Subject: OT: My backup device causing boot-up problems

Hi all,

I use a Maxtor 640 GB USB external disk drive to store my Poser backups. If I leave it connected to my PC when I reboot, the reboot process seems to grind to a halt.

I also have a separate 150 GB USB external disk drive that is permanently connected to my machine (even during the boot-up process), but in this case it does not seem to cause any problems.

Can someone advise how I can leave my Maxtor 640 GB drive connected, without it crippling my machine during boot-up ?

I wish I did. My Seagate 1TB does the same thing if I try to boot up my XP machine with it connected.

Maybe booting from USB is enabled and the USB boot has the same problem with large drives as some bios did, so disabling booting from USB device might help.

At least you can access your files.  My Seagate worked fine until I loaded about 500 gigs of files onto it and now it will only show up in "My Computer" if it's been unplugged and disconnected from my computer for a period of time. However, it doesn't show up for very long!  Everything seems to go well and then I start getting little pop up messages from the right lower corner of my toolbar indicating that this file and that file can't be saved. All the files have symbols like &$% in them.  And after that while the device still shows up in My Computer until the next time I reboot, but none of the files can be accessed even though I can see them.  Weirdest thing I've ever encountered!

How is a USB Device permanently connected???

Isn't USB  (in part) defined by the connection? If its permanent how can it be USB. Rhymes not intentional....

Personally, I would not boot any computer with a USB external HD on.  Those things are not designed to be permanently switched on, they are designed for portability and convenience.  Not going through proper disconnects and power downs will only lead to drive corruption and, at worst, unexpected drive failure.  I have heard of too many horror stories about USB device failure through thoughless carelessness.
