walk around with the Sigma 10-20 (nearly always at 10 and corrected in Bibble) or the Sigma 105 which comes to 1:1.

If I could start again, I'd prefer to change that last one into a Sigma 150 1:1. But, like James Brown sang: " The way I like it, that's the way it is." It'll do.

My everyday lens is the Olympus Zuiko 14-45mm 3.5-5.6 that came as a kit lens with my Oly E-500. Although I got two macro lenses and two telezooms for other occasions, that old kit lens holds up pretty well as a general walkabout lens and I haven't really felt the need to upgrade to a faster and more expensive one... :o)

I'm waiting for the Zuiko 9-18mm to come out though... would love to try that one.

I only have 1 lens... :crying: But I do use it all the time... 🆒(18-55 IS)

When I bought my Canon EOS 350D, I didn't want the lense that went along with the body in the kit, so I only bought the body and added my Sigma DC 18-200mm lense separately. It's the only lense I've got and I'm totally happy with it as it also works for close-ups pretty well (200mm with a minimum distance of 45cm). Still thinking about buying a "real" macro-lense but until then my close-up lenses that can be screwed to the front of the big one (bought them at ebay for 18euros incl. postage) will just have to do...

My Sigma 10-20 is generally attached to the body most of the time.  It really depends on where i am going and what i'll be taking photos of / my aim for the day.  My "lite" pack (sling bag) at the moment is my 10-20, 8mm fish and my 70-200. 20-70 gap you say... i hardly take anything at that range it seems. Sometimes i swap the 8mm for my 50mm.

And i have heard similar rumblings about a 10-24mm tamron... might be good to have the extra range i suppose and it will be a "new" lens which hopefully means better than the last "generation"...

I tend to either go wide or long.  So it's 16 - 35 or straight to 100 - 400 and sometimes longer with a 1.4x extension. last Thursday I got a 24 - 105 so I'm trying that out at the moment.  All my lenses are now Canon L lenses yes expensive but they are worth it the quality is so much better.

Must admit I tend to use my Sigma 10 - 20 a lot. Then comes my 24 - 85 which I use quite often.
I also  a 70 - 300 that I hardly ever use.
I was just wondering how many of you guys and gals always find like myself that when ever you want to do something in a rush you never have the right lens on the camera :-)

ejn, THAT's exactly why I bought a wide-range-lense - because I just hate changing lenses and always having the wrong one on...

My 24-105 is probley my most used lens as it is the best lens I have for those spure of the moment child photos, 2nd most used would be my 85mm 1.8

Most used for casual and personal shots - Nikkor 24-120 VR.
Most used for professional - Sigma 105 2.8 Macro.

I own some other zooms and a 180 macro as well, but they are used less and less these days.

My 24-105 is on the camera by default. I take probably 90% of my shots with it. For animals I use the 100-400, but it's too heavy to hold, so it's virtually always on a tripod.

Canon EF500 f4...without a doubt!!

TomDart ( ) posted Fri, 10 October 2008 at 7:00 AM

I mostly use a Nikon 18-200 w/anti vibration.  Second is Sigma 50mm macro or 105 f/2.8...being a toss up there.

scoleman123 ( ) posted Fri, 10 October 2008 at 12:13 PM

The Canon 15mm f2.8 is on there a lot. The fantastic plastic (50mm f1.8) too.
