**Ok, so on with the next challenge!
Here's what Quest posted about his ideas for it. Please feel free to post any questions you might have here. The Challenge Entry page will be up shortly.
**
**Good luck to you all.

From Quest.....

For our next challenge I was originally thinking about paying homage to Chesley Bonestell one
of the first artists to depict space exploration. You can read about him here:

and see some of his work here:

[ http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=Chesley+Bonestell&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=x9WtSb3lLYGCtwev6oGEBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title&ei=2dWtSZ7ZHZDWnQeLotiNBg&gbv=2](http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=Chesley+Bonestell&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=x9WtSb3lLYGCtwev6oGEBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title&ei=2dWtSZ7ZHZDWnQeLotiNBg&gbv=2)

But I didn’t want to be limited just to outer space art so I’m thinking a combination space art and sci-fi/fantasy futuristic landscape/cityscape art, lots of room to play around with here.

As for rules…yuk! Absolutely no restrictions on the software here. Everything goes! All that Bryce can muster and then some. Ultimately, the final render must be done in Bryce. It can be postworked but all postwork must be noted specifically. You can import models and textures from outside programs but you must specify the sources. If the sources come from artists other than yourself, they must be given credit. In essence, you must explain how the image was created.

To show you what I mean and also to inspire view these images:

[ http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=sci+fi+landscape+&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Zw-vSbm2OdLjtgfF3tn9BQ&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1&ei=8w-vSarnLNvFmQfyxJX5BQ&gbv=2](http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS291US291&q=sci+fi+landscape+&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=Zw-vSbm2OdLjtgfF3tn9BQ&oi=property_suggestions&resnum=0&ct=property-revision&cd=1&ei=8w-vSarnLNvFmQfyxJX5BQ&gbv=2)

I hope I covered all. If I didn’t, I’m sure someone will remind me. Good luck to all and have fun!

**
Quest also posted this.......

**Anyway, here's another web site gallery which contains some very talented artists in this genre which might be helpful or inspiring. Have a look see thru the galleries. Please enjoy!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that when you get down to the "spacejetter's" link, there you will find tutorials and models geared towards Bryce.

OMG! one of my favourite old books about space has imagery from Chesley Bonestell in it! :D Its quite funny to read that book now, all the stuff thats in there and used to be cutting edge, some of it is now proven to be wrong, etc.  Theres even a concept in it proposing a flying saucer design :D
good memories ^_^

@ Dhama Hey thats not fair! Right I've been busy doing my exhibition stuff for the last couple of months, and haven't done anything new for a while. So I'm relishing getting stuck into this challenge.

This sounds like a very fun subject for the challenge, especially the way Quest stipulated it!

Lown ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 4:15 AM

OK guys here we go!!!! I want to see entries from Orbital, Vorban, Rj001, 1971s, Prestoud, Whiskey Sierra, BamBam 131, Ruud, Theseus88bc, Grafikeer, Geirla, Waldodessa, NefariousDro, Nanotecht, Duo, Thunderwolf, Keymilan, Pitoutu etc etc... If this is a scifi/space challenge all the scifi heads HAVE TO enter (real life permitting of course!!). Not trying to exclude anyone or forget anyone, of course everyone should enter challenges, push yourselves!! Have fun and keep creating!

dhama ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 10:54 AM

Oh.. does that mean I can't then...

orbital ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 10:59 AM

Didn't think you wanted to enter anymore anyway?

LOL…Dhama, everyone is welcomed to take part in the challenge including you. You are no different than anyone else. Lown, if you can get even half of those artists involved this would be one hell of a challenge. I can think of quite a few others as well. It will certainly raise the competition and surely get the creative juices flowing. Shooooo…maybe I can even sell tickets!

dhama ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 2:48 PM · edited Wed, 11 March 2009 at 2:49 PM

Well if we get as class acts as those in this thread, then it would be worth competing.

orbital ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 3:43 PM

I think maybe some of those you mentioned Lown need a IM to give them a heads up. Maybe they don't come in here that often.

OK but let's not discourage those not so well versed in Bryce. We need to be helping the new guys as well.

Help comes in many forms. Sometimes after the challenge is over too, like when the winner is kind enough to share some of their techniques as was the case with Quest. I'm looking forward to what may come of this challenge.

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 11 March 2009 at 6:59 PM

This is why I stipulated that the artist "...must explain how the image was created". That way we can all learn from each other. The goal here is to create something imaginative, to think outside the box away from everyday commonality. To get those creative juices going. We mustn’t think of this as a contest to win for the sake of winning but as a challenge. To push ourselves to try something new and different even if we feel we won’t get to first place with it. But wouldn’t you be pleasantly surprised if you did?

grafikeer ( ) posted Thu, 12 March 2009 at 12:48 AM

I'm in...sounds like a great challenge, and I would hope all the other sci-fi'ers would jump on board too!

Well good Dhama because if you weren’t surprised then it wouldn’t be much of a challenge…would it? I’ve not tried an image in this genre, not really. This would be a first for me. I have ideas going around in my head but nothing solid yet, whereas the situation may be different with another artist. Perhaps they have disk loads put away of props they’ve developed through the years that are just begging to be used. So yes, I would be pleasantly surprised if I even made it to the top three or even honorable mention. But it would get my feet wet and perhaps even be encouraged to further develope. This, I feel, is the point of the challenge.

dhama ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 6:28 PM

Well, I have something ready for upload now. It's new for me too, but it's the best I can come up with.

Quest ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 6:49 PM · edited Sun, 15 March 2009 at 7:01 PM

Dhama, we have two full months for the challenge. You have plenty of time to develope or even change your entre. The entre page isn't even up yet! Give yourself some time. Most artists have to look long and hard before they can even post it because we all know there is always room for improvement. Many of us have past images which when we look at them later we often say to ourselves: I should have done this and tried that. Creating art should be pleasurable and relaxing, this of course unless you're in the business of art where time is imperative. But we have two full months. How many times can one change their mind in two months? But this is entirely up to you.

dhama ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 6:54 PM

Why change my mind on what i've done, it's certainly the best I'm gonna get it. 😉

Quest ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 6:56 PM

LOL...okay...but don't forget, we have two full months!

50parsecs ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 12:18 AM

Well, I have to say this topic has filled my head with all kinds of ideas, I just have to try to pick out the best one for my abilities, at this point. At least, as you say, we have the better part of two months. That would even give me, with my low record for output, a chance to try out several ideas and renders. Great topic Quest.

dhama ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 2:58 AM

Actually, it's more like 1 and a half months now lol.

Cyba_Storm ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 8:32 AM

I need a bit of clarification. The RULES say importing models is allowed. If I built a model in Wings could I import that? Imports just seem odd in a BRYCE challenge.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 8:37 AM

Cyba, if imports are allowed that means your Wings model is allowed too. Generally "imports allowed" means that models made in different applications may be used in your entry as long as the final render is done in bryce.

Quest ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 9:42 AM

Cyber-Storm, the importing of mesh objects has always been a staple of Bryce. The Bryce application provides for such importations so there’s absolutely nothing odd about it. Poser people do it all the time.

Yes, as Rayraz says, any model built in any program can be brought in and be made part of the image and that includes Wings 3D. Your final image must be rendered in Bryce. Any retouching or added effects (post-work) done on the final Bryce image using outside image editors are also allowed. For the purposes of group enlightenment, the artist must account for all image manipulations. This includes what applications other than Bryce were used to create the image and how it was incorporated into the image. If you are using models created by another artist/model builder, credit must be given to that person/persons or commercial establishments.

I understand importing models, it is just with Bryces ability to create it's own, having a challenge where BRYCE is little more than the render engine seems a waste of time. With post work also allowed it may as well be a mixed media challenge.

orbital ( ) posted Tue, 17 March 2009 at 1:48 AM

Please don't start this arguement again it's like the hot20 all over again.
I'd say do your stuff in Bryce and you will get more recognition for doing so.

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 17 March 2009 at 2:26 AM

Cyba, no one said you couldn’t do all your modeling using Bryce…in fact, knock yourself out doing so but Bryce was programmed to import external objects.

Bryce is just a tool, the challenge is about creating art :-) or even just pretty imagery.

Dhama, the upload page should be up around the end of the week. I'm still re-building after a major virus infestation that required the wiping and cleaning of 4 hdds.

In the meatime, burn your stuff to a cd if you're that scared of losing it.
