Subject: intact textures with 3ds. figures

Is there a way to make it so 3ds. figures imported to poser still have their textures? The figures load fine but the textures are all gone. This has happened to me several times and no mater what I try to do, nothing seems to work.

The problem with .3ds (I think) is that it has no reference to what materials are used. Therefore you are left trying to figure out what goes where, and hence the reason I try and stick with objects that also have that nice little .mtl file ;o). I know it can't always be done, but after tearing my hair out with trying to match textures I've learned to leave .3ds alone.

Hopefully someone will come along and say, "Well, that's so simple a caveman could do it..." and then we'll both know ;o).

3ds only supports the older 8.3 format for texture names, it does warn you when you export it.

Poser looks in folder where you have 3ds file for the textures first, then it ask you where it is when not found.

Also you should tell it to preserve the max texture coordinates when exporting.

Use PoseRay and convert them to .obj - best option IMO.

Even IF you load an imported OBJ file the texture is going to be missing until you assign the material / texture in the Poser Material Editor.

Doesn't matter if it's 3DS or OBJ in either case. (as far as I've know from my own experience)

Next best thing to do is once you've done whatever you need to do with the imported model in whatever format it is after having been brought into Poser and assigned it's materials/textures in the Material Editor is to save it to the Poser Library as for example a Prop.

If it's a 3ds file, in this case, save it out from Poser as an OBJ then import it again into Poser, assign your material and save it to the library.

I don't believe there's any way around avoiding the Material Editor in a nutshell.

Poser will load OBJ files with their textures but they need to have been save with a MTL file to tell Poser what texture maps to use (however, you may still need to locate the textures).  For 3DS file I have occasionally been able to load them with their textures but usually there are problems either due to how they were saved or the texture map names being truncated to 8.3 in the 3DS file.

Exporting as an OBJ and then importing again are not necessary .  You can set up your materials and then save to the library.
