I'm buying

new headset( with mimic and earphones) because my sister's baby bit them sometime ago and also now whenever i record, hissing and static sound is produced perhaps cause the thing is messed up. 

I'm also going to buy a new remote control for the tv and my mother wants a portable AM/FM radio.

And nooo i dont buy presents for all family members and relatives. i never do. My gift is usually love and happiness. that's it

I'm getting nothing...... as my favourite Veggie Tales movie 'the Toy that saved Christmas' states: Christmas isn't about getting stuff (or giving myself stuff), it's all about giving. I like to stay true to the true meaning of Christmas and not the coca cola santa claus distorted version if it.

It always makes me sad when threads like these pop up..... it's sad to see that we lost the notion of what Christmas is truly about..... the greatest gift ever given to mankind! It's a shame that so many people have left (Jesus) Christ out of the CHRISTmas.

A new 500 GB external hard drive (to replace 2 that crashed within 2 weeks of each other)

I'd like to be buying myself a copy of Vue 7i but somehow I don't think it's going to happen.
(I don't celebrate Christmas either but I may well celebrate the midwinter festival again this year which is what it's based on)

Nothing for me and I dont know if I am celebrating it this year.. I live in Orlando, Fl. and I am not sure if you are familiar with the Casey Anthony case about the missing 2 yr old...Caley..How could a mother do that to her child? That is the true face of evil.. I know that my post here are some what questionable so I am not pointing a finger but , Lately how the world is getting along and all the greed that is happening here in the US really saddens me..Not trying to depress anyone but I just want to send out a big hug here to all of my friends at Renderosity...Heck its all in fun.

I'm not buying my Christmas gift until February or March!  My gift to me is going to be a brand new queen size bed and bedroom set. I would like to get it sooner, but  need to save up for it.

After 26 years of sleeping on a water bed I'm finally at the point where I want a regular bed. Plus my dresser is an old hand-me-down and the bottoms fall out of the drawers and the drawers fall in on each other. So I'm ready for a matched bedroom suite :)

I went from a water bed to a regular one a few years ago.. only thing I miss was having a nice warm bed on cold winter nights.

When my mom passed away, we made sure to keep her expensive bedroom set from the 60's.. ;)

That's how I finmally managed to get a matching set!

Yeah! I love my water bed. It's a 4 poster oak frame with drawers.  But I won't miss not being able to rearrange my furniture, or having to sleep on the couch the night before moving, or waking up soaking web because the mattress sprung a leak.  The current mattress is 12 years old, which is a couple years beyond it's normal life expectancy. I was planning on getting a new mattress, but decided that since I'm moving before the spring, that I want to just go with a regular bed instead of draining it and refilling it and then going through it all again at the new place.  Draining and moving one is a real PITA!  And I'm sure my brother won't miss me asking him to come help me,  LOL

Acadia! Traitor! g I'm keeping the waterbed, but the oven is done for, and the washing machine is making a funny noise. Joy, joy, joy. Appliances I hate to use, and hate cleaning even more. yuck. Guess it's better than socks.

And finish painting behind it. One things fer sure, you don't just move 'em on a whim. On the other hand I didn't have to re-arrange the bedroom when she took a notion to change something. But other than the kids we sorta out grew the mindless material goods trip for ourselves and the landfill is less full for it. If we need it, we'll get it when we need it. We were/are real bad about guessing  what the other wanted so we quit going into debt over it. A car made in this century would be cool, think I'll wait for a "bankruptcy" sale.....and pay cash.......

The life expectancy is the warranty period. The mattress was under warranty for 10 years.  After 10 years the vinyl tends to wear thin and seams tend to separate.

I've had problems with the corner seams splitting.  Oddly enough my cats while allowed on the water bed, have never punctured it with their claws.

This is the third mattress that I've had. The first was a free flow. The second was top of the line waveless. That mattress was punctured badly by some movers in 1996 when they didn't box it and instead just sat it on the wheel well inside the truck. Of course it slipped off and got caught on all kinds of spiky things and ripped in a couple dozen places.  It was only 2 years old, so I forced them to replace it (they didn't want to). I got another equivalent.  But I'm worried about that well patched corner seam.

I'll chuck the mattress and sell the frame. It's solid oak so I'll be able to get at least $100.00 for the frame itself.  Someone could use it as a regular bed by putting a mattress inside it instead of a bladder.  I personally want a normal bed that I can move around.

Just never had a problem with our semi-waveless. Lucky I guess. We did save the wood, it was too good to trash. Might use it for something someday if I can find a saw. Never thought of just selling the frame but there was no where to store it and when she made up her mind to ditch it there was no stopping her. Still it took a day to "change over". And we moved twice, that alone is reason enuff for box springs.

A five day trip to Paris. Cheap motel, cheap food, but it is Paris.

Like Aeikima, I'll be celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, I'll probably buy myself a new outfit to wear at Christmas Mass! :)

Not sure I'll be able to afford it this year, the cat isn't well & the vets bill is already £650+ with another round of xrays & tests coming today, looks like he'll be costing us at the very least £1000 & at the end of it we might have to have him put to sleep anyway. Pets! who'd have them? love him to bits though!

I remember a fella in the 70s who wanted one of those 'Chevy Van' make-out pads on wheels.He put a waterbed in the bad (against the advice of the outfitter). Did fine until he made a turn at high speed. A sizeable fraction of a ton of water continued straight, while his van proceeded to precess all over the intersection...;)

The only thing I'm buying myself is some cider to make mulled cider for  Joe and I on Christmas Eve.  "Santa" has already figured out what Brodie's getting, and it's already wrapped, lol, so all that needs to happen is it needs to get put out.   Books, clothes, and art supplies are REALLY easy to wrap ;)

If you use the hard drive constantly like I did with mine the power supply can burn out really quickly.

When I taught basic computer building in the local Vocational School several years ago, I brought in an abacus to show them, they thought I was joking till I showed how easy and fast it worked.

What am I buying myself this year for Christmas, a Happy wife! Just purchased the wife a new laptop.

I usually don't buy myself anything for Christmas due to I over spend on everyone else and buy myself  something for my birthday (which was Friday if you have not heard or wish to buy me something :rolleyes: ).

it doesn't matter if one buys others gifts or if one buys oneself gifts: the main point is to
buy stuff so that the various merchants can stay in business.  hence one doesn't even
need to believe in xmas, hannukah, kwanza et al.  just buy something, secure in the
knowledge that if enuff of us do that, the recession will be over before ya know it.

p.s. I would buy poser 8 for xmas, assuming the testers finish sledge-hammering it
into shape by then.  but they've been dutifully silent as churchmice on the subject.

I'm getting nothing for Christmas...guess I was a bad girl. :) No one has enough cash to spend except for the children. As for Santa, I never taught my children that he was the one who gave gifts at Christmas but told thenm to respect other people's wish to teach their kids about it. My daughter doesn't teach her kids the Santa bit either. They are taught what Christmas really means. Well, with the sales here and my other stores I managed to get a gift each for my grand-daughters, daughter, son-in-law, sister and mother. And still have enough left for a dinner on Christmas day.

I had a plastic one of those when I was a kid! :)  I don't know why someone thought a kid would like one but, I had one.

I've been trying to learn to use a slide-rule as well.  It's much faster for some things and pretty darn accurate.  But, I just don't use it enough to be fast with it.

@ the OP - I normally don't by myself anything for Christmas.  But, the timing this year is right about the time I need to be getting a new computer.  So, maybe I'll put a bow on it and call it my Christmas Present to Me.

Yes. Which is why I keep after you to not only save to the hard drive, but also burn the files to CD or DVD.  An external hard drive is just a hard drive that is sitting outside of your computer tower.  It can crash just as easily as the one inside your computer.

I currently have 1 external hard drive. I want to get a second one that I can mirror the files onto. But I also burn my files to DVD so that in the event of a hard drive crash, I still have the files on DVD.

One reason an external HD will crash is overheating.
Sometimes if you turn them off and disconnect for a bit, they will work again.
If not you can get your files back with file scavenger or similar program.

Mine crashed and all I could see was it had reformatted to RAW (whatever that is) but I used a file scavenger like program and got everything back.
Of course you need a big drive to save it back to.
Then I reformated to FAT again and it works okay.

BUt I now backup important a
stuff to CD ubtil I get a DVD burner.

Hey don't get all down because some people don't "get" Christmas. There are some of us who buy goodies, but still set a place for Jesus at Christmas Eve dinner, go to midnight mass, and enjoy a family-only day with no cell phones allowed.

Nevertheless, on behalf of my very non-technical family, I purchased (and they have wrapped) for me a brand new Nikon D90 SLR, with 18-105 VR zoom lens, and a 70-300 VR zoom lens.

Expect to see me posting some cool new shaders based on textures photographed by me.

That skit was totally me. I remember getting my first TI calculator - it was all I wanted for Christmas when I was 14.

I told that story to my kids a couple weeks ago. They just rolled there eyes and called me a mega-nerd for the umpteenth time.

Me? I just wanted my dad's $500 TI calculator in the leather case... course that was 1975 or such...

*A slide rule! I had forgotten about that, I still have my old one I used on high school, but I'm afraid I don't know how to use it anymore.

We're  celebrating Christmas in Holland, but we don't have a Santa Claus  like you have in America. We have Sint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) which is our big children giveaway party but that is on the fifth of december. The big shopping malls and warehouses are trying to push Santa Claus here in Holland as well, but our own folklore seems to be stronger than the commerce.
Personally I  agree with Ailkema that Christmas is a christian holiday, but it has its pagan backgrounds, like the christmas tree.

I think I buy myself a good book for christmas, and for my wife and daughters, to spent the cold,dark evenings.

Well, If the money I'm expecting comes in on time, I'm going to be totally selfish, because I've had a really rough year.  I'm going to grab me some DVDs I've been wanting, a few games for my PS3 and treat myself to a steak dinner...after I wipe a few debts out first.  I may be crazy, but, I'm not insane!!  hahaha :b_grin:

• I've been looking at laptops, and figured if I found one with adequate specs for $550 or less, I'd think real hard on it.  Yesterday I found a Toshiba with Intel dual processor, 2 Gig ram, 160 Gig HD for only $399.  Enough left over for a copy of Roxio creator 2009 & another external HD for backups. 
  Only thing I don't really like, is it comes with Vista preinstalled, but if I can't make Vista do everything I need, I can always UpDate it to XP (I have 3 or 4 extra XP licenses from computers I've scrapped).
  [. . . I've resisted putting Vista on any of my computers, based on many many reports of software incompatibility and my personal dislike for MicroSoft's arrogant, condescending, and paternalistic policy of taking control of what goes on in  PC's away from the end user, and giving it to obscure and disruptive policies programmed in by their battalions of programming committees with mutually antagonistic or just incompatible priorities (Whew! - run-on sentence, anyone?).  This will give me a chance to get some first-hand experience with it's usability without putting anything important at risk.]

I'm finally at the point in my life where I don't need anything.  I'm going to treat myself to a new DVD player for my bedroom because mine just died last night (after getting lots of use for the past five years).  However, the best present that I will receive for Christmas this year (which may not arrive until the week after) is twin grandchildren!  Keegan and Brigid will be arriving sometime within the next two weeks.

I'm not particularly religious and I'm not sure whether I believe or not. But one of the best Christmas' that I spent was with my BFF and her 2 kids.

Her and I decided that we were going to make gifts for each other instead of buying them, and when they came over for Christmas dinner I had a birthday cake for dessert. The kids didn't understand why we had "birthday" cake until I explained to them that it was "Baby Jesus' " birthday that was being celebrated, so what would be more appropriate for dessert than a birthday cake for him.  They were thrilled and talked about it for months afterwards. Now it's become a tradition in their family to have a birthday cake with "Happy Birthday Jesus" on it.

I agree.  While I may attach certain personal, religious connotations to "Christmas" I would always say that the spirit is one of good will towards all and sharing a common experience of that together regardless of any other significance, or lack of it, someone may personally attach to it.

We can all celebrate it together no matter what our religious beliefs or lack of same.  Everyone knows what "Good Will Towards Their Fellow Human Beings" means, I hope.
