Subject: Shiny Floors

TimKiver ( ) posted Mon, 17 August 2009 at 1:55 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 12:24 AM

OK . . . so I'd like to create a shiny floor like a car showroom, could be black or a texture like marble, that bit doesn't matter so much. But I don't know where to start to make an object placed on the floor reflect in it.

Any help for this newbie very much appreciated.

You can play with the specular highlights, create a raytraced reflection, or an environment map.

Hi!

Take a look at "Mapps" free Poser 5 materials:
www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/index.php

Use them and notice how they work, you can then learn to create your own or simply use thoose that Mapps so kindly offer.

Remember to enable reflections too.

Regards / Jonny

Here's a simple black reflective floor you can try for starters.

The reflection correctly increases with decreasing camera angle to the surface, so when you are looking perpendicular to the surface there is much less reflection. The Edge_Blend colours are Inner (21,21,21) and Outer (177,177,177). If you want more reflection at a straight-on camera angle, lighten the Inner_Color slightly.

It has a slight bump to it, which you can remove if you want it perfectly smooth.

Shall I post the material file?

IsaoShi - Would you please post a picture of the materials for your tile wall?  Thanks.

scarlock - of course, here ya go! Hehe - sorry, this is probably no good to anyone, but you did ask!

It's a parameter-controlled tile shader I'm still working on, in my rather dilatory way. As you can see it uses three separate tile nodes for colour, displacement and reflectivity, and it has the control parameters down the left hand side, easy to use in the Material Room, and also all set up to use with Parmatic.

I was going to give it as a freebie here in the forum when I was happy with it. I have not got it working correctly for all light conditions, so it's not really ready yet. But I can post the material file here if you want to have a play.

EDIT - it would not upload a JPG2000 file, so I replaced it with a normal JPG - less compression and worse quality, I'm afraid.

Here's the (compressed) material file for the tile shader. (Save it in your Materials Library folder somewhere and remove the .txt file extension).

I'm going to change the displacement, but I haven't had time. At the moment, it uses positive displacement for the tile surface, but this doesn't work well with things touching the surface - they get buried. So I'm going to change it to zero displacement for the tile surface, and negative displacement for the tile edges and mortar lines. (I should have done it that way in the first place).

In this version, I reduced the diffuse value to 0.8 (mainly for use with Poser 8 IDL), and I boosted the reflection falloff with camera angle (Fresnel effect), but I haven't had time to test it properly. The Edge_Blend node controls the Fresnel effect and the Diffuse/Reflected light balance.

The parameters are hopefully self-explanatory. I've found it best to load this shader on a Box or a One-Sided Square. I had problems using the GROUND, a Hi-Res square, and a Square. With the first two, the geometry interferes with the displacement. On the Square, the mapping is incorrect, and you have to remove backfacing polys in the render.

Happy tiling! I'll post an improved version when I've done it (Christmas, maybe!)

I am working on it right now. It will have many new mats and a bunch of fixes to the old mats to improve the look and render speed. Basicly making fixes based on what i ahve learned since the earlier ones were made.

Go for Mapps materials for sure. I'm working on a video that needed a car with a reflective floor and I used Mapps materials for that, as you can see from the image. I just picked the metal I liked the most. I've been using his materials for a few years now and they're awesome.

@Mapps, congrats with the anniversary and thanks for the awesome materials! Looking forward to the renewed set.

Thanks, hard to believe it has been 5 years :-)

It is just a small updat/expansion though, containing 314 materials (so Far) :-) there is a new section of Vehicle metals and finishes too. I also purchased some cars and wanted to change the surface apperance so I made some new car mats :-)

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 22 October 2009 at 3:37 AM

Please, I don't care what the other say, don't rush. I rushed a shader, introduced a kludge, didn't test in enough light settings and now I have to fix it... and realize that rushing it just isn't worth it.

Take your time... remember, Poser and shaders is fun, not a chore... :)

There are generic paint that can be used on any car model. I have purchased many models here that are awesome but are 3DS or OBJ and are not painted when you take them into poser. These mats are my solution to that.

Yes the reflective one require a real world Environment and do not work with Backdrops. There are several 3d world environments available in my free section.

I only use 3D environments and these are Mats used by me for my work. So they are set up the way I use them. If you are using sphere reflection maps you should use your backdrop for the mat so the reflection matches the environment. Use a reflection value of about 0.4 for metal and for colour use a medium grey do dark grey. this will help prevent washing out the colour on the model.

When I purchase a model that has sphere maps the first thing I do is remove all of them and replace them with RayTaced reflections.

:-)
