Subject: P8 Library Nightmare

ecccoman ( ) posted Tue, 12 January 2010 at 6:08 AM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 12:39 PM

There are a lot of threads on Library problems but my issues have become so acute I am ready to tear my hair out.

P8 ran flawlessly for 2 months.  The problem started with very slow loading of the P8 library.  Took forever to load the counts and pictures.  Then, last week no library at all.  I have been working with SM tech support and we must have traded at least 30 emails over the past week.  I have tried virtually everything & still no library.  Tech support has been very responsive, but no solution.

I have a good rig - pc [corei7 + 64 bit + loads of memory].  It is almost never put online - and then only for occasional windows updates.  No firewall or antivirus other Vista.  My libraries are not big with less than 12 RTs & most of them are not bloated.  Vista, Flash & IE are up to date.

Been booting in Diagnostic mode & turning off everything that comes with start up.  Been dumping all kinds of files & forwarding them to SM.  Shut down Vista firewall.  Re-loaded P8 with and without SR2.  Nothing.  Been learning quite a few things about Vista, but no results.

Not sure where to turn next.  Could install Windows 7, but what a waste of $ if the problem persists.  Looking forward to PoserPRo 2010, but I suppose the library structure will be the same.  I guess I will try 3rd party library, but you would expect something this fundamental to work.

Uggh.

Have you tried the obvious...running in admin mode and making sure that all your permissions are set correctly, Vista is a pain if even some of your permissions aren't set right for your folders. If your folder permissions aren't right, it won't even let you see them never mind add stuff to them.
I'm sure you've tried these...but just in case!

Injustice will be avenged.

The library problems seem to be there across all platforms. I am experiencing it in both Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010 on my XP 64 setup.

Have you tried deleting your Poser.ini file to see if that works as a work-around?

NoelCan ( ) posted Tue, 12 January 2010 at 4:14 PM

IMO...  Poser is no longer a self contained program,  what I mean is Poser calls upon other software
i,e. Flash and whatever browser that the user uses to perform functions originally performed inside Poser..

I am pretty sure that some of the problems with Libraries are there because of this..

I would suspect a recent update may be causing the problem.  You have had no issues for 2 months, then suddenly things go south.  Someone reported a flash player update which caused havoc with their P8.  It was corrected reinstalling the previous version.

aeilkema ( ) posted Tue, 12 January 2010 at 5:52 PM

Same here, library is suddenly gone. It may indeed have been because of a flash update. I'm still wondering what SM was thinking when they decided to go with a flash based library?

I've had enough of this new library and I do hope that someone releases an affordable library system that doesn't depend on it at all. I've been using DimensionXL, but it still needs the P8 library to add or remove runtimes. Anyone know of a library that operates completely independant from the P8 one?

And nothing in the post was an insult in any case.

I've been having a similar nightmare and I'm about to throw P8 and PoserPro 2010 in the bin. The new libraries are a NIGHTMARE and they never, EVER worked right on my rig, from day one of release. My problem is that the program freezes on updating (adding runtimes, saving poses, characters, presets, etc) so a program that I bought to use as a working tool is useless for developing content, which happens to be what I do for a living.

No amount of upgrades, tweaking, SRs or changes has caused the library to behave when adding. Which is a pity since I rather like the new interface, and I would rather use it preferentially.

I've now resorted to killing some suspect processes in Windows, and will be doing fresh installs and trying again while I work with the SM people to try and sort it out. But I'm not holding my breath.

ive found the P9 library useless since day one of its release and prefer the P7 library for all its faults,I now use an external library and because of this if also found that its faster at doing everything that an Poser library has ever done, perhaps the next poser can learn from these third party library managers and make them faster and work....

oh does anyone have the issue in Poser8 when you have too many things in one folder and when you scroll up and down in the library it get confused and messys up the entire library? cant believe that hasnt been fixed yet

Getting old and still making "art" without soiling myself, now that's success.

Noel, take it easy.  BB is correct.  I was not referring to anyone in particular.  Something that I read in passing and not noting who that individual was.  Strange things do happen.  I had an automatic update to IE8 install on one of my computers and the machine refused to boot up into Windows.  At that point, I would have assumed that the HD died.  Nope, was able to boot into safe mode, remove the offending update, and was able to reboot normally afterwards.

estherau ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 8:08 AM

my library works, but sometimes trying to find something in a folder and grab hold of it takes ages.  Mousing is kind of odd and flakey.  The whole library sometimes moves and at other times scrolls along way too quick, and I think I should be able to use it but I can't.  I can't drag it down to make it longer either.  The mouse curser changes over the horizontal bar to that up down arrow with the little horizontal bar in the centre, but it doesn't grab the library bar to pull it.  This is in poser pro 2101 though so it may be a bug.
the show library that I need to use, doesn't have a scrolling bar on the right to pull down quickly so I have to scroll all the way down my massive long list of runtimes.
Eventually I always go back to my shaderworks library manager as it is much quicker finding things even though I'd dearly love to be able to use both systems.

Ok, in the interest of fairness, the main problem with my library (being unable to save) has been sorted out. it took me up until 5am troubleshooting, and 4 more hours this morning, but for the most part it appears to be fine.

The culprit was windows indexing. I've got no idea why the library was relying on it to list files, but it was getting hung up somehow. I started suspecting it was corrupted as Outlook keep having issues with speed search (also done through indexing). After trying without luck to turn indexing off for the HDD, I had to kill the indexing process, turn off windows search from the start up, reboot the machine, verify that things were not loading automatically, and test... and P8's library worked. So in the end I had to rebuild Windows' index, which took quite a while, but things seem to be running fine now.

PP2010 is now refusing to save to library unless I am running the program as an admin, but comparing with crashes, I'd think that's a minor issue.

Btw, the library is still a bit slow to load, and not 100% reliable when it comes to show ALL that is in the folders, but that's a different issue.

Vista or Win7? if so, thats an easy one.. UAC. (UAC is designed to protect the Program Files area from damage. part of which is preventing writing to the PF areas ad-hoc, which is basically what Poser does. fixes are to disable UAC, Modify UAC, Run as Admin, Install Content to a non PF Runtime or just install Poser outside the Program Files folder)

Arien ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 9:35 AM

Vista. I'm running as an Admin now and that has sorted out the issue, although without that "fix  it does that to all libraries, including those outside the ProgramFiles folder. But meh, compared to what it was doing before, having to run it as an admin is nothing.

Totally amazing. I turned off indexing in my XP 64 install and it seems all of my library issues have gone away! Not only that, the whole PC seems to run faster! Thanks Arien!!! Warm fuzzies to you and cold pricklies to Microsoft!

jefsview ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 11:02 AM

I guess that I'm the only one that hasn't had a problem with the new library. Since the thumbnail fix in SR2, nothing has been wrong with it. Running on XP Pro.

Indexing is evil. If you hack your libraryprefs.xml you can make Poser ignore the indexing service.

Bagginsbill, how would we do that? By changing the searchindexed attribute on each line of the library to 0?

And just a suggestion, if it does cause so much trouble, wouldn't it be a good idea to have poser save the library prefs without it?

I think yes, set it to 0 on each library.

I don't know why it defaults to on. I didn't write that part. In theory, the indexer should increase performance, not decrease it, so they turned it on by default. None of us ever imagined that the indexer would cause problems with large runtimes. Its purpose in life is to do the opposite. And, for dozens of users, it did. I know several people with terabytes (1000 gigabytes) of Poser content that starts up instantly now in P8, when it used to take P7 30 minutes to start.

I appreciate all the suggestions.  Question:

I have IE 8 on that machine.  Any chance that IE 7 would be better??

Any possibility that an upgrade to Windows 7 would help??

As if I didn't have enough problems.................
After a 1.5 weeks, still no library.  Going back & forth with SM trying various fixes.  In the process of updating Vista, one of the recommended downloads was Realtek something or other.  I did, now I can't get that pc online - some kind of Realtek driver problem..... I am dying here!!!

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 3:07 PM

hang on. if Indexing is causing an issue, thats a data point. since it's optional on XP, Buggy on Vista and on Win7 only looks at certain folders.....

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 4:13 PM

the poser 8 library works as intended for me (OS X), but those experiencing difficulties with windows version may wish to try philc's alternate library script.  he provided a link to it in python forum.

Zaycrow ( ) posted Wed, 13 January 2010 at 6:04 PM

The best library around is IMO AL "Advanced Library for Poser". And it's free! It also works with P8 and PP2010. It is very fast, has preview images, search function, can load stuff (via PRPC) directly into poser and much more.
P8 and PP2010 doesn't work for me with the current library, so this can be an alternative for those who have problems or just want a library that are not a part of Poser. I do have ShaderWorks Library Manager but find AL to be better for my needs.

Some links.

can you select a whole folder of items all at once and conform them all at once and magnetize all in one hit with advance library for poser?
You can with the shaderworks library manager.

No, but you can click on all items you want to load or search for the next things to load while Poser's still busy loading stuff...
Conform and magnetize to the previously selected figure: yes.
And if you don't use PRPC but the native Poser 8 loading mechanism, undo works.
It's Windows only though.

Somebody mentioned 3rd party library manager(s) unable to add runtimes. Can't remember which was being talked about.

Dizzi - I think you worked out how to talk to Poser's Library Services Manager (LSM). So this info might be useful:

To trigger Poser 8 or Pro 2010 to add a new Runtime, send it the message op=addLibraryClick.

Poser will prompt the user for a new Runtime, and if one is selected, a top-level scan of the categories in that library will be returned in the XML response. If the user cancels, an empty XML document will be returned (won't have any children).

To remove a runtime, send op=removeLibrary&id=

I WANT MY LIBRARY BACK!!!!!

i installed an older version of the flashplayer and than via poser the newest version. strange things happend (the library was shown in my browser...) but now the library is back again. lets see how long i can work with it this time!

Goodafternoon, I am stunned. (but that is just me)
My 2 main PC's crached in 2 days time. No recovery possible, all is lost, so here we are.

Not wanting to buy something on the fly to replace them, I bought me a very Small netbook.

A Dell 1012, just a 10" screen, typing on it now.
Windows 7starter pack, 1GB Ram, with 650 used by the system.
Intel Atom CPU N450@ 1.66GHZ, Intel Graphics media Accelerator315O

I installed P8, ran fine, installed SR2.1, and runs very fine.

OK, it is small but the screen is great at 1024x600 and the preview area is about 644x448.
Small, but workable.
Touch on wood, runs like a Swiss clock, library and everything.
I might even report it to SM, never expected it to run so well. (had the P7 and the P5CD ready)

But, I am very pleased with the result. :-)

A quick update;

even on this very low spec netbook Poser8 SR 2.1 runs very fine.
last evening I connected a  22" screen, and the Little netbook, Devil Dell 1012 runs it at 1920x1050, 32bit, 60Hz.

very, very impressed.

With the netbook, and with Poser8, As it runs so well on this very small graphics card.
No errors so far, and even the library functions as it should.
Loading times are not that much slower, it does a fine Job.
Great little back up system to stay in shape, waiting for my new rig.
