THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

.....on the STANDARD rules regarding future Bryce Monthly Challenges.

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?
Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?
Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?
Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)

The individual contest rules - those decided by the challenge setter (the guy who won the previous challenge) will remain in the hands of that person.

The question of imports will NOT be considered because without imports some members, in particular, Newbies, would not enter.

Now heads up! To keep this simple.....Cut and paste the Questions 1 - 6 into your replies and add your opinion after each question. If you wish, you can site-mail me your replies.

If you want to start a conflab, do it in a new post. I want this one to be easy to read and some folks will start to argue and I'm too tired atm to prepare a couple of dozen comfy chairs.

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?
1 month normally
2 months if busy times of the year (like Xmas)

Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?
No

Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?
Standard sizes for everyone would be best, whatever size that turns out to be.  So Yes.

Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
This is a nonsense question because R'osity time is so different to normal UK time that I have no idea when anything ends....

or starts...

If I did know I'd say Midnight as I'm around on the PC at those times, but not so around at midday - but that's UK time, so ??? Like I said - nonsense question.

Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)

Ditto above.

Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)
3 days (because of problems cited above)

800 is too small though a restriction-yes
Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
don't care
Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
don't care
Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)
3 days
It would be nice to end on a specific date (31st for example)

I guess the forum coordinators have to figure out a timing that we can all follow... no matter if we are in the twilight zone or the roaring light zone!

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?

1 month, ending at MIDNIGHT of the last day of the month, EVERY TIME.

Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?

No.

Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?

I think the size should be limited to 800x600 for the image that shows first, (so it fits the renderosity site better) but a link can be present to show a full size image, or open in new window to show full size, with no restriction.

Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)

midnight on the last day of the month or challenge day.

Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)

 midnight.

Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)

3 days.

I think the rules should be set in stone and never argued again.

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?

1 to 2 months at the discretion of the challenge setter who should also take extenuating circumstances into account. Things like time of year, holidays and such.

Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?

One challenge, one artist, one entry.

Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?

I concur with Weezer…800x600 on the board with option to view full size if this can be made possible.

Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)

This is a little thorny because not all members come from the same global location. New York is typically 5 hours behind London whereas Bangkok is 6 hours before London and Phoenix Arizona is 3 hours behind New York and so forth. If this can be decided then I would have to say Midnight.

Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)

If we can decide on what to do about question 4 then I would agree midnight.

Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)

3 days.

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?
...1 month

*Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?
*...No multiple entries unless the artist gives full rundown on their work... i.e. rj001; then they can have as many as they like. After all, this is a learn ing curve for so many; let's not restrict that.

Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?
...I'm happy with 800x600

*Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
*...12 midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

*Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
*...12 midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

*Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)
*...3 days, but it should be required that at least everyone that enters; votes!

Great to have so many replies so quickly, but I did forget one.

I think that it should be a cause for disqualification should an entry be posted outside of the contest arena. In other words, you can post WIPs in the challenge thread only, but you can't post your finished entries in the galleries until the challenge is closed.

All those in favour?

Q1. How long should the challenge run for?

  • I liked the old 1 month structure because it allows for more challenges per year.

Q2. Should contestants be allowed more than one entry?

  • Only one would be best, because thats what most contests do, less risk for misunderstandings that way.
Q3. Should there be restrictions on size. IE: 800 x 600 etc. ?
  • For the sake of creativity i wouldnt require any particular ratio. But a height limited to 800px would allow the pic to fit on most peoples screens. Width i'd take to 1000px or 1200 max.
Q4. What would be the best time for the entry deadline? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
  • Midnight 'rosity time
Q5. What would be the best time to end voting? (12 noon, 12 midnight etc)
  • Midnight 'rosity time
Q6. How long should voting be allowed? (2 days, 3 days,...)
  • exactly 72 hours, starting after deadline time.

I too agree with no posting of images in galleries untill after the challenge deadline.

Bryster, perhaps while we're at it we should also consider that entries should be newly created images not something that has already been posted or some image that won an award 2 years ago and you just dug it out from deep within one of your hard drives (I’m being facetious about digging it up). Just a thought.

P.S. Renderosity time is what....Tennesee CST?

Having gone through everyone's posts here I think I've managed to get a handle on a concensus of opinion of what folks want in the rules.

So, how long should a challenge last for? One month as the norm with an option for two months should circumstances, the time of year, or the challenge setter require it.

More than one entry? That's a big 'NO!' from most of you.

On the question of size, there was a mixed feelings about this one. So, I'm going with 'anything goes' from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768, but with the proviso that no-one should be penalised when it comes to voting because their work was presented at 800 x 600 when it might have looked better at 1024 x 768 or whatever.

As for the deadlines, Midnight Rosity time wins hands down; although some of you seem confused as to how Rosity time equates to your local. The answer to that is very simple. Rosity time sits at the very top of every page. Check this time against that on your watch/clock/chrono-particle-indicator/temporal-distortion monitor!!!!

And coming to how long voting should last for? 3 days!

Now read this next bit carefully!!
The idea of disqualification for posting challenge entries in the galleries before the end of the challenge got a big thumbs-up! I'm going to extend this to after voting. In other words I'm not going to allow anyone to post a challenge entry in the galleries until voting has been completed. While it's arguable that the advantage one entry might get would be negligable, the fact that an advantage might be seen to be gained is undeniable. I cite the discussions and upsets during the March/April challenge when artists posted two entries as my case in point. In other words, when you guys get the bit between your teeth on any contentious point all hell breaks loose and I have to pick up the pieces!

Post WIPs by all means but keep them in the Main Challenge Thread. DON'T make a new thread about your work till AFTER the challenge is over.

Finally, I have to thank Quest for making a very valid point that has been over-looked and like many I thought was a given.

Challenge entries should be NEW work; NOT something you've posted previously in the galleries or entered in other challenges or competitions. If it's been simmering on the back-burner on your HDD for ten years then fine. But it must not have seen the light of day prior to a challenge.

I hope this clarifies things. I'll be making changes to the main rule page shortly.
Thank you all for keeping this thread sane.
