Subject: How many Runtimes; how many Posers? in users' computers

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Mon, 21 September 2009 at 5:13 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 10:58 PM

What proportion of Poser users have on one computer?:-

  • More than one Poser version loaded at the same time?
  • In one Poser installation, more than one Runtime?

(My Poser 7 installation has 3 Runtimes: its own Runtime, and the Runtimes left over from my previous Poser 4 and Poser 5 installations.)

Are there any PC computer users where the main (primary) hard disk is not C: ?

(Way back in the Mesozoic when 128 megabytes was a big hard disk and the latest Windows was Windows 3.1, someone who I heard of where I worked had a PC with four floppy drives A: B: C: D:, and his hard disk was E: .)

I have Posers 4-8, their internal runtimes, and one external runtime (for testing purposes), all on my C: drive.

I've been increasingly tempted of late to remove Poser 4, but the majority of my content is installed in its runtime.  Also, there's a certain nostalgia factor involved in keeping it around.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Mon, 21 September 2009 at 5:58 AM

Heh like LittleDragon, I still install most new things into my poor old Poser 4 Runtime.

I have the Poser 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 runtimes, plus 5, 6 and 7's Download-runtimes. And my Poser 4 runtime is split into a lot of virtual runtimes with PBooost. So I can't really say how many there are. Some 80-90 gB in all I guess.

And my Poser is on my K:

Most of my programs are on E: although a few are on D:

I have no programs, short of Windows itself on my C:

Poser 6 to 8 and I still put stuff into my Poser 6 runtime, but use Poser 7 [LOL].
It makes no difference to me because I use Vue for rendering.
I use sub folders so Poser 6 through 8 all have their main runtimes still, but as I said Poser 6 is where any new purchases go!

Poser versions 4 thru 8, each including it's default runtime for version native content...
All other content sits in 13 external runtimes...
All this stuff has it's own harddrive... I've also moved all the pref and temp folders from their default
location to this harddrive.

grichter ( ) posted Mon, 21 September 2009 at 7:33 AM

I all content still loaded in external runtimes not under a specific version except my geometries and texture folders which are all under PoserPro and Python in both PoserPro and P8. Run PoserPro to set up the scene and do some rendering, while at the same time I have P8 running, to do renders if I so elect to advance the scene to use IDL. Granted once PoserPro2010 is out and stable, the above becomes moot and will only run PoserPro2010.

I have Poser 4 and 6-7 installed on my D: drive. All content is installed to external runtimes sorted by figure and type (props: plants, scenes, etc.). I only use Poser 4 for testing now.

Just P6 and P4 (for speed), but multiple runtimes are common no matter what proggie you use (e.g. D|S' directory settings).

I split mine by major figure type - A3, V4, TY2, etc... figures that I know won't have a lot of support I lump together, and I have a separate runtime just for non-human and non-figure-specific stuff (animals, furniture, environments, vehicles, etc).

This way I can load/unload what I need for a specific session... works out pretty good.

old machine : Poser 5 6 7 8 and Poser Pro
new machine : Poser 8 and Poser Pro

The old machine is only used to render and for testing with the older Poser.

The two machines are installed in the same way : all runtimes are on a second disk G: , on C: i have only the internals Poser runtimes

157 runtimes, i own almost all figures and they are installed in separated runtimes, most runtimes are not connected to poser, currently i use Aiko3, Cookie, Miki2 and TeraiYuki2, hairs, props ... so around 20 runtimes connected, i have written a utility to select the runtimes to use and write the LibraryPrefs.xml for every Poser installed.

The runtimes are synchronized between the computers, with a backup on a NAS

Can it guaranteed that the head folders of all runtimes are called "Runtime"?

I have Poser 6

You can see my external runtimes in the above image.

No.
Poser used to allow any folder with the correct library folders to be used, IIRC, this ability was removed in one of the P7 service packs (much to the annoyance of a few).

Poser: Nope.

D|S: Yep. (it sort of demands it... you select the parent folder of your "Runtime" directory as your D|S Poser content directory. e.g. my A3 runtime directory goes "zzA3Runtime > Runtime > (all the stuff in a typical Runtime directory, etc)"

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 22 September 2009 at 4:23 AM

I downloaded a program called Correct Reference which corrects materials references in Poser files, and it needs the address of the user's current RuntimeTextures folder, and it finds it by searching the computer for all folders called Textures and asking him which is the right one.

P8. One 60Gb Runtime. Quite happy.

Five computers, with the 32bit machines running both P7 and P8, and the 64bit machines running Poser Pro and P8.  All of them use the P8 shared docs/downloads runtime as the main library, about 50Gb.

Regarding external runtimes, I'm in the process of reinstalling all my content into their own separate runtimes and was wondering: if I load all the separate runtimes into Poser 7 using "add new runtime" will that choke the performance of Poser, or should I only load the runtimes I need?

hborre ( ) posted Wed, 28 October 2009 at 6:09 AM

Performance is unaffected if you load all your runtimes from what I have experienced.

Morana ( ) posted Wed, 28 October 2009 at 1:34 PM

I just recently installed a new main hard drive with Windows 7, so I currently only have Poser 8 installed.  I've got 12 external runtimes on a secondary hard drive pretty much dedicated to just that.

Poser 5-7 installed currently though I only really use Poser 7.

I have about 20 or 30 different runtimes I haven't counted but I think Acadia beats me.

Last I counted, I have 55.  I'm really thinking about breaking it up some more.

cdeltaforce1 ( ) posted Mon, 02 November 2009 at 2:03 PM

I have Poser 7 and Poser Pro installed on my computer, both on 'C' drive and on a external HD as well, I have created on my external HD individual runtimes for each file, I was thinking of doing a clean install and copying the runtime folder from the clean install to another HD and copying the runtime to a folder for each of the major figures such as: Michael 3 RT, Victoria 3 RT, Props Furniture RT, and continue doing this till everything has it's own runtime folder. Does this sound logical? Has anyone got any advice because at the moment I have been re-installing everything on to my 'C' drive as I just update my computer.

TIA

Poser 7 and 8, thirteen runtimes, a custom texture folder (modifications to commercial texture sets for personal use only and my own creations), separate runtimes to copy over to the Poser folders (for Mil 4 figures and Python scripts that work in Poser 8 only).  My runtimes are on an external hard drive on it's own partition so Norton Ghost can back it up easier.  Those backups are copied to DVD (dual layer) discs as well as an uncompressed version.  I can't imagine having to reinstall everything again.  It would be impossible since my folders have undergone major reorganization for about 10 years.

My Props runtime was so large I split it up into four runtimes for easier backup to disc: buildings and larger sets are in a Set runtime; nature items such as trees or plants; props just items for a scene that don't fall into a set category; vehicles; and weapons.

Mil figures 2-4 are in their own runtimes, but the Mil3 and Mil4 runtimes used to be Men3/Women3 and the same for the Mil4 figures only it got to be a real pain switching back and forth in Poser7 so I merged them.  I stuck Apollo Max in with the Mil3 figures even though he isn't one.

Creatures and Characters are combined with characters being non-DAZ figures or figures not based on any of the Mil figures.  Animals are in their own runtime.

I'm thinking of breaking up my Sets runtime into other runtimes specifically buildings since I use them the most.  I made all of the subfolders consistent among the other library folders in each runtime so it is easier to find things.  Such as in the Sets runtime, if there are mat files that go with a character then the folder will have the same name in Materials or Pose as it does in Character.

The most tedious way I've found to move items is to open the character/prop files in a text editor and find all the OBJ's or JPG's that are associated with it and move them.  If I had to reinstall everything again it would take several months or a year.
