Subject: Because I'm into self-torture...how do you make earring props conforming?

LaurieA ( ) posted Fri, 19 June 2009 at 8:56 PM · edited Wed, 16 October 2024 at 5:40 PM

Give me the short list (if there is one) or point me to a tute please if you can. I have these nice earring props I made years ago and I'd like to give them away as conformers for Kali and Kena. I figure conforming them would be easier for the end user to, well, use ;o). It's something I should probably learn anyway ;o).

Thanks in advance,

Laurie

The earrings in question on Kena:

If it where me, I would just smart parent them....no need to conform them.

I know, but:

I can't figure out how to smart prop in Poser 6/7 (was easier in 4), and I want to learn how to create something conforming, so I figured why not the earrings? ;o).

Okay. Conforming stuff will deform and bend them (ie; the earrings), that won't look good. These need to be smart parented, this way they will retain their original shape and follow the head. Also, the earrings need to come onto the stage in the right or correct position.

Mini Tut: Load figure, load earrings, position earrings, export earrings as wavefront obj. Now use that obj file because you have positioned them correctly.

New Scene: Load figure, load obj (earrings positioned correctly), select earrings and click on the Propertes panel and press SetParent button, select the figures head from the drop down menu, now save earrings to Props library. You should recieve a warning telling you that you are saving a SmartProp, acknowledge yes and now you're done.

Delete earrings from stage, load Props earrings and try moving the figures head...the earrings should follow automatically. 😄

I agree with DarkEdge that it is probably best to have the earrings as smart props. When Poser refuses to save something as a smart prop it is because you have used "Select Subset" when saving the prop. If you need to use "Select Subset" to include two or more objects in a pp2 (prop) file, then you will need to edit the pp2 to turn it into a smart prop. Open the pp2 in a text editor. Search for any lines that begin with "parent", edit these lines to use "smartparent" and the name of the parent actor, eg:

smartparent head

If the earrings were made up of multiple objects, eg a ring and a pendant parented to the ring, then you would only only need to smartparent the ring part to the head.

I've made smart props of them according to DarkEdge's directions and they work a charm. After I exported them as objects and then imported them back in, THEN they asked of I wanted to save them as smart props ;o). Couldn't figure out why they wouldn't before.

Thanks DarkEdge!!

Ok, from this step I would like to know...... Where is my .pp2 file? I've done the same as listed above, saved to prop library and have no problem for the steps above. But, when i go to my props folder and subfolder I have no .pp2?? I'm using poser 6. Any clues for me?

What happens if she's not in her default pose, when you add the earrings?

just wondering how smart are smart props.

They still go to where you smart propped them. In this case, parts of her ears. They inherit the bends of the parent.
