Subject: Applying Text to Models in Bryce

I stumbled into the world of Bryce because I love SF, and SF artwork.
I started using Bryce 5.5 for kicks, and got hooked on it.  It's now a new passion for me.

Well, anyway....

Is there a way to add text to a model or object?

I do a lot of spaceships, for instance, and want to put numbers and lettering on them. But I don't know how to do that in Bryce.

After my best knowledge you have to make your texture in some other program ..like photoshop ...and to get the best result you after that have to have a UV_mapping program ...that is if you want to scale your object in bryce and you want the texture to follow the resizing ...you can do it the hard way by rscaling the texture in Bryce though

I do my modeling in Rhino and do my render in Bryce..  If I want a detail on my models like letters and numbers I can go about it in two ways... 

one way I do it is, if my numbers are not to be too precise and the area on the model is not too difficult then I can make in a quick texture in my image editor with letters and or numbers.. I them bring them in Bryce and apply the texture to my object.. and struggle till with the transformation tools in the materials lab until I get my letters / numbers straight and on target...

However..  this is not the case most of the time... 

Second way... If I want to put precise details on specific locations on my models, I need to uvmap the model..  I use UVMapper Pro.  and make templates.  these templates I can bring them into my image editor and I apply my details.  This process allows me to put them In any area where I want them to appear on my model...  I then use these templates as the textures I use on my model in Brice..

If you do models with Bryce materials it won't be that easy for detailing...  It can be done but not without some processes...

Ah well...I'll just have to make do without such markings for now.

Bryce is a great program and can do amazing things...

some programs, like Wings, Hexagon, and Blender, can both model and do UVMapping. I'm more familiar with the Wings version of UVMapping. Just think of it as a primer coat and masking tape, and your texture as the actual paint...;)

If you want to check out Wings 3d, there are some UVMapping tutorials (look for a barrell tut, which is how I got started), and just play around with it. it takes some time to get up and running on UVMapping (I still have a ways to go), but even then, you can UVMap to your heart's content.

Stop by the UVMappper forum, and pick up UVMapper Classic for free, if you don't feel like modeling...

Spelling error on the Cardinal's part...it's a 3D font creator that is way useful in app that don't produce their own fonts in 3D like our mistress Bryce...the Dame with a Dude's name.. ...

 

Once in a while I look around,

My Pleasure...it's been around as long as Bryce I think, and is certainly handy...lotsa fun can also be had with the Spiralizer there also.. ...

OK, guys. This Elefont thingy just might do the trick. I dl'd it and started playing around with text DXFs. Looks promising.

I use two methods for text on the outside of ships etc:
1 - i make two versions of the panel texture in paintshop usually 500X500 pixels, e.g steel panels jpeg, and steel panels jpeg with some text overlaid like 'exhaust port' or 'stand clear' etc.
then using the materials lab apply steel panles to the whole model, then the steel panels with text to certain elements of the model.

method 2 - is to use the material all over and create a text jpeg which i apply as an abience channel in the materials editor. this is good for getting little windows on massive starships etc.

hope these two Bryce solutions work for you.

well, I just didn't take it to the 3rd dimension...;) Yeah, Elefont (Armanisoft, as I recall) does that.
To continue with my heresy, Wings 3d will also do 3d text. But it also does UVMapping...;)
