The title says it all.  My old PC that I am using for this thread and other web stuff came with a bundled "data to DVD" application.  My graphics-only machine is running Windows XP Pro 64bit  OS.   It was a clean install with none of that prepackaged fluff.

For HD crash protection, I'm running twin 500g HD using Raid2 and also have a 500g external in case of fatal crash of Raid2. 

I want to save some of my photo image files to data DVD as I could do on the old machine.  Does anyone know a good application for that, freeware preferably.

This old Sony Vaio came with a program called Drag'n Drop to CD DVD.  Launching the program simply puts an icon on desk top that one can drag files from an open window to the icon.  The icon had a fill bar indicator and a simple click box to start the burn process.  Simple, huh? I like simple.  I googled the app and can't find it anywhere.  I even googled the vendor name listed in its help menu. 

Nero is the ONLY one I'd recommend   - Not free but you might be able to get by with an evaluation version.    

"Record now"  by Sonic....   Is not a bad one....

Well, let me round out the suggestions by mentioning Roxio, its all I have ever used.  And, yeah it has a drag and drop ability.

But, I have friends that swear by Nero and I do believe it costs less than Roxio.

I have CDBurner XP and I like it and it's free. You may donate if you feel the software is up to your liking. From the web site concerning 64bit:

Nero. I've never had one disc failure with it, although WMP has a burner app.

I use Nero. It came on a disk bundled with my DVD burner when I built my present system. I haven't had any bad burns or "coasters" and I've burned many a dozen of CDs and DVDs in the last year. Works great for audio/video files and data.

 Nero seems to be the winner if you can find a free version...mine also came bundled with a burner I killed long time ago...at least the software outlasts the hardware this time.. ...

I read the reviews on CDBurner XP so I down loaded it.  Some of the reviewers were ex-Nero users.  If it doesn't do a satisfactory job I'll dish out the $49 for Nero.

AAAAGGGHH   Nothing is simple about microsoft.  Installing CDBurner XP popped up a window ".Net Frame work 2.0 to be present (a microsoft package)   I downloaded the .Net Frame 2.0.  It will not work with 64 bit.  I found .Net Framework 3.5 sp 1 hoping it now addressed Windows XP 64.  (I could find no documentation at microsoft site addressing XP 64 compatability) 

So I downloaded it hoping the newest version would be compatible only to find out the download was on an installer that would access the web for the rest of the program.   (at this point does any one know that my graphics machine does not  ave internet access)  Attempting to get the rest of the plugin resulted in automatic install to my old machine and not a simple down load of the file.

I aborted the install and will now go cry before I kill mr gates in my mind again.

HOW THE CRAP DOES A PERSON GET UPDATES TO LICENSED WINDOOWS XP 64 IF THE MACHINE IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET?????????????

I could not get CDBurner XP to work no matter which .net framework version I enabled.  I made 2 dvd and 1 cd "coaster".  I conclude CDBurner does not run on  Windows XP Pro 64.   I uninstalled CDBurner and .netframe work.

I downloaded imgburner and it installed okay .  When I opened the program it created a log file that recognized my operating system correctly, found my CD/DVD burner, and displayed the type/manufacturer/free space of the blank disc in the burner.  I test drove it by burning images to a dvd.  It worked! 

The only added step I was not accustomed to was having to create an image file of the data before burning to disc.  So far so good.

Imgburner is another great piece of software. I use it all the time on my DVD's.

Really??  When you launch the ImgBurn the

TOP right most option is
Files / folders to disc  <--- Burns directly to CD/DVD From HD no need to make an image.

The Option below that is.
Image file from files / folders <--- Creates image first, than you can burn the image.

I'm trying the software my self....  since I only got one DVD burner and one CD burner It was good to have saved to disk first....  allowing me to then insert my black DVD disk and burn... 

Now:   the trouble I found is that the 'copy'  starts about 40 seconds into the movie...  I have to stop and restart it to see it from the beginning....   Odd...  Must try again....

This can spin into another topic, but I use dvdshrink to make my iso than burn.

the author of dvdshrink now works for Nero and its basically the same technology that he integrated into DVD Convert/Copy features found in Nero.

You’re not kidding this can turn into another topic. I also use DVDShrink together with DVDFab 5, DVDLab Pro, DVD Decrypter,  FixVTS, Virtual Dub, Pinnicle Studio 12 and a few others but we’ll not go there.

And this all just goes right over my head, lol. But I think I will be asking Quest about some of these progs he's mentioning. I've got a pc, that I want to keep offline for working on photos, home movies, cds etc. Sounds like I could use some of these things.

I'll go back and check; but I could not get the file-to-disc without first creating an image file first.  I'll check further when we have some time to dig further.   When it burned the images to the DVD I was happy.  I will push it harder next time and save some text files, Bryce stuff, camera RAW and what not to CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD+R.   I'll report it here.  (yes, I'll have to check what my burner hardware will support)  Things are busy around my house at the moment.  My daughter is graduating from HS this weekend.

Skiwillgee, ImgBurner will tell you what your drive can handle. In the menu go to "Mode" and select "Discovery". Then in the destination window dropdown select the drive letter then in the menu Tools select "Drive" and then "Capabilities" from the dropdown. This will give you a checkoff list of what CD and DVD types the particular drive can handle.

TKs, Ang and Quest.  As a single parent,  this fall will be a big change- what with daughter and son both away in college.  Empty nest.  I know I'll miss all the chaos of the past 20 years.
