Here is the next theme for August Bryce Challenge : Aviation

The rules

1. Any style or genre but ibl renders are welcome.

2. You can use past, present or future aircraft (from your imagination).

3. Anything goes as far as import models, mesh etc...

4)Use postwork sparingly. A scene should not rely entirely on postwork in order to be effective.

Aviation is one my favourite themes so you can count me in (fingers crossed)

The current challenge is just too cool...

When I heard of this subject, I began immediately to swirl around with concepts and sketches in mind...
A couple of movies popped out in mind; "the right stuff" on test pilots, directed by Philip Kaufman some time ago, and the 1982 blockbuster movie "Firefox".  I like very much the design of the stealth aircraft seen in ... "Stealth"

I definely will caarry on something out of these threads...
At first I just wanted to picture a modern dogfight with missile fired and smoke and fireballs... but then I got caught with peaceful considerations... maybe I should have opted for something like; a resignation letter on an high officer desk , and out of the windows you see a grounded bomber...  but this was all the way too peaceful even for me, so I think I' ll work on a different theme.

On the movie The right stuff" I have seen Chuck Yaeger story (a NASA test pilot) , and been struck by his flight high altitude/high speed on a F 104 Starfighter, ending up with stress failure on plane and he being jettisoned out and parachuting down. Hell, this is something I should do... On a side note I must add F 104 were used by the Italian Air Force til not much ago (yes, I am Italian) and they were nicknamed "flying coffins" by the pilots cause their extremely low portancy.

If you admire test pilots, those at NASA deserve our maximum respect. If you want to read detailed stories about the Apollo team test pilots you should read Oriana Fallaci "If the Sun Dies"

I loved that aborted YF 23 project, that plane looked way much cooler than the F 22 Raptor series...

But I have a fascination for the russian  Sukhoi  SU 27.

And I just found a rather pretty SU 27 3d model in a Taschen CD I had... so I have the chance to remap it and refurbish it for the task....

You have a lot of choise with aircrafts models. I agree with you, the Sukkoï 27 is a wonderful plane and it will be nice to see a composition with it!! just have a look to my gallery, by the past, i have work on the fabulous SU47 Berkut.

I'm just about starting to work on a mirage F1 "TC" (tacticle class) for the challenge..

Yes it was. That was a result of the aircraft's poor handling characteristics which caused it to impact into the side mountains on a regular basis.

AeroJett: Always save your work as a seperate file, like this:

Bryce scene1.BR6
Bryce scene2.BR6
Bryce scene3.BR6  etc.

This way means if your latest crashes you can always go one step back and recover.

Always done that, because I hate losing my works !
Anyway Bryce saves like this automatically, if you end  the namefile with a number. Example; if you save a "namefile_1.br6" if you save again Bryce will write another file named "namefile_2.br6" on its own.
At times I find this rather annoying, and I do prefer save subsequent files like this:
"namefile_one.br6"... "namefile_two.br6" and so on.

 The problem seems not to be saving copies as I go, I've done that before, but that whenever I have too many polygons Bryce crashes when I try to save. I figure it just has to do with processing power (I use a Mac Mini;) at times I've just had to render an image before trying saving so I only risk crashing after I've got what I need...

I know there is a file size restriction in Bryce, that is you can't save more than 2 Gb file, otherwise it will crash. Rashadcarter, a friend here, advice is to keep open the task manager windows so to keep under control the RAM usage..
The rule I know if you go say 1.4 Gb its risky to save.
One possible solution is to use polygon reducing tecnique.
I use either "quem loss " plugin in Lightwave modeler or the "decimator" plugin in Zbrush.

Here we go guys, i'm on holiday at the moment but you have to be faithful to Bryce no matter what hahah (actually its a rainy day);
this is the first image that came to mind when i read the challenge thread. i hope its suitable.
again i have gone for a Bryce render. to show what our little programme can do. and as i have been having some success with clouds and mist lately, and have found ways to keep volumetric render times low. so i went for it - and heres a few behind the scenes shots.

rinsed and repeated, then built a crop duster plane (nothing specific just built from imagination) placed it and then added the smoke trail spheres

so that's how you do a smoke trail. Been trying to get one done for my last render (Bryce part's finished...at least)...I'll keep this in mind for next time.

There is an easier way, but thanks for going to all that trouble. There should be something in your moderator tools, if you have such access....

For future reference, have a word with Admin, as I remember it from when I moderated another forum, it was fairly straight forward, but this is a different style of forum, so not sure.
