For OEM stuff ... CAUTION: Download File Size is 918.67 MB - That's almost 1 GB !!! :scared:

Can this be true or is it questionable?

Personally, I wouldn't trust a download purchase from anyone but the original company.

They don't even have an address or phone number on their web site. Does that make you trust them with your credit card number?

Once you try to check out, it becomes obvious that it's just pirated software:

Quote - By buying software you fully agree to and understand our definition of OEM Software.

The OEM Software:

Is downloadable software;
May comes with:

  • Additional (included with the package) serial code generators, or
  • Additional EXE file substitues (included with the package), or
  • No additional tools; the software is simply installed and run.

You fully agree to these terms and understand that OEM Software may not be liable for developers' support, updates, etc. The OEM software is a product that may be considered unlicensed by the developers.

Ya take your choice but thier are some sites like that, ae genuine, you just take your chances.

gagnonrich ( ) posted Tue, 03 February 2009 at 8:50 AM

I'm not aware of any 3rd party sites, offering downloads, that are legitimate. 3rd party sites, selling boxed editions or OEM editions, will usually undersell the publisher and sometimes dump old software editions at extremely low prices (years ago, I picked up full versions of boxed CorelDraw 8 for $20 when version 10 was out--the included clipart disks alone made it worth the price).

A query to Smith-Micro will determine if it's a valid reseller. Considering that PoserPro is the high end market and most current version of Poser, it's not going to be offered in an OEM bundle or sold at a close-out price.

Not saying you should buy this software.  But if you are worried about someone ripping
off your credit card number on a particular purchase, what you can do is buy a Visa
gift card for that amount.  It works just like a regular credit card, but is only worth
a specific amount of money.  Then if someone tries to charge more to it, it won't
work because the limit has already been exceded.  So if you do get ripped off,
it is only for the amount of money the card is worth.  And it can't be reloaded,
so when you are done with the card, you just throw it away.

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Tue, 03 February 2009 at 9:45 AM

it's a scam.

soon as you see

a: the cost. $36 from a place thats not the publisher? reg flag.

b:"Additional (included with the package) serial code generators" = ***Keygen *** red flag.

Poser has never been available as OEM or other special packaging. If it does not have a Box, Manual, and Disk or it is not downloaded from one of the few authorized Resellers outside of Smith Micro's official stores if Downloaded (you can contact Smith Micro to find out before you buy) then you can bet it is a Pirated Copy.

You can report sites such as this to Smith Micro Support and it will be passed on to the appropriate Staff.

Be very wary of "OEM" sites. They can look so legit and still be scam artists and/or warez kitties. I ran across one a few months back that seemed to check out okay -- until I wandered a few pages further and found he was also selling Daz models as "OEM". Dead giveaway the dude wasn't level. I reported him to abuse@daz but he's probably still around, just using another .ru or .cz domain and changing names so he don't get caught.

He means how to avoid them - I hope - rather than how to perpetrate them. That would be a Bad Thing. :)

Just a thought - I've been lumbered with $10,000,000 (TEN MILLION DOLLARS) in this dead guy's bank account. Could you help me to get it out of the country before our oppressive regime finds out? I'll give you a generous cut. Just send me your bank details.

Actually, you know.. that's not such a bad idea when you think about it.

First of all, there's piracy.  Poser is rampant with it.  There are any number of servers/organizations located in hard-to-litigate countries that are either hosting files, providing peer-to-peer information or providing links to where the files have been uploaded.  There are even sites that seem legitimate and seem to be primarily hosting architectural type objects but, then you come across a repackaged mesh that was in an artist's product on Renderosity or any of the other merchant sites.  As a matter of fact, when I first was interested in Poser I naturally started going down the search engines for freebies and stumbled across many of these sites myself.  It didn't take long to figure out what was up.  Since I've been around for a year or so, identifying individual products is much easier and even if I don't buy the product, I can generally recognize it or its probable mesh if I see a good pic of it somewhere it isn't supposed to be.

These sites and organizations are committing theft.  They're stealing products whos creators worked very hard to produce.  They're stealing revenue from the merchant sites as well or, at the very least, promoting both activities.  It's not only illegal, it's just plain wrong.

But, now and again, I see someone new to Poser post a link to a scam site either informing people of their "great new freebie motherload find!" or asking whether or not it is legitimate.   They don't know any better.. nobody is actually telling them "How" to know better.

Then, there's the sites that seem to want to package malware in these products or other ones related to Poser.  Why?  Because, to be honest, most Poser users aren't comp-tech-internet-savvy people.  They know how to surf but not how to protect themselves and, they get bitten..  Not many people are very aware of the dangers of downloading.  After all, Poser users are addicted to downloads and that makes them natural targets for malware predators.

So, it's out there.. Not a lot of people know how to recognize it.. Not a lot of people understand the damage piracy does to everyone - creator, customer and merchant combined.  Not a lot of people realize the personal risk they take when downloading and installing material from an unknown site.  Why not a tutorial on the what's, where's and how's of avoiding piracy, malware and its impact on the Poser community?

geep ( ) posted Wed, 04 February 2009 at 12:54 PM

There's only one (or two) problem(s) with that.

  1. You can't legislate morality. e.g., "Thou shalt not steal."
(but if someone does not "believe" then that's a moot point anyway)

= and =

  1. Some people will (almost) always steal anything that they can and there will (almost) always be someone else there and willing to provide it.
