A few questions here:
What character were you using?
What did you do differently in the No Render?

Sorta OT, but...

Whenever I see this thread title I read it as "SR1 to no avail".

am I the only one who can't read properly?

NoelCan, is V4 the only thing in the scene?  Do you have any props, backgrounds, etc?

jenX  I have Vicky 4,  TerraDome with atmosphere,  Rhiannon's Wings.  hair and a jpg background.

Render time without IDL is  less than 15 mins.  Time with IDL over 5 hours.

JenX ( ) posted Wed, 23 September 2009 at 8:35 AM

You're going to have high IDL calculation times regardless.  You'd have high IDL rendering times with Maya and a high-power computer.

Poser's IDL is trying to calculate the shadows within the tiny particles of the atmosphere. That's going to take a loooooooooooooooooooooong time.  If it ever finishes.  It's not a problem with Poser, that's just how IDL calculation works, in every app.

Try going into the Settings of each figure that could give you trouble (usual culprits are atmosphere and hair), and uncheck Visible in Raytracing, see if that helps you at all.

Here is a tutorial on using IDL feature in P8:

http://www.runtimedna.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46536

Vincebagna is not using the terradome product for his renders, but he tries to give a comprehensive guide on how to approach IDL logically.  JenX is correct; the more added features and higher settings will increase the render time significantly.

JenX ( ) posted Wed, 23 September 2009 at 9:24 AM

Actually, in that one, VinceBagna is using BagginsBill's envirosphere.  Terradome wasn't available yet ;)

noel, in re: IDL render over 5 hrs:

  • please post render settings
  • is an atmosphere object present in material room or pose room drop-down menu?
  • what is your estimate of total of all texture map sizes in MB?
  • was texture-filtering used?
  • how long is the IDL render with no wings, no hair and no atmosphere?
  • any AO nodes on any textures?
  • any of the following channels non-zero on anything other than eyes/hair: ambient, translucence, refraction, reflection, alternate diffuse, alternate specular

Atmospheres will slow any renderer down to a snails pace.

aeilkema ( ) posted Thu, 24 September 2009 at 3:36 PM

They're not real atmopheres as Poser offers, but transparency maps. Reading this doesn't give me much hope, it means that the transparency render lag still hasn't been fixed. Perhaps it's one of those bugs that will never be fixed?

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Thu, 24 September 2009 at 5:51 PM

Transparency lag is not a bug, it's the effect of calculations having to be performed to figure out what passes  through and what doesn't. You're going to see lag on Transparency, Reflection and Atmosphere no matter what render engine you use because they all take a lot more calculations to render.
