Vista Ultimate (dunno about any other versions), I just turn on "View --Extra Large (or Large) Icons", and see whats in folders that way ;)
I always save a pic of an item in its folder when I can, and it's web page if possible.

Vue of course, I use it's library and have it pointed to my Textures folder for those too.
I have a big notepad I write stuff down in when working out what I want a scene ot be, and assets ot use.

Under windows, I use XnView. Free, lightweight and simple
Under MacOS, my favorite is Leap with its advanced search features.
I forgot all about XnView. I used to use it for TGA texture management in Second Life.

I also use Irfy, (as I lovingly call it). :P
I open any image, hit the "T" key and BAM! All the images that are in the same folder as that image are displayed in Irfy's Thumbnail Viewer. The "thumbnail" size I set as default is pretty large, so technically, my images aren't displayed as "thumbnails". :P
One of the coolest things about Irfy's thumbnail viewer is that its left panel displays your folder hierarchy; so you can pick any folder in your computer from there and view all the images in that directory by expanding it. : )

I have noticed that one of the challenges of 3D art is that you spend a lot of time looking through 3D art assets (models, textures, tec) and determining what you can use or what you can modify in order to get to the look you are looking for. In other words, you do a signiificant amount browsing for images or 3D models as you try to envision a scene. The art assets you have often influence the scene you build as much or more than the original artistic inspiration.
This leads to the general question I have for everyone. What are you using as your content image browser and how well does it work?
I am using iMatch from PhotoTools which has some nice features, but, the time it takes to load up is a little concerting. Also, the amount of time spent categorizing can get tediuous.
