Huge thanks to all who participated in this theme. The theme was much cooler than I at first realized.
Just to explain quickly so that no one gets annoyed, I do not like to vote without offering feedback. Feedback means much more than a vote any day if you ask me. Feedback helps us understand what is behind the votes, and helps us to improve as artists overall.
rj001 - 3 points / I like this render because it requires no explaination. Lots of character and whim as others have said. Very good realization of the current theme. This is not the most highly technically advanced render, nor does it need to be, for you are telling a clear story. Love the posing, love the thrust effects, love this render!!!!!!!!!!
From here it gets more challenging to decide.
Zorzim- 2 points / Very effective lighitng and superb material on the elephant. Superb mood establishment. This render displays a good deal of subtle mastery and is very proficient technically. I also think that in a day and age of everyone thinking they know everything, it is wise to remind us that no matter how good our intentions, we will never fully understand everything so we must keep an open mind!!!
Now the really hard part
C-Ram - 1 point / that scene is sickeningly good! Very Very Very realistic. You are a wise Brycer, as you know well that reflections are one of Bryce's strongest suits in terms of realistic renders. Modeling is incredible and seems very accurate. The chosen colors are amazing to say the least. I highly respect your keen eye for realism. I see a flaw in the scaling, either the board is too large or the grass is scaled far too small, I rather think the grass is the problem. Also, not really sure I get an outdoor feeling from this hdri. I often caution that not all hdri are right for all situations. Sadly, the hdris that provide the best reflections information often produce the least favorable light distribution. However my issue here is not light distirubution, but the color tints of the hdri. The blue feels like sky influence which is just right, but where is the bright warmer orange light coming from in an outdoor scene with blue sky all around? Feels more like an indoor/ outdoor situation, like as a deck. Maybe a deck is the feeling you were after? For me the orange is just not as effective as it should be, far too intense compared to the blue. There are some real problems with the way Bryce interprets IBL colors, so I do not blame you one bit for the inaccuracies of Bryce IBL! The floor tiles look like they belong fully indoors on a kitchen floor, not outdoors on a deck so the grass really seems odd. But still, undeniable as amazing overall.
Which brings me to the honourables.
Boekenwuurm / Again this is another render that requires no explaination. Teamwork is obvious here and the cause of saving the cat is certainly worthy. Lighting is very effective, I like the IBL TA combo here. In some places I feel the image is overexposed, such as on the plants or trees. These effects can be challenging to coordinate. My suggestion is to remember that IBL provides alot of indirect light via the diffusion channel, very different than the way TA does it with super blurred reflection. IBL causes banding and does not bleed colors, TA bleeds colors but with noise, weird geometry faceting, and the reflection process of TA is too obvious to be believed on its own as TA renders often look visibly wet. So combining diffuse (dry looking) IBL with ultra blurred reflection as TA (wet looking) , they can fix each others problems very nicely. But you must decide in a given scene which of these effects is the main indirect, and which is the supplemental indirect . Seems to me you would need to lower the intensity of one of these indirect effects. The strong sunlight you used seems just right to me.
Pugster56 / I see great potential with this render. To improve requires that you play around with the facial expression and eye focus of Bluey seated in the chair, as of now he seems to be in a different world, not fully connected to the rest of the scene. Your lighting is off to a good start, you were wise not to bake the scene in awful ambient glow. Deep shadows are better than ambient glow if you ask me, so I agree with the lighting so far. Now play around with placing a few weak radials around the scene to fix the shadows without resorting to ugly ambient glow. Really like the guy bent over, he seems fully connected to the scene.
adbc / The work put into the atmospherics is noteworthy. I cannot get such effects. The animals are incredible. Lots of good stuff here. For me the render lacks a certain depth or should I say dimension, seems rather "safe" and lacks the necessary shadows. On cloudy days the shadows would be very soft and directly underneath the characters. but still there is my point. Along with lines and curves, both light and shadow are required to create a 3d impression on a 2d surface such as a computer monitor, people often overlook the importance of shadows as a nuissance. I would turn off ambient glow for all materials and experiment instead with other means of indirect light that are not so uniform and 2 dimensional as ambient glow. Generally, even though the material libraries tend to mislead newer Bryce users, ambient glow is not a good thing and should never be used for room temperture objects. Ambient glow does not cast shadows so it leads to flateness in renders, making ambient glowing object appear thermal and hot like coals on a fire. Using a few weak and carefully placed or dispersed radials that do cast shadows as well as light does the job much more realistically, the shadows from multiple angles helps carve out the model geometry in a manner that looks 3d. The sky setting is my favorite here, it really sets the mood and creates a seamless progression from ground to sky, very very good indeed.
Thanks again to all who participated!!!!!!!
