Subject: OT - plagiarizing yourself is it possible?

nyguy ( ) posted Thu, 10 September 2009 at 10:29 AM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 2:23 PM

Many of you know me and know I go by different screen names on different sites. I had wrote a small review of a new figure (not saying the name) that was released and posted the review on my Site. I also decided to post it on another site's forum that I frequent allot and not even 5 minutes later I was accused by a member that I had plagiarized it from my own site! Now I had posted this under nyguy on the site since they will not change my name to FWHSDesigns.

I think it is funny this person (not stating any user names) who is not a noob, did not know I am the owner of FWHS Designs and go by the different names.

Hi!

Maybe you could put a note in your post that you are the owner of FWHS Designs?

And maybe you should be flattered that this person stood up for your (FWHS Designs) site.

But then again its rude to accuse someone in public, it would be better if he had sent a note to your site explaining his concerns.

I agree with jonnybode...most sites have Moderation where these things can be reported as we do here at Renderosity. nyguy...maybe you could add a Readme explaining this in your download to prevent confusion in the future.
Actually, as a songwriter in real life I have plagerized myself a number of times...sometimes it's a tune, sometimes it's words, and it's rarely me that notices much to my embarassment. From the point of someone telling me I generally use that info in a preamble about the song if doing a live performance, or in the notes if it's for a recording.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Amusing. The universe gives us little doses of irony to keep life interesting

In academic circles the accusation of plagiarism is avoided by attribution. One credits the source. For instance, I wish that the promotional pictures of products attributed the source of things not included in the product (including poses) and at least the site where those products can be found.

You could also sign your contributions with your forum name and an "(A.K.A. – nyguy)"

I am no lawyer, but yes, you can actually plagiarize yourself. If you produce work under a contract so that the work belongs to someone else, you have not right (unless stipulated in the contract) to use that work.

Probably edited for spelling, grammer, punctuation, or typos.

John Fogerty was once sued by Fantasy Records for plagiarizing one of his own songs.

And the use of Creedence Clearwater Revival as he no longer owns the name of the band...had to wait years before he could even perform any of the tunes written by his own self.. ...

What Fazzel said.  Of course that didn't happen without a lot of drama going on first.

Not too sure how to add a readme to a product review.

I thought that it should have been notice able by my signature on the site in question I was the owner of FWHS Designs.

I have talked to the site own and he is willing to change my user name on the site if I help him revamp it some.  On a side note I am going to get  my name change and about $200 worth of product off the site :thumbupboth:

but back to the point about the subject at hand - ### plagiarizing yourself
