Subject: crashes when pressing ESC ?

Well, I'm strting to move around qickly in Vue4, and tonight had several crashes while working on a scene. I was in preview render, with a fairly small preview so it would render quicker. Pressing the ESC key once stops the render, and the second time, clears the screen. But if they are pressed too quickly in succession, Vue will crash, with the illegal operation notice. But, pressing ESC and then clicking the off button on the render window itself, hasn't led to any crashes. Also, it won't happen all the time, only, maybe one out of 4 or 5 times. This never used to happen in Vue 3, and I can say this for certain, because that's where I developed my ESC habit while rendering. Anyone else?

Sometimes V4 will ignore the ESC key alltogether unless you hit it a couple of times in a row, this mainly in larger renders. Noticed too that some objects (complicated) that used to handle fine in V3 really slow down V4 to the point where dragging a pointlight an 1" across a view may take 5-6 secs or changing a setting will as long as that per point. Things like that could also be a cause for strange behaviour in the ESC dept. The render itself will happen at as good a speed as you could expect on a 1Ghz 512Mb PC. Apart from that Mike, there's always KA (Keyboards Anonymus) to help you to get rid of those nasty computer related habits.

Yeah, I've noticed the slowdown too... The solution is close the program and open it up again... I've crashed a couple of times but luckily after I've saved... Haven't had theproblem with the esc key...

I've always used the "click it off" button (or ALT+F4 when the button's off the screen), so I never knew about using ESC to close the render window. I did cause Vue to crash when I tried doing too much, too fast for it to keep up with me. It needs its bit of time to redraw the windows plus update the little preview, change views as needed, etc., and I wasn't granting it enough time. How long that is, of course, varies with the system. I was feeling like king of the world having gone from a 200 mhz Pentium to a 1.4 gig Athlon -- wheee! Speed Racer! But even so, Vue still needs its little bit of time to do all its tasks, even if that just means one more second. :)

Hi, Escape-crashes happened to me also a couple of times exactly as you described...now I press that button very gently... Enjoy Sunshine in Life / Ole

I've had problems like Varian, where I've tried to do too many things too fast and Vue would go "no, no, no" and crash on me ;). But that was with version 3. The Vue 4 beta actually was more stable for me than Vue 3, believe it or not :). Laurie
