Subject: Modeling a Diamond? or a Diamond Model?

artposer ( ) posted Mon, 10 November 2008 at 4:54 AM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:08 AM

I am looking for a tutorial on how to model a daimond. I am using Hexagon 2.5  or know of a model I can purchase or better for free?

More shapes than you could ever use at the link.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Here's a tut on modeling a diamond in Maya.
The steps should be similar in most modeling software.....

.....and another using Cinema 4D

3D Lapidary also has some pages on making the models:
http://www.3dlapidary.com/HTML/Intro3D.htm
about half-way down, shows how I did it before I fully understood how to interpret genuine cutting instructions.
If you have cutting instructions to follow then look here:
http://www.3dlapidary.com/HTML/Facets.htm
The only difficulty with the latter method, is that the Boolean operations put the normals to the inside, (something I wasn't aware of at the time I wrote the page), so you will have to fix your normals at the end.
