Poser doesn't need an Internet connection. It does need a TCP connection, both client and server, to communicate with itself internally. The world has somehow come to the point that all TCP communication is deemed "Internet", even when it isn't.

Whatever Zone Alarm calls these things, Poser needs to accept connections, but only from your own computer, and it needs to make connections, but only to your own computer. This is over the local loopback address, 127.0.0.1. Nothing else has to be open.

Note that Poser will not accept a connection from outside your computer, even if you set up your firewall to allow it.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Does it work on Windows computers that only have IE6? If my computer can't run IE7 will I be unable able to use Poser 8 on it?

I'm using it on a fully updated  XP SP3 machine with IE 6 and it seems to work fine.  I haven't yet gotten it to work with IE 6 running under Wine, so it may require an update to IE6..

hmmm I am puzzled now because I had the same problem...I installed and no libraries, just a blank box where the libraries should be.

I installed the right version of flash on ie 8 and on firefox... and looked at the folder
file:///C:/Program%20Files/Smith%20Micro/Poser%208/Runtime/ui/Flex/LSMGUI/bin-release/LSMGUI.html#

I can see the runtimes fine....except in poser.  I have restarted poser severl times and nothing but it working in the browser.   Ideas?

Try the firewall. Is it allowing Poser 8 access to the internet?

BeatrixKiddo ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2009 at 2:56 PM

It's allowing me to load figures via the browser and poses too.

Just turned my firewall off completely..Ui use Zone alarm..it works....but naturally i need Zone alarm to run... however anything to do with poser have full access. weird

You don't need to turn off Zone Alarm completely.  Just open it up (click on teh little Z in the task bar) click on program control on the lefdt hand side, and then on programs, find Poser Executable file in the list, click on the question marks or X's and select allow.

See bagginsbill post a few slots up for the explanation.

yeah I know I have done all that stuff but its still not allowing it..like I said weird..thanks for helping though, I appreciate it!

IS there an entry in the Zone Alarm programs list for 127.0.0.1? That's part of Poser 8 as well.

127.0.0.1 might also be named localhost. I am on a mac for poser but do work on win machines at work form time to time. Don't use zone alarm here. But have had issues with firewalls and what win thinks is the "localhost" and a sql app several years ago. Meaning you might not see the ip addy of 127.0.0.1 in zone alarm, but you might see the name localhost instead.

See that's the bit I REALLY don't get.  I also make websites. So when im running a testing sever like apache, that is the address of localhost.  why the heck is poser running localhost?

Dizzi ( ) posted Thu, 20 August 2009 at 5:14 AM

Because localhost is always the address of the computer itself, so it can talk to itself without knowing an official IP adress (which it may have multiple or even none)... Having roughly 65000 ports for communication with the same IP address, where's your problem? Lots of other applications do communication via sockets (IP address+port), too.
