what's with all the sideways markeplace images anymore?
sure, its all artsy fartsy and stuff, and some of them are done quite well, but my damn neck is kinked to the side now. People think I'm some kind of weirdo when they see me all bent over and shit*.(well, they thought that before my neck was all bent over, too)

anyway, let's get back to the right side up images. I think it better portrays the product anyway, instead of having your customers turn the damn monitor sideways to see them correctly. My 21inch CRT is damn heavy too.

Hey Dave, I of all people (who swears like a sailor myself) don't mind a little language, but could you click the language tag please? It's always a good thing to have a little respect for those that don't appreciate it ;o).

CRT ... it is a synonym for heavy.

for instance, my TV weighs 175 pounds, and my minotr is 40, and my neck hurts

Turn the image on its side in your mind... and send an email to the artists like you (saw your avatar) that do that.

they could switch to those vertical-scan flash banners, unless it's too hard to code for them.  not the ones that blink on/off, but the ones that scan from head to toe.

My issue now aside from those sideways promos is all the terrible promos composed as if shot from standing on a ladder over the subject or maybe from a ceiling fan and not one render from waist or eye level. This technique is usually used in conjunction with promo copy that leaves me completely uncertain as to what in the render is the actual product... the clothes? the hair? the character?

Depends on where you are looking.
Some stores gives us vendors silly sizes to work with...like 468x60.
(asking store) Just exactly what the hell am I supposed to do with that???

I would rather have 60x468, at least that way I could show half of my model.

Comitted to excellence through art.

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 22 October 2009 at 7:56 AM

I have to agree, and also the images of the model looking up at the camera, or not showing the back of the model. I'm not in the store to buy art, I'm here to see if there is a model I can use in my own art. Like the new hair that shows about 90% of the models face, but only 10% of the hair and that's what they're selling. You are selling a product guys/gals, you should be showing it in the best and most informative light in order to give us, the buyers, the most info you can about it. Usually when the pics don't show what it is, I just pass and don't even check the product out. If you want to sell the items then show them...of course it's always your choice to show off the art you made with your product but realize that everyone's taste is different and your pics may turn someone away instead of encouraging them to buy.
Just my opinion.

momodot ( ) posted Thu, 22 October 2009 at 12:20 PM

Yeah, and the hair promos that show the hair in 18 different bucket fill shades but from only one vantage... no three-quarter, profile or back view.

Like... Lollipop over at Daz?
8 identical renders, the only thing different is the haircolor.

I HATE that.

Fine, if it's a texture product. But if you're selling the model, then show it from all angles please.
Well, at least Daz has a decent returns policy.

Every time a specific part (like if it's a male texture: the genitals) isn't shown I conclude that there's either something missing or something wrong. And skip that product.

And I¨'m more annoyed at the flashing things in the side bar. the top banner is easily scrolled away from if it flickers and is annoying, but that pesky side bar thing stays right smack where I'm trying to READ something.

Out of principle, I'm noting the vendors that post annoying flickering side bar ads - and boycott them.

well, with the sidebars, sideways, and the rest, will there be any vendors selling anything?

They propabably just assumed that everyone has already seen the promos when it was here.  😉

Yeah - some of us old farts still have them (I'm eyeballing all this on a 25" CRT - bought it back when you couldn't color-calibrate an LCD monitor)

Nosiferret ( ) posted Mon, 23 November 2009 at 9:36 AM

This has been a pet peeve of mine as well. I've noticed a lot of hair/clothing promos just showing the front of the product. I think there should be 3 base images, front-side-back and then they can get artsy with the rest. I agree on those side images. Also the promos where they seem to be advertising one item but showcasing another. Such as I've seen some hair texture promos where the models appearance distracts from the reason behind the promo. Granted, they're trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone pretty much.

My 2 cents worth...
