GUYS! Damn, try to give the poor fellow an answer of some kind!
Send in the clowns for real today!

If M4 is, say six foot and some inches, you'd have to place NearMe mext to him and scale her until her head is about the same size.  All human heads are about (+/- 5-7%) the same size and make a good size comparison point. I don't have NearMe, so I can't do it for you, but being an anime character, she probably NOT built to poser standard sizes. Anime characters sometimes have larger heads and such.

(Example:Maybe, anime male from Akatora is 110% taller than he should be, making him seven feet and some inches tall next to normal poser figures. Reduce his skull to the same as others, and he's just a real thin 6 foot, 5 inches tall.)

You other dummies...do I have to spell it out for you? :)

OK, if you load M4 and Near Me in Poser where does the top of Near Me's head come in relation to M4?

Simple one word answers please :) for example, shoulder, nipple, chin, etc...

What is your reason for asking? That might get more lucrative responses.

Based just be looking at proportions, Nearme's head is 4 times as large and M4s in comparison. assuming you scale her to match his head size, she'll be half as tall as M4 is, or less.

LukeA ( ) posted Thu, 26 February 2009 at 3:37 PM

Ok all my smiley faces must have been ignored -  :) :) ;)

I feel the question has been stated as clear and simple as possible - when they are standing next to each other in their default scale, where does Near Me's head come in relation to M4? I don't need to know scale but where the top of NM head is in relation to M4.

Here is another question. If I build a chair for Near Me to sit in, do I build for her at her default scale? I assume yes. If I do then how big she is in relation to M4 at their default sizes will tell me. All I need to know is how tall she is.

Well, I suppose I have a need for attention, and that makes me want to jump in where I think I can contribute some humor, especially when I don't have any facts available.

The irrational urge I have is to be funny, not obscene. I'm sure I don't always succeed, but aside from being interested in Poser related stuff, I also like to socialize here much as I would at a large public gathering, going from conversation to conversation, and spreading a little fun, in the spirit that I spied when I got here.

No harm intended, I promise, and I do apologize for not being able to post anything more constructive. 😄

I didn't read the entire post, but the counting of polys in that case would include the hidden areas where the polys may have been deleted (like in game development of the past) so this chair could be about 20 polys less from this angle and you wouldn't know it.

Well, the orthographic cameras are the only ones you can use to line things up, so it's not all that mysterious. I bet a lot of people know this - just perhaps without knowing they knew ;)

I use front, left and top cameras a lot myself so I'm kinda used to them. (left and not right because with most lightsets, right tends to be in shadow)

Nearme would actually be a tad shorter.. she has platform shoes on, and M4 is slightly below the ground line.

More to the point, why would this info be needed? If you are developing something for nearme, you kinda need to have that figure.

If you're making a chair, how would her total height be at all relevent?

You need to know the height of her knee.

Yabut he could still see where her knee is compared to Mike's leg on the comparison pic, right? And then sorta kinda use Mike as the measuring rod.

And I may be daft and my humorous bone may be broken, but I don't get the" if you load this and that with the head the same size as..."

Clearly what is needed is how they load from the Character palette. Or do everyone but me routinelly scale figures up and down to get their heads of equal size?

Quote -  Yabut he could still see where her knee is compared to Mike's leg on the comparison pic, right? And then sorta kinda use Mike as the measuring rod.

But he didn't ask for a picture. I agree that if he'd asked for a side-by-side render, he'd be able to compare leg height.

He said this:

"How tall is Near Me in relation to say M4? "

"You other dummies...do I have to spell it out for you? :)

OK, if you load M4 and Near Me in Poser where does the top of Near Me's head come in relation to M4?"

See that? WHERE DOES THE TOP OF NEAR ME'S HEAD COME.

My point is, because these figures do not have the same proportions, that information is useless in producing a chair. Near Me's head is a much larger proportion of her overall height. So asking where the top of her hand lands on M4 is not going to tell you how high the chair should be when she sits.

Some cartoon figures have heads that are fully 1/2 their entire height. In such cases, the futility of the question would be obvious. But here it is more subtle.

If you were to judge how big to make a chair based solely on informatiion about her total height, you would produce a chair that is too large.

See? That is not all you need to know. You also need to know what fraction of her height is represented by her bent knee.

Note also the confusion cause by the M4?  "Why do you need to know this?"

I just think requests for information should state what we call in product development the "Business Requirement". The request should not jump to a specific deliverable, since the requestor may not actually be the best to judge how to deliver on the requirement.

The business requirement in this case was "I need to know how high a chair seat should be for Near Me".

The stated requirement was "I need to know how tall Near Me is against M4". This is often what happens when the business user plays engineer in product development. The business user thinks there is a particular way to go about this, and asks for the pieces that accomplish the goal in that particular way. The engineers happen to know a more straightforward way, but since nobody tells them what the actual goal or requirement is, they can't bring it up.

M4? Huh? That threw everybody off. It seems odd, unless you followed the (hidden) thoughts of the requestor. Why go through this roundabout and flawed question (since it doesn't give you enough data to run through a chain of calculations)? A simple, direct question for the requirement information would have been much more fruitful.

That's the point I'm trying to make. If there is information you want, ask for the information. Do not ask for other "data" and try to expect your readers to know how you're going to use the data to produce your desired information. They will look at you funny, especially when it is finally revealed that the path you were on wasn't going to get you the information anyway.

I know exactly what you mean, it happens to me all the time in software development. I had somebody waste an hour of my time the other day because he went to a two hour meeting to try to streamline the development process on a project. I told him why it wouldn't work, and gave him a solution that would work. Then I had to wait for him to get the new idea approved. If they'd just asked me in the first place and told me what they were trying to do... sigh

However after 24 years in the biz (mumbles to self... Geez, am I that old?) I've come to recognize that sometimes you just gotta keep digging until the right answer comes up. I try to answer the questions asked, then always pose back the question, "Now, what are you ultimately trying to accomplish here?" which works wonders. 😄
