Subject: 2 Instances of Vue rendering and a few other points

andrewbell ( ) posted Wed, 02 September 2009 at 4:23 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 1:55 PM

Hello a while ago I posted a thread relating to using over 6 gig of ram (i was having difficultys) and now I am not! I created an animation recently and it got to frame 200 or something like that and crashed ... out of memory error. Someone also tought me to set the amount of cores that vue uses down to 7 rather than 8 and with that extra core I can use the likes of poser, watch movies etc. Then I thought if I free up two cores I may be able to open another instance of Vue... sure enough I could and there was not a lot of slow down either. So now I create a scene with Poser and Vue on two cores whilst rendering on the other 6. Then the strange part... I decided to render on both open Vues at the same time (enabling all cores on each instance) and it worked much better than I thought In fact both render at almost same speed as one (animating not still pictures). Now my ram usage is at 5.5 gig and I feel I am using my rendering time much much more efficiently now and almost all my ram.

Here are stats:

1 render 9.5 mins
2 renders 11.5 mins for both same scence!

If I try to enable 4 cores on 1 instance and 4 cores on the other it goes much slower but if I set both to use 8 on each it works fine.

My next step is to try 3 or 4 open renders I was hoping that someone else renders in this way and if I was to have four instances of a render open (if my ram will cope) what would be the most efficient way to set the cores?

Bryster,
time to move on from the PentiumHamster, mate? hehe :p
new rigs are sooooo much better, seriously :) my Quadcore intell 6600 CPU 64 bit rig, 8 gig ram, renders x10 faster than my previous Pentium4, as an example.

Bryster,
2TB? well yes, actually! my art rig as a 1TB drive and 2x500 gig drives ;)
as for my art being better or worse, well...that's entirely subjective and you know it ! bonk :p
Doesn't really matter in the end because it's just about what you, or I, or anyone, enjoys doing :)

But you could do a hell of a lot more/better art with more advanced apps, I know you love Bryce(hey I did once, still do in a way), but you should try other apps to see what you may enjoy :)

Art apps are as unqiue to the individual, as to whether traditional artists like acrylic or guache or oils or inks or whatever. You adore Bryce I adore Vue, but nto good to close our eyes ot other things.

I've tried and bought quite a few apps over the years, but health etc limits my ability to "dig into" them. I like Lightwave, but just don't have time ot hammer into it, alas.
I've found 3DCoat a LOT more user friendly than Zbrush, lol. But Zbrush's Zspheres are absolute amazing for modelling organic creatures basic bodies.
Rhino I adore using for modelling (though one day I want to buy T-Splines to let me do more organic/poly-like modelling inside it)
Maxwell is a jaw dropping renderer.
UVMapper is great for UVmapping
etc etc.
:)

Silver, not to get into a p**sing contest, there's a very good reason I prefer Bryce. The UI. I just do not like other apps, their quadrant views and millions of little buttons everywhere. Bryce gives me exactly what I need. Sure! It could be better. But it suits the way I think when I'm visualizing an object or image. Sure! It could be faster. But then I need to take a break now and again, if only for my health's sake. And then again, I'm getting to long in the tooth to learn another app.

I do like SILO when it comes to nurbs modeling and it has helped me out now and again, but Bryce is where I'm at and that isn't gonna change any time soon. I use Poser too, but that's limited because of the subjects I choose to create.

To be fair, I did look at Vue. I watched a tute but I wasn't impressed. That's not to say you guys don't make great art, just that I like Bryce.

Bryster
that wasn't the way I meant it :)
As I specifically said, in a round about fashion EACH TO HIS OWN.
Just a better PC and newer proggie can sure help. Doesn't make betetr art automatically , but it sure cna help, it's silly to deny it or you'd sitll be using Bryce 2 and a 486, hm? :)
I've said on this and many other forums, Martin Murphy's work done 10 years ago with Bryce 3 and Painter II is STILL outstanding art!

And I aint bragging about my PC, jeesh, wanna brag, see what one of the new i7 CPUs can do, now that's what I'd like to have, but don't...utnil I win the lotto :p

bryce 7 must be made with a 64 bit version, 'cause the change from 32 to 64 bit, with suitable PC, is astounding, can't recommend it highly enough!
Think you said previously Bryce 6.1 supports multi core CPUs? so that's an important imrpovement already. :)

The ability to access over 2 Gigs of Ram was reason enough for me to upgrade to a 64 bit system. My Tenochtitlan project would not have been possible in its current form if I were limited to a 32 bit computer.

Of course, not everybody has the same goals, but some software (like Vue for example) doesn't do as well on older systems.

I'd like to know how can I do a render area with render animation!
please help me!!!!!!!!! :-)
Thanks!

What happened to my thread ! lol    Silverblade I am actually using your render settings atm very fast and I accept they are better than presets Superior mode was doing my head in with way too long render times !

I have now tried 3 instances of vue, would not let me run all three using all cores so had to select different cores for each instance.

Rendering was much slower but it did still chug along, def need more ram now! This is quite good for my animation project I am doing atm as I can set multiple scenes up to render whilst at work. because if one finishes early there are still two more to go! However it is a lot more unstable. The 2 renders at same time is definatly working well however I have had a mixed bag of results in terms of it being worthwhile, things seem to slow up a bit more if poser figures are thrown into the mix am still experimenting and the good definatly outways the bad.

I think it is that box next to the render whole scene button? never used it myself ... but there are definatly some people here that will know!

~ Another note to silverblade , your suitcase is excellent ; -)  read all the tutorials in there now.

I have a question is there a way to start off an object e.g a ball with a rocky texture and over the period of a 50 frame animation make it clear or reflective?

If you have RenderCows (or a Vue version with included RenderCows) you can set up 2 or more
RenderCows on one computer (using different port numbers).
Less UI overhead, and you can keep working with Vue.

No rendercows unfortunatly ! Be very wary when trying this method of two instances obvioulsy ran out of ram the other day and ruined a whole day of rendering aghh! However on low memory scenes works like a charm
