Subject: Need Help with Images

First I sincerely apologize if this is the wrong place.

I went to get some large prints made today for an art exhibit and when I got the proofs back they were extremely dark compared to what I see on my monitor and what my printer prints out.

This has me worried about how my art is showing up here.

I would be most appreciative if I could get some people to take a look in my gallery and let me know if my images look "normal" or if they are really dark. 

Any help would be really appreciated with this.

Very nice gallery!  The renders do not seem too dark.

I try to suggest that people use one of the monitor calibration pics available on the web to check brightness and contrast on their monitors. A lot of work on my screen looks very cery dark to the point of being  Oh, its a black bear in a cave  :) 

Your gallery looks OK on my screen . 

The monitor calibration issue has been discussed before , it makes it very hard to know what the artists intentions were, unlike a print.

I really started to get worried when my prints came back exactly as you described  "Oh, its a black bear in a cave "

I'm starting to think it might have just been the printer in this case, Thank you all for taking the time to help me with this.

some of 'em looked too dark or had too low dynamic range on my monitor (1.8 gamma).
but the other respondents may have 2.2 gamma setting AFAIK.

It's not too dark on my monitor - cool gallery, BTW!

Maybe this might help - monitors are back-lit which means they have an inherent brightness to them.

Slap a "bright white" piece of paper down on your countertop/desk/sofa - that's as bright as it will get, and it only gets darker.

What you may end up needing to do is something like a mild "Highlights/Shadows" adjustment in Photoshop - something to bring your gain/midtones up.

Send me an image that you were particularly disappointed by the print and I'll work it over a bit and send it back to you, and have it printed again. It may just need some pre-press adjustments (yes, this is what I do for a living, and NO - I'm not even thinking of charging you).
