Subject: RTEJava, cross platform, alternatives?

Tiny ( ) posted Thu, 29 October 2009 at 1:12 PM · edited Sat, 13 July 2024 at 3:02 AM

I am surpriced there are so few en/decoders for our files and especially cross platform.
Now it seems the java version (RTEJava) is gone so what options do we have besides selling at DAZ (who make their own installers) and RTEncoder python.
Anyone tried the RTEncoder python version? Is it cross platform, is it any good, and so on?

I'm totally depending on these encoders for my furred creatures.

Any ideas?  😕

RTEncoderPy 1.0 is a standalone program (a script thats been turn into an executable) and is available for Windows and Macs (there's a new note on the download page that the OS X Intel download doesn't work with Snow Leopard).
So long as you only make files in V1.0 format, then AFAIK, people should be able to decode with anything that's currently available.

I just wish I could find the format description/documentation I had.

 Thanks Noel.

Do I understand it correctly when assuming I need only one OS version when encoding (for example Windows) or do I need one for each OS?  It is not stated clearly on the site.

That's mostly correct.

The problem is that sometimes the file used as a key will have different line endings on Windows and Macs, which will mess up cross platform decoding (this can only be cured by new code).
Otherwise the only solutions to this is to use a binary file (instead of a text file) as the key, or provide a seperate utility to preprocess the key file to standardise line endings before encoding or decoding.

Yes, you are right of course, didn't think of that.
So the simplest way is to encode separately for Win and Mac.

The good about the python version is that the user don't need to install any additional software.

Hey!

RTEJava is still available publicly - I copied the files (but not the web pages) to another host a few months ago, before geocities shut down its services. Just search in freestuff and you'll find it!

However, I stopped supporting RTEJava several years ago and have no plans to update it. I built the first version of RTEJava way back in December 2003 because, at that time, there was no Mac version of the better-known original RTE utility.

noel, in re: RTEncoderPy, I didn't see any description of formats in its folder.
there are some auxiliary scripts referring to byte order, cyclic redundancy checks et al.

There once was a text file available decribing the format, but it's one of those things that's not been available for some time (casualty of website moves I guess) but it'll be on one of my disks somewhere, I just have to find it.
