Subject: PS CS3 to CS4 differences - drag and drop files

I've recently upgraded to Photoshop CS3.

With CS3, I could create a new file with specific dimensions, such as 450x550, 167dpi, 16 bit Grayscale.

I would have a RGB color 8-bit (or whatever), 72dpi image that could be dragged onto the Grayscale window and I would get the option to convert it. When I would select "yes" or whatever the command was, the file would appear as grayscale and I could continue working with it in the new format.

With CS4, when I create the same grayscale window and drag an RGB image onto it, the grayscale window changes to an RGB window and expands the canvas to fit. So if I create the CS4 grayscale window with pixel dimensions of 450x550 and drag a color RGB image that is 2500x3300 onto it, my original window settings are lost and the image remains unchanged.

I would prefer CS4 to work in the way I was used to CS3 working in this respect. I've looked through the preferences commands and have not found a command to turn this function off... is there one?

Thanks

I'm still on CS so I can't be sure but you might find setting in the Color Settings not the Preferences.

That was a good suggestion, thank you.

The default Color Management Profile settings were to Preserve Embedded Profiles.

I tested the drag-and-drop with each of the other settings:
Convert to working... and
Off.

The same results occurred. The existing window, created at 450x550 Grayscale, changed to RGB the size of the image being dragged onto it.

Try drag-and-drop while pressing different combinations of shift, ctrl and alt; shift+alt, ctrl+shift and so on.

Perhaps it does nothing more then center the image (I think that's shift), but you never know...

I would try it myself but I am still on 3.

Good luck

Coming soon

Hi everyone. I found the solution to the problem... reboot my brain and pay attention to the panel I was dragging from. I was dragging a new image with no history to the b&w file. My previous panel arrangement required layers and history to use scrolling, and because I did not pay enough attention to the panel where the icon being dragged was located, dragged the icon from the history panel to the new file, causing it to revert to the original.

My bad, and thanks.
