Subject: Vue 7.5 Infinite - Build 44720

Mari-Anne ( ) posted Thu, 20 August 2009 at 5:07 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 4:52 AM

This is apparently the most recent 7.5 Infinite release in Beta form.  Can anyone comment on stability/experience?

I installed it and removed it 10 minutes later. It has the most annoying bug: the duplicate button and shortcut does in fact a scatter. When you try to duplicate it's like right clicking on the scatter/replicate tool. I use the duplicate function so often that this was for me a show-stopper. The previous build works for me perfectly. So that taught me (again) not to change a winning team... :-)

Oh, and by the way, if you do remove it you also have to delete the vue.env file in the environment directory. The standard "cancel last update" function doesn't do a clean job and the consequence is that the opengl shows always a black sky instead of blue with haze.

Yikes, Artur - doesn't sound very promising.  Think I'll hold off for now......

Downloaded last night - now I think I'll wait 'til it's no longer beta before I install though...Too little time, I actually used to not mind (enjoy??) beta testing

 I use 44720 now a few weeks without a problem. :woot:  I render many animations Vue run day and night. I am very happy with this release version. 😄

Does the duplicate button work correctly in your case?

Mazak ( ) posted Fri, 21 August 2009 at 7:55 AM · edited Fri, 21 August 2009 at 7:59 AM

In my opinion this is a new feature. If you in Scatter/Duplicate setup to one object it duplicate only one object. If you setup 3 objects you duplicate 3 objects. I like that much. But if I want a quick duplication I use ALT button and mouse drag!

I will try this at home tonight. From what I remember, even the alt+drag caused a scatter instead of a duplicate.

It depend on your work-flow. I almost never use the Vue buttons. I use Copy paste Ctrl+C Ctrl+V. So I can duplicate many objects in seconds. The scatter function I use almost never, I paint a eco system much quicker.

Maybe you had in your preferences Offset duplicated objects enabled, this looks like you scatter an object instead of duplicate it.

I think I know Vue enough to tell the difference. 😉
Besides, there's no much possibility for a mistake like that when I press duplicate once and I get 40 objects in a row.

Why use two keys if I can use only one? Ctrl+D is duplicate. I admit I didn't use ctrl+c ctrl+v, have to try that, maybe the bug doesn't manifest that way, thanks.

Ok, I installed it again and now I understand what happened. I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature but it sure is a different behavior from all the previous Vue versions before. IMO, it's quite annoying and I can't see how that can be useful so I'd classify it as a bug.

See in the image that number I signaled. That number before had effect only for the scatter/replicate dialog. It had no effect anywhere else. Now, in this new build, this number is also relevant for the duplicate tool (regardless of whether you click the duplicate button or press ctrl+d). If you try to duplicate an object, what really happens is that you multiply it, not just duplicate it. In the case of the attached image, if I duplicate any object, I'd get 9 copies of it.

Now, that's really annoying. It means that if I use the scatter/replicate tool, I always have to be careful afterwards to reset the number back to 1. But, anyway, now that I understand it, I can live with it. So, Mazak, thanks for the tip. :-)

Mazak, two notes on this:
a) for a 2D area you may be right but for a 3D area that's not correct. It's much faster to scatter multiple copies of an object in a 3-dimensional space than to paint it in an eco.
b) eco paint creates instances that you cannot move, unless you select and turn them into objects (which is much slower than using replicate). The scatter is a great way to have a good number of objects scattered across a volume and then manually adjust individual items.

I haven't had much problems other than the usual GUI hickups (typed numbers are out of order sometimes).  And this build does not crash on me when I overload my Win32-bit system with Poser 6 imports.  Vue simply states that my resources are low and asks if I'd like a backup saved quickly to restore my scene with later in the event that I continue going down the wrong path.  Vue then restarts and detects that a scene restore file can be loaded if I want.  Memory gets freed up.  I like this build a lot.

I just have 2GB of RAM.
