Subject: SoundStager now free

Just a heads-up:  since the sad closing of 3dCommune, I'm moving my SoundStager script kit into ShareCG.   It's fairly old and might not work in P8, but it works in all other versions.

Addendum:  It does work in P8.

I've also put 1950 Suburb on ShareCG.

Oops, SoundStager wouldn't work in P8 if you don't also have a P7 install,
because it imports a couple of Python modules that are missing in the
newer version.

Ah, yes; one of the first products that I tested for 3DCommune.

Thanks for the memories!

Which modules are the problem ?
It could be that they're just broken on XP like the socket module.

Winsound.py is the module that seemed to be missing.  Looking closer, it's
been changed from a PYC in the Libs folder to a PYD in the DLLs folder,
so it's actually present after all.

When I tried running SoundStager in p8 last night, I was using an
installation within the 7 folders, running "remotely" from p8, which
is possible now.  So I assumed that the allegedly missing module
was being picked up from the P7 Libs folder, and further assumed
that it wouldn't run on a computer without any P7 material.

This morning I transferred the whole thing into P8's runtime and
deleted it from P7.

Conclusion after confusion:  Runs perfectly in P8 without any assistance
from other installs.

The P7 PYDs are linked against MSVCR80 and the P8 ones against MSVCR90 and are significantly different in size, so it's perhaps not surprising that the P7 version wouldn't work in P8.

@Whazizname:  Thanks for testing the Suburb set.
That was a long time ago in Poser years!

The technology and my skills have improved since then, so I decided to
free-ify that set.  My newer and better products will most likely end up at DDU.

Thanks for the freeification, if that's even a word. If it isn't, thanks anyway. :-)

After I wrote that, I realized we truly lack a word for the action of turning
a product loose with zero price.

It's fairly common in digital circles with "orphanware" and such, but
there isn't a word!

Freeing would seem to be the appropriate word -> http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/freeing

The question is, is it free as in beer, or free as in speech? I think it's the former, whereas "freeing" has more of the meaning of the latter. There's probably a form of *gratis* which would fit the bill, but I don't know any Latin. Any classical scholars in the forum?

ockham ( ) posted Tue, 10 November 2009 at 9:27 PM

It's too bad gratification already has another meaning ... it would probably be
the most logical choice.

GRATIFICATION:  1. To be satisified. 2. To be fulfilled. 3. A tall blonde, a margarita, and a general sense of total disregard for social norms. Lmao
