Subject: Poser 7 SUX !!! Constant Freezing

jerikson40 ( ) posted Tue, 03 November 2009 at 12:26 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 11:11 AM

Okay, I've tried everything and I'm about to give up. Trying to use Poser 7 (I've used Poser very sporadically since P4...) on a Vista 64 bit system with 8GB memory, latest system drivers, latest P7 SP3. It freezes when I delete the default Simon in the default scene. Every single time. Also freezes at other times, such as when deleting .obj's.

And I've done everything. Reinstalled P7 onto the D: drive because Poser is so freakin' stupid. Using Sreed instead of OGL. Running P7 as Administrator. Brought down undo levels to 10. Clear cache at the start of the session.

I only use Poser because it does cloth simulations with Poser figures, but unless someone has some ideas on how to resolve this nonsense, it's Blender time.

Anyone? Thanks.

My experience is, that often freezing can be a Nvidia-thing.The latest VGA-driver might not allways be the best.Try former drivers also.Hope this will help

Quote - Delete and rebuild the prefs files.

You mean the xml files inside Poser7/Runtime/prefs/English ? I deleted (actually moved...) those out of that folder, so I'll see if that helps. Not sure how to rebuild them...

Thanks.

Poser rebuilds them itself next time you open it, you than just need to reset them to how you like them.

Did you reinstall SR-3?  It cures a multitude of sins...

Yeah, I reinstalled everything from scratch.

And even after deleting the .xml files under Prefs, the problems still exist.

I don't know how you guys stand this software. Having to jump thru so many hoops just to get it to run. Every other 3D app runs fine for me right out of the box. But Poser has always been a huge PITA. And now they have P8, which sounds like it has similar reliability problems.

Did you update anything before this started?
I run a similar system, Vista Ultimate 64 with 8 Gig RAM and an Nvidia 9800GT card and Poser 7 and 8 run fine.
I don't render with them though, I use Vue 8 Infinite for that.
Any changes to your system may have had an adverse effect on something, do you have a restore point you can try??

No, this has been going on for a long time, and I keep coming back to it to see if I can find a fix. It's getting to be where it's just not worth the hassle of trying this and that.

Ok one more, are you running it as an adninistrator and have you switched off the UAC?

Yes and yes.

markschum ( ) posted Tue, 03 November 2009 at 3:05 PM

The prefs files in Poser 7 are NOT in the poser folder, but in documents and settings /owner/pplication data /poser 7     where owner is you windows user id.

jerikson40 ( ) posted Tue, 03 November 2009 at 3:13 PM

thanks. got rid of those too, but it still freezes when I try to delete simon.

Well I'm out of ideas, sorry.
Except amybe a clean re-install, that's move your runtime somewhere safe, Uninstall Poser and manually delete the stuff that's left behind, then re-install and include SR3 and then put your saved runtime in place of the one Poser puts in!
That's my last idea!! [LOL].

Cool. thanks very much for the help, I sure appreciate it.

Must be just one of those things...

Poser has an odd habit of not running the same even on two different computers with the same OS, RAM amount, graphics card, and CPU.

Works just fine for me, with only the occasional, non-reproducible errors. Although that might be because I'm running XP.

Have Vista sp1 installed?
What is your render setting inside preview tab?
Is your display engine Opengl or sreeD? Try to change something there if it helps.

Maybe you should UNCHECK "Use external binary morph targets" found under Edit / General preferences / Misc tab .That gave me lots of headaches too .

Okay, I'm not sure what I did, but I seem to have a fairly reliable scene where I can perform my cloth dynamics. Maybe it was when I tried hopping on one leg and spinning around while chanting the lyrics to "Inna Gadda Da Vida". (yeah, like anyone has a clue what that song was...)

Anyway, my biggest remaining problem is that Poser 7 seems to have a problem importing .obj files. Even if those files open fine in other apps. I'd say maybe 50% of the time, Poser will freeze when it gets to about 100% of the file import. Only way to recover is kill Poser from the Task Manager.

I've done everything suggested above in this thread, so I'm at a loss. BTW, I also tried converting to a 3DS file and importing, with similar results. Although just before it freezes, the object appears in the scene, which doesn't happen with the .obj version.

Anyone? Thanks

I noticed the mention of system drivers; does this include video drivers directly from the manufacturer?

I do remember havings problems like constant crashing when I first installed P7. Turns out it was fixed by messing with the preview tab in the render settings (I do apologize in advance if I'm very vague. I'm at Uni and my laptop can't handle Poser). The link above is what I found to work for me.

jerikson40 ( ) posted Sat, 07 November 2009 at 1:19 PM

Thanks for the info. Looks like those settings put me back in crash-land, were it crashes when deleting an .obj.

Did I mention I hate Poser?

Nevare ( ) posted Sat, 07 November 2009 at 1:38 PM

Try the hardware accumulation buffer instead? I know messing around with the preview tab sorted out my problems. Also, a search of the forums from, say, 400+ days ago will probably bring up for info about it.

Not at all. If you're like me, your great grandfather told you about them...

jerikson40 ( ) posted Sun, 08 November 2009 at 10:58 AM

Well, FWIW (for what it's worth...), I cleaned out all Poser 7 for the third time, and loaded only 7.02 (?) right off the disc, and things are lookin' up. I'm loading .obj files left and right and it's working fine. I'm afraid to install SR3, and since it's working now I don't think I will unless I start getting other problems.

Anyway, thanks to all for the help. I've no clue what the problem was, but those gremlins seem to have moved on...
