Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 25 9:50 pm)
Quote - Is hair loaded from the hair folder a prop?
Yes.
Quote - Could the hair be named different than what the magnets expect, so that's why they have no affect?
This a possiblity.
Another is that the hair has Bend turned off, which stops magnets from having an affect.
If your using one of Netherworks Studio's conversion kits, there is usually one set of magents for Prop hair and another for Figure hair (and different processes for using them).
Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't have that hair, or the M4 kit.
Thanks. I am using one of the Netherworks conversion kits. I'll check to see if bends are off and that I'm using the right set of magnets.
I was also wondering...
I used the scale and trans dials to adjust this hair and then created a fit to morph using the python script. This creates a morph that is dialed to one and you can't change it. Why? This hair when I reload it works in Poser, but when I use it in DS, it's like I never adjusted it. Also this morph shows as an empty range and you can't change it. If I could dial this to 1 maybe the hair would work ok. If you save a pose to the library, does it not save trans and scale adjustments? And if the pose works in Poser, then why not in DS?
Thanks again.
I don't know if this will help you, because I only used the translation & scaling dials to (sorta) fit the hair to V4.2 for quick testing.
AnyHOO, I got magnets to work with this hair; I selected billyhawk hair, created a magnet, and did a quick test. Moving the magnet made the hair definitely change...
My tests mostly involved moving the magnet in extreme ways, just to see if it would work.
I came up with a few funny atrocities -- here's one of 'em (excuse the lack of neck).
Maybe the problem is that the hair has a default fit for David but there are only magnets to go from Mike1,2,3 to Mike 4.
I will try the magnet thing like you did just for my own amusement and maybe to learn. But I found that Neftis did a hairfit for this so I can just use it.
I did try the magnets on the DAZ wedge hair because I could go from Mike 3 to Mike 4. It worked fine. Created a fit morph and looks good in poser, but when I go to Daz Studio, the hair loads as if it was never adjusted. Same pose and everything. The hair fit morph I created is there but it says it's an empty range in DS. Why would that be?

I must admit, the DS issue is far beyond my knowledge. The fact that you have successfully created working magnets for hair in Poser (that aren't working in DS) -- could be due to how you're saving the morphs, OR how DS reads them.
(Bear with me on my 'how you're saving' guess... Since I have frequently run into problems when saving one of my own created poses or magnets, I'm considering my own weaknesses in my conjecture).
I would consider creating a thread in the Daz Studio forum here. Somebody here who uses DS has to know why your working Poser morph isn't working in DS! ( 5 dollars says Richard Haseltine comes up with the solution!)
I may have stumbled on why the morphs don't work in Daz Studio. Or I may not have. I'm not sure. I noticed that for the hair I converted that there is a pmd file as well as the hr2 and the png. I did a quick search for pmd files and I read that morphs are stored in them. Maybe DS can't read the pmd file. I used the python script for creating the morph, so maybe that has something to do with why the pmd file is created. Is there a way to create the morph and just have it saved into the hr2 file? Since there are 7 or 10 magnets, if you save the morphs manually, do you have to create a morph target for each magnet? Or will it make a single morph target out of all the magnets in the scene?

Do you mean that when you saved the scene, there was also a pmd file in the same folder as your saved scene? Or is there a pmd file elsewhere?
The reason I'm asking: the only times I ever ended up with pmd files was when I had the external binary morph targets checked in Poser's preferences. I unchecked that (and never used it since) after discovering terrible results when importing my poser scenes to Vue.
For now, see if you have external binary morphs enabled in Poser. If so, uncheck that option (in the Menu go to "Edit", "General Preferences", OR press "Ctrl' +the letter "K").
In the window that opens up, hit the "Misc." tab, and uncheck "Use external binary morph targets". Save your scene again (preferably with a new name, just to be safe).... and then see if you can use your morphs in DS.
Quote - I used the python script for creating the morph, so maybe that has something to do with why the pmd file is created.
I'm no expert, lol... BUT... as far as I know, the pmd file is ONLY created in poser if you have the option for external binary morph targets checked in the "Misc." tab of Poser's preferences. The python script made for creating a morph would not be creating the pmd files.

I'm deficient in the area of saving the various poser file types...
But I'm 99.9% sure that the external morph targets preference (.pmd files) was responsible for your issue. Please try the above suggestion and let us know what happens! If I can't help you, somebody out there can. : )

I am not well-versed in how DS handles Poser imports... I have created multiple magnets for single figures, props, etc., and they all saved with the magnet properties in tact. As for how DS handles magnets -- if I recall correctly, DS should be able to read all the Poser-created magnets in your file. The trick, as I remember, is saving it under the appropriate category (that is, if it's a "hair file", save it as a hair file, or if it's a "figure", save it as a figure), etc.
Please let us know how this goes for you. If no one in this forum provides the answer, I am absolutely positive that someone in the DS forum here (or at Daz's forum) will be able to help you. I have seen a plethora of DS users at Daz who not only use both DS & poser, but know what they're talking about! :P
Thanks, Angelsinger. I turned off the setting in preferences and re-did the hair using the magnet sets and saved a pose. When I load the hair in Daz Studio, it now fits the character the same as it does in Poser. It still shows the morph with an empty range in DS. But there is no error and it loads correctly, so maybe that's just how it works. Maybe it's an empty range because you aren't suppose to adjust it since it's suppose to fit with the setting it has.

I bought that hair conversion system for Mike 4. When I add certain hairs to the scene and then add the magnets they have no affect. Why? Is hair loaded from the hair folder a prop? There doesn't appear to be any body parts. (BillyHawk hair is one example.) Could the hair be named different than what the magnets expect, so that's why they have no affect? And if there are no body parts, how do the magnets know which areas to affect? (there are magnets for the sides, back, top, etc. Should I just add the entire hair to all the magnet sets since there are no body parts?
Thanks.
