Subject: make or fake?

brycetech ( ) posted Mon, 28 September 2009 at 8:35 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 3:52 PM

Hi all
Dont know as I've ever posted here, but I found something on youtube that I thought was like the kewlest thing ever.
then after looking and watching a few more times, I find myself a bit more skeptical.  So Im here asking those of you that really can dance around in photoshop...did he make this or fake it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssOJQXdwmrI

is anyone really that talented? is it a combo of tracing and drawing or is he for real?

just wondering.

Oh yes I think so..this is an artist at the top of his game and I suspect that he could do it in ANY medium he chooses.Speaking as an art teacher  tracing is only as good as the user.A poor artist using tracing will still produce a poor picture.😉

You should have seen see the annual National Portrait Gallery's(London) competition  this year.

Some of them were so photographic in quality, this person had to put her nose to the canvas to see the actual paint brush strokes and even then it was hard.I was blown away by the standard but judging by previous years winners that I also looked at it wasn't a particularly better year than others.

So yes I believe this is a genuine piece of art work but just done in Photoshop instead of on a canvas.

Yeah, he's just fantastic and it's especially fascinating when it's done in time lapse speed drawing. I’ve done a little pen and tablet drawing using Photoshop but watching him makes one want to draw. Obviously he uses pictures to sit in as models like he did here with Megan Fox’s clip from “Transformers”.

Here he does Slash from Guns n Roses:

If you scroll down a little it tells you a little about him.

ya think so?
I know there are people who can paint realistically.  My friend used to date an artist with the talent you talk about above.  You could not tell it was a painting...other than to see it was on canvas.  Be it animal, vegetable, mineral, person, or scene...she was amazing.

I know I may be a bit skeptical of the image because Ive watched it again and again and see things that dont make sense.
Perhaps if I steer the answer.
what if its not tracing, what if its layers on layers and the eraser is being used to show the layers beneath?  look at the other art there...of people.  None have the power of her face.  Of course, we've all been beaten to death with megan fox, but I still wonder.  I hope he is that talented.  He's amazing if he is.  I just cant help be think that part of it is real (the car, background, and maybe jeans and t) and part of it is "revealed" by using the eraser and layers.

However....if hes not faking.  Does anyone think they personally could fake such an image and animation? I think I can by using the "reveal" method as I described above. In fact, I think I may try it just for the heck of it and post it as a response to the image.  It'd take a while to set up and do...but it'd be "the other side of the coin" as it were.

still, interesting to think about.  No disrespect to the artist intended btw. Just being pessimistic I guess.

:)
interesting to watch happen at any rate regardless of how its done.  Inspirational to see someone use photoshop to such a painterly quality.

LOL...what I meant was that he wasn't drawing from memory or conjured mental image. that's why I uploaded the images to show where he got it from...in case you or anyone reading this didn't know. It would be easier when the picture is the background layer and you adjust the upper layer's opacity to trace out the lower image and then sample the colors and place it on the top traced image...an effect done automatically using Painter's clone brushes. But it's also a thrill and a real challenge when you place the image on the side and sketch it directly onto a new document using only eye and hand coordination.

think when I get my new OS installed, I'll try this as a "fake" technique.  It'll be fun for "gits and shiggles".
still seems like her face doesnt match the rest of the site and is too real based upon other items.  However, doesnt really matter.  In a hundred years..who'll care.

for that matter, who'll care next week? lol

:)

still was interesting to watch happen.

it's a good copy, but I'd be more at ease (from ethical and legal standpoint) if he also does original work.  I used to do these, but I quit because I felt it was illegal and too easy.  it's alot harder creating a realistic image de novo.

I found a vid where he does it in front of a crowd...so I guess hes on the up and up.  But...odd that the  other faces arent as detailed as this one.

I think the guy is good and he made an effort to share his techniques with others.
