Personally I would want people to see what is possible using Bryce, but if it's moved to 'mixed medium' then nobody will know it's Bryce.
However, I think I'd rather see Bryce modelled scenes that include postwork remain in the Bryce gallery.
So Postwork IS OK?

What i'd like to see though, is those images that are Poser or DazStudio characters rendered in Bryce with no discernable Bryce modelling being moved out of there.... the Bryce gallery that is.
The scantily clad poser figure rendered in Bryce gets my goat up far more than any postwork issues, though I do understand the point.
There are times when I scratch my head as to why an artist chooses Bryce for JUST the render engine, imports a Poser figure, and makes a portrait style image. Poser has a fantastic Render engine and Lighting controls. However, One of the great things about Bryce is that it imports relatively easy, and we can all agree, once you're comfortable with an interface, the workflow and creativity steps up a notch. So it leaves me with a sense of knowing what a Great program this really is.
There may eventually be a challenge for Modeling in Bryce only. But that's a seperate Challenge in and of itself, because Bryce does have that potential as an OPTION.

Each day I check the gallery to cover Mod duties, here are some of the issues.
*(NO NAMES ARE TO BE USED HERE)
Images that have a Bryce based background, the rest of the image is comprised of Photos Cut & Pasted for the main subject matter.
Images Rendered in Bryce and have had so many Filters applied in a 2D editor, you can't tell it's Bryce anymore.
Images that are collages of Bryce renders, Abstracts, 2D editing with text and tubes, etc.
I'm not looking to hammer out every piece that has some postwork or presentation accent.
These are (as stated in many of your responses) the small enhancments that really shocase what Bryce can do.......and whatever it can't do

Before you jump to conclusions, I'm talking about someone importing the main theme of the scene, like a vehicle, or a SciFi city that was made in another app. I'm quite happy to see 'extras' that have been imported and I would still call this Bryce work in it's entirety, but not if the main theme has been imported.
Just to take things on a tangent slightly, do you think we as a community need to provide more tutorials? I know there time consuming and most of us would rather be Brycing, but it can only help the community evolve. Terry has a great one explaining how to build nearly a whole Bryce scene. If we could all make a pledge to try and add a new tutorial at least once a year then that can only benefit us all. Maybe we could have a request thread as a sticky. If someone likes an aspect of a certain image then we could try and provide a tutorial on the techniques involved.
I think full tutorails would work better as many members don't actually visit the forum on a regular basis to pick up all the threads.
I you thinks it's a good idea then I'd be happy to start a new topic.

No it doesn't, i'm talking about an character that has been created by Daz3D, or an object created in 3DS or OBJ. In fact anything that Bryce can already do with a little work. When I see the likes of TheBryster gradually building his train, and everything, or at least most has been modelled in Bryce, the use of external ready made objects, just doesn't constitute a 'Bryce' scene. Bryce is a very capable 3D modeller, and I think this should be learnt rather than just importing something ready made.

Great idea mate, and also, more WIP's with 'how it's achieved'.
I still feel that if the challenge rules state that imports or postwork is allowed that an image should be judged on whether or not it met the theme of the challenge,and not be precluded from voting because it includes models from another source.I agree with dhama's view on creating models from scratch in Bryce,and that Bryce is an excellent modelling app once you know how,but simply state this in the guidelines and there would be no need for further discussion.There are some amazing images that include outside models,and they should be judged on their artistic merit if the rules allow this,not blacklisted because the artist didn't take the time to attempt to create the model in Bryce...again,just my two cents worth!

Allow imports or not in challenges have historically been a decision of the previous challenge winner; same as the lighting thing in this current challenge was open to post worked lighting, if I interpreted it correctly. I don't bellyache if someone else interprets it another way. If I think the challenge image deviates too far from the stated intent of the challenge, I don't vote for it. Simple?
IMHO, greyscale import to terrain editor is an import from another application. 2d skies are an import. Filtered Bryce images that cannot be recognized as Bryce is mixed media.
It will be a very tough row to hoe for the mods to tell a member that an image that had an import rendered onto a background that has a 2d sky cannot be posted in Bryce gallery when, in fact Bryce has these features built into it.

Irregardless of what any temp rules say, if it's decided by the person creating the challenge and they say that one can import objects, and then the artist imports the main object of the scene instead of making it in Bryce, well then it just dosen't end up being a Bryce challenge anymore.
Small imported objects that just add to the scene are perfectly reasonable. But this should be stated clearly in the temp rules for each challenge.
If the person decides that any imported objects are acceptable including anything that will play a large part in the scene (the theme for instance), well that cannot then be a Bryce challenge.
I still think this is a grey (no pun intended) area. If someone imports a pre made finished object made by a third party into their scene thats up to them. I don't like it and It is very unlikely to get my vote. People doing their modelling in another app, whilst not ideal, I don't have a problem with. Bryce does have its limitations. (Sorry Bryster!) Is this not where the definition should be drawn.
